Autoimmunity in selective IgA deficiency: relationship to anti-bovine protein antibodies, circulating immune complexes and clinical disease.

To test the possibility that autoimmunity could be related to increased levels of anti-bovine antibodies and/or circulating immune complexes in selective IgA deficiency, we studied the sera of 30 consecutive patients for the quantitative level of antibody to bovine milk, the presence of antigen--antibody complexes and 10 selected autoantibodies. Higher titres of anti-milk antibody and circulating immune complexes were to be correlated with positive serological tests of autoimmunity in these patients, and rheumatoid arthritis (three cases) and neurological disease (four cases) were found in ind

Immune complexes in the sputum of patients with cystic fibrosis suffering from chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection.

12 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients chronically infected with mucoid P. aeruginosa and presenting multiple precipitins in serum against this bacterium and 12 patients without P. aeruginosa infection were examined for occurrence of soluble immune complexes in their sputum sol phase by a complement consumption assay and a solid phase rheumatoid factor binding assay. The correlation between the results obtained in the two assays was significant (r = 0.625, p less than 0.01). The patients chronically infected with P. aeruginosa showed a significantly (p less than 0.01) higher frequency of immune comp

Amebic peritonitis following rupture of an amebic liver abscess. Successful treatment of two patients.

We present two successfully treated cases of amebic peritonitis. Acute peritonitis secondary to intra-abdominal rupture of an amebic liver abscess is an infrequent but serious complication of invasive amebiasis. Its diagnosis should be considered in anyone with a suspected liver abscess, jaundice, or diarrhea in whom peritonitis develops. This diagnosis should be further suggested in the United States if the patient is a male and is of Mexican origin in areas where this racial group constitutes the majority of cases of amebic disease. Use of radioisotope liver scans and the demonstration of se

[Clinical and immunological effect of washing powder enzymes on workers and users (author's transl)].

For 141 workers in the washing powder industry in Maribor (Group A) and 68 workers of vegetables' shops to determine the risk of sensitization for house-wives handling enzymes detergents (Group B) as a control group the results of diagnostic investigations as well as analyses of protective measures to proteolytic enzymes are contrasted. Within the Group A eight subgroups according to exposition to proteolytic enzymes powder are evaluated. Especially elucited are the results of skin testing (Scratch-tets with Maxatase, Alcalase and culture extract from B. subtilis) and with proteolytic enzymes

Pulmonary responses to particulate materials capable of activating the alternative pathway of complement.

The cellular sequence of events evoked by the intratracheal injection of both respirable mouldy hay dust and zymosan in unsensitized rats and rabbits was markedly similar and contained many features seen in lung biopsies from farmer's lung cases. It is considered that a combination of ability to activate the alternative pathway of complement and the particulate nature of mouldy hay dust and zymosan produced the pulmonary response seen and as such, considerable insight has been gained into mechanisms by which unsensitized individuals respond to dust inhalation. It is suggested that alternative

Fowl cholera: immunologic and werologic response in turdeys to live Pasteruella multocida vaccine administered in the drinking water.

Live fowl cholera vaccine administered in drinking water induced immunity in young turkeys against a challenge of a different immunogenic type of Pasteurella multocida; this is referred to as cross-immunity. Serum from the vaccinated birds induced passive cross-immunity in chicks and turkeys; this demonstrated that the cross-immunity induced with the drinking water vaccine was associated with the humoral system. Results of serologic tests with agar grown P. multocida indicate that agglutinins and precipitins are not associated with the induced cross-immunity. A live culture of P. multodica pre

Autoantibodies in children with coeliac disease.

Anti-reticulin antibody was found in the serum of thirty-two of forty-eight (67%) children with coeliac disease, a statistically significant difference from an incidence of seven of forty-eight matched controls. The antibody was solely of IgG class in 66% of patients and 76% of controls and in the remainder comprised a mixture of IgG and IgA. The antibody could not be absorbed with gluten. One coeliac patient had serum antinuclear factor, and one had smooth muscle antibody. No statistically significant differences in mean IgG, IgA and IgM levels were demonstrable between coeliac patients and c

Farmer's Lung: A Diagnostic Challenge For the Family Physician.

Farmer's Lung is a respiratory disease caused by inhalation of microspores that grow in warm, damp vegetable material. Although the disease has been widely recognized in many countries, there are only 11 case reports published in Canada. The incidence is likely significant in many rural areas of this country. Inhalation of the microspores produces an allergic reaction in the alveoli of the lung (Arthus Type III). The symptoms are usually dry cough, dyspnea, but little wheezing. Signs are fever, and crackling rales. Antibody precipitins to specific microspores are usually present. Chest X-rays

Immunochemical studies of antitoxin produced in normal and allergic individuals hyperimmunized with diphtheria toxoid. I. Relationship of skin sensitivity to purified diphtheria toxoid to the presence of circulating, non-precipitating antitoxin.

Among a group of 131 young adults tested, there was a high degree of correlation between the occurrence of immediate skin reactions of the wheal and erythema type produced by purified diphtheria toxoid and personal or familial history of allergy of the hay-fever type. Of 39 Schick-negative subjects who received a "booster" dose of purified diphtheria toxoid, 19 showed no immediate skin reactions before immunization. The development of skin sensitivity in these subjects was associated with the production of non-precipitating circulating antitoxin. Three subjects produced 20 units or more antito

[Diagnosis of pulmonary aspergillosis in cases with cavity as sequela of tuberculosis].

Non-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is frequently seen in cases with cavity as sequela of tuberculosis. Diagnosis of non-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is not easy except for cases whose chest X-ray findings show a typical fungus ball. How to diagnose pulmonary aspergillosis was studied in 21 patients who showed changes in the radiological findings of cavity as sequela of tuberculosis. We made sputum culture of Aspergillus, measurement of precipitin antibody titer to Aspergillus fumigatus and measurement of PASTOREX ASPERGILLUS in serum and sputum on the 21 patients (group A). PASTOREX ASPE

[Cercaria dermatitis (swimmer's itch). Case report of cercaria dermatitis caused by Trichobilharzia (Digena, Schistosomatidae)].

A 63-year-old woman developed a pruritic exanthema on the extremities after one hour of work in her garden pond in Planegg, Southern Bavaria. As the appropriate vectors (ducks and snails) were present, we made the tentative diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch). By different serological methods (cercarial fluorescent antibody test, cercarial Hüllen reaction, circumoval precipitin test) antibodies against cercariae could be demonstrated in the serum of the patient 14 days later. Cercarial dermatitis appears worldwide, but in Central Europe the disease is often not recognized.

Characteristics of Actinomyces pyogenes involved in lameness of male turkeys in north-central United States.

A new condition of clinical lameness in 20 male turkey flocks of North-Central United States, associated with isolation of gram-positive rod bacteria from lesions of osteomyelitis, is characterized. The characterization confirmed the randomly selected isolates as Actinomyces pyogenes based on macroscopic and microscopic observations and 17 biochemical tests. The disease was reproduced within 3 weeks in all male turkeys, following an intravenous challenge at 15 weeks of age. The agar gel precipitin test and immunoblotting confirmed the antigenic similarity of the isolates recovered from the ost

Food-borne streptococcal pharyngitis in a hospital pediatrics clinic.

After a potluck luncheon, more than half the staff of a hospital pediatrics clinics became ill. Group A Streptococcus (M precipitin, nontypable; T agglutination type, 8/25; and serum opacity reaction, positive) was isolated from 12 of the 20 ill persons. Food-consumption analysis implicated a rice dressing as the vehicle of transmission. The dressing was prepared by a clinic employee in whom pharyngitis had developed three weeks before the luncheon. This is an unusual outbreak in that the implicated food product was not institutionally or commercially prepared and was not preponderantly compos

Capsular and somatic types of Pasteurella multocida from rabbits.

Capsular and somatic serotyping was performed on 79 cultures of Pasteurella multocida from rabbits. Of these isolates, 74 were capsular type A as determined by the staphylococcal hyaluronidase decapsulation test and five were type D by the acriflavine flocculation test. Somatic type 12 was the dominant serotype, and the remainder (type 1, 3, 4 and 11) were less frequent as determined by the gel diffusion precipitin test. This report is in general agreement with other recent reports with rabbit isolates and collectively they provide important serotype and epizootiological information that will

Argininosuccinate lyase: a new autoantigen in liver disease.

Anti-liver cytosol 1 autoantibody (LC1) characterizes a severe form of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), staining the cytoplasm of periportal hepatocytes and targeting an unidentified 60-kD liver cytosolic antigen. To identify its target, we used high-titre anti-LCI+ sera from two patients with AIH to screen 18 cytoplasm enzymes with periportal location by double immunodiffusion (DDI). Both sera gave a broad precipitin line against human liver cytosol, suggesting that they may recognize two distinct antigens, a possibility confirmed by the appearance of two precipitin lines when DDI conditions were

Plasma exchange in dermatomyositis/polymyositis: beneficial effects in three cases.

We describe ameliorative effects of plasmapheresis in three patients with dermatomyositis-polymyositis resistant to other therapy, particularly prednisolone. Serologically, the cases were marked, respectively, by a weakly-reactive speckled-type ANA; a strongly reactive speckled-type ANA and an unidentifiable precipitin line by CIEP; and an antibody to cytoplasm and to Jo1. The remission induced by plasmapheresis was temporary in one case and lasting, with low doses of prednisolone, in two. The nuclear autoantibody in case two became undemonstrable after plasmapheresis but recurred during a sub

McArdle's disease: a study on the molecular basis of two different etiologies of myophosphorylase deficiency.

Three patients with myophosphorylase deficiency were investigated. Two had no detectable activity, while one had 1% residual activity. The patient with 1% residual activity had 40% of the normal amount of myophosphorylase protein. No myophosphorylase protein could be detected in the other two cases. A precipitin band in the Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion test was not present in any case. This study showed that modifying the normal enzyme (without changing the molecular weight) changed the immunoprecipitin activity of the phosphorylase protein. Therefore, immunoprecipitation is not a valid

A comparison of tests for thyroglobulin antibody.

A comparison is made of tests for thyroglobulin antibody, using gel diffusion, electroprecipitin, bentonite flocculation, tanned red cell agglutination, and latex slide agglutination techniques on sera from cases of Hashimoto's disease and other thyroid disorders. Any increase in gamma globulin was also noted from the serum electrophoretic pattern. The gel diffusion and electroprecipitin tests are shown to be comparable in their sensitivity, as are the bentonite flocculation and tanned red cell agglutination tests. The flocculation and agglutination tests were oversensitive. The latex slide te

Diagnostic Approach to Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: A Report of Two Cases.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a bronchopulmonary granulomatosis of immunological mechanism, caused by an aberrant response to an inhaled exposure, which results in mostly T cell-mediated inflammation, granuloma formation, and fibrosis in some cases. The most common forms are bird breeder's disease and farmer's lung disease. The diagnosis of HP is based on the presence of compatible symptoms, the notion of exposure to antigens known to be pathogenic, and the existence of interstitial and bronchiolar images on the thoracic scan, lymphocytosis in the alveolar lavage, and precipitins.
