Approaches to increase access to community-based infectious disease control for ethnically, racially, and religiously marginalised populations: a scoping review.

Marginalised populations often have reduced access to infectious disease prevention interventions, and as a result of this and other socioeconomic factors, these populations are at a higher risk of disease. Here, we reviewed the literature of community-based interventions delivered at the individual level across multiple diseases, and focused on how to increase access to infectious disease interventions for ethnically, racially, and religiously marginalised populations. Most of the included studies only focused on a single disease and used quantitative descriptive methods. We noted the lack of

Considerations of race and ethnicity within rehabilitation studies for post COVID-19 condition: A scoping review.

Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) or long COVID disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority communities. There are a growing number of rehabilitation studies for PCC, however, it has yet to be determined whether existing studies take race and ethnicity into account in their study designs and whether existing rehabilitative approaches are equally effective across diverse racial and ethnic groups. The objective of this study was to describe the extent to which rehabilitation studies of PCC consider race and ethnicity in defining eligibility criteria, planning recruitment strategies, design

Exploring the Engagement of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in HIV Treatment and Vaccine Clinical Trials: A Scoping Review of Literature and Implications for Future Research.

HIV disproportionately impacts US racial and ethnic minorities but they participate in treatment and vaccine clinical trials at a lower rate than whites. To summarize barriers and facilitators to this participation we conducted a scoping review of the literature guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies published from January 2007 and September 2019 were reviewed. Thirty-one articles were identified from an initial pool of 325 records using three coders. All records were then assessed for barriers and facilitators and summarize

Predictors of Biracial adolescent racial self-categorization when confronted with monoracist demographic forms.

The current study draws from literature on Multiracial ethnic-racial identity development processes and utilizes logistic regression models to identify what factors inform ethnic-racial self-categorization choices when confronted with a monoracial paradigm of race in a sample of Biracial high school students. Separate logistic regression models analyzed how family ethnic-racial socialization, phenotype, friend groups, and experiences with discrimination are associated with the racial category for Biracial White, Asian, Black, Native American, and Latinx youth, respectively, when asked to choos

Case-control study learning module: Oluweafemi et al. (2026), The association between paternal race and ethnicity and a spectrum of birth defects in a national case-control study.

Educational Engagement Modules (EEMs) are teaching materials for educators and students that facilitate a deeper understanding of key epidemiological methods and concepts. Each EEM poses a series of questions using a recently published paper in Annals to further understanding of a specific study design or epidemiological concept and to encourage critical thinking and careful evaluation. This EEM focuses on case-control studies featuring the following article: Oluwafemi OO, Mitchell LE, Patel JR, Nembhard WN, Shaw GM, Olshan AF, Chen H, Agopian AJ. The association between paternal race and ethn

The use of race and ethnicity in sickle cell disease research.

This study explores practices surrounding the operationalization of ethno-racial categories (ERCs) as confounders in biomedical research, with a focus on sickle cell disease (SCD) as a model. ERCs, often aggregate labels encompassing diverse individuals which raises questions about their relevance as confounders. Given SCD's racialization as a "Black" disease, understanding ERC utilization is crucial. This study analyzed 1,105 SCD studies published globally. Data were collected on whether ERC adjustment was employed, regional variations in ERC-adjustment rates, labels used for ERCs, rationales

Low Prevalence of Reporting of Participant Race and Ethnicity in Gastroenterology Research Publications.

INTRODUCTION: Empirical information on the evolution of reporting race and ethnicity information in gastroenterology research is lacking. To facilitate understanding of where improvements are needed to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in gastroenterology research, we aimed to evaluate reporting and representation by race and ethnicity in studies published in flagship US-based gastroenterology journals over 20 years. METHODS: We manually reviewed reporting and representation by race and ethnicity in all original research articles published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology a

Mechanisms underlying the association between adverse childhood experiences and racial disparities in later-life cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may be a risk factor for later-life cognitive disorders such as dementia; however, few studies have investigated underlying mechanisms, such as cardiovascular health and depressive symptoms, in a health disparities framework. METHOD: 418 community-dwelling adults (50% nonHispanic Black, 50% nonHispanic White) aged 55+ from the Michigan Cognitive Aging Project retrospectively reported on nine ACEs. Baseline global cognition was a z-score composite of five factor scores from a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Depressive symptoms were asse

When resilience is not enough: Imagining novel approaches to supporting Black youth navigating racism.

The narrative surrounding the impact racism has had on the well-being of Black youth has shifted across sociocultural and historical context. Early discourse around these topics were problem-saturated, focusing on deficits "within" Black youth. Over time, an important narrative shift occurred: greater attention was paid to the inherent assets of Black youth, their families, and communities, including how racial-ethnic protective factors such as racial socialization afforded them resilience. What resulted was decades of research seeking to understand the mechanisms that allow Black youth to bou

Assessing Ethnic Minority Representation in Fibromyalgia Clinical Trials: A Systematic Review of Recruitment Demographics.

The under-representation of non-White participants in Western countries in clinical research has received increased attention, due to recognized physiological differences between ethnic groups, which may affect the efficacy and optimal dosage of some treatments. This review assessed ethnic diversity in pharmaceutical trials for fibromyalgia, a poorly understood chronic pain disorder. We also investigated longitudinal change to non-White participant proportions in trials and non-White participants' likelihood to discontinue with fibromyalgia research between trial stages (retention). First, we

Variations in genetics, biology, and phenotype of cutaneous disorders in skin of color - Part I: Genetic, biologic, and structural differences in skin of color.

Skin of color (SOC) populations include those who identify as Black/African, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Indigenous Australian, Middle Eastern, biracial/multiracial, or non-White; this list is far from exhaustive and may vary between and within cultures. Recent genetic and immunological studies have suggested that cutaneous inflammatory disorders (atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and hidradenitis suppurativa) and malignancies (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma) may have variations in their immunophenotype among SOC. Addition

Risk for alcohol use problems in severe mental illness: Interactions with sex and racial/ethnic minority status.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is exceedingly common among individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. However, studies on alcohol use in psychiatric illness rely largely on population surveys with limited representation of severe mental illness (SMI); schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. METHODS: Using data from the Genomic Psychiatry Cohort (GPC) (Pato MT, 2013), associations of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia with alcohol use problems were examined in a diverse US based sample, considering the influence of self-described race (African Ancestry (AA), European Ancestry (EA

Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in Prompt Craniosynostosis Workup and Treatment.

The purpose of this study was to identify racial and socioeconomic disparities in craniosynostosis evaluation and treatment, from referral to surgery. Patients diagnosed with craniosynostosis between 2012 and 2020 at a single center were identified. Chart review was used to collect demographic variables, age at referral to craniofacial care, age at diagnosis, age at surgery, and surgical technique (open versus limited incision). Multivariable linear and logistic regression models with lasso regularization assessed the independent effect of each variable. A total of 298 patients were included.
