Laparoscopic resection of a retroperitoneal ancient schwannoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from neural sheath Schwann cells. Solitary benign schwannomas are generally located in the head and neck, often along the cranial nerves, and are a particularly rare neoplasm among tumors of the retroperitoneal space. A 67-year-old man undergoing a general health check was incidentally found to have a mass beside the left kidney. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a cystic adrenal mass located cephalad to the left kidney. Retroperitoneoscopic resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed. The pathological diagnosis was retroperitoneal benign schwan…

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma: A case report.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic tumors are extremely rare. These tumors can be classified as a primary retroperitoneal mucinous cyst … ss. Multidetector computed tomography scanning revealed a large, unilocular cystic mass in the left retroperitoneal space. Surgical intervention was performed and the tumor was completely removed. Histopathologic examination confirmed that the tumor was a primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma. Two years after surgery, the patient remains disease free.

Detection of adrenal and retroperitoneal masses in a general health examination system.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the detection rate of adrenal and retroperitoneal masses other than kidney diseases in a general health examination system. METHODS: From May 1991 through February 1996, 41,357 subjects participated in the general health examination system in our hospital. Approximately 80% of participants were 40 to 59 years old. For all participants, transabdominal ultrasound (US) was performed by five expert examiners using an Aloka SSD-650 with a 3.5-MHz convex-type transducer. When US revealed abnormal lesions on the adrenal gland and in the retroperitoneal space, we recommende…

Is primary retroperitoneal lymph node dissection the way forward for patients with testicular seminoma and limited retroperitoneal metastases?

Testicular cancer represents 1% of adult neoplasms and is the most common solid malignancy in young men. Of men presenting with seminoma, approximately 20% will have clinical stage (CS) II disease, characterized by enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes without further metastasis. A further group of men will present with CS I disease but later experience relapse in the retroperitoneal lymph nodes. The standard treatment for many decades in these patients is either radiotherapy (30-36Gy) or chemotherapy (BEPx3, EPx4). Despite high cure rates with these modalities, concerns persist regarding short

Preoperative Radiotherapy in Patients With Primary Retroperitoneal Sarcoma: EORTC-62092 Trial (STRASS) Versus Off-trial (STREXIT) Results.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of radiotherapy (RT) on abdominal recurrence-free survival (ARFS) in patients with primary retroperitoneal sarcoma treated in the EORTC-STBSG-62092 (STRASS) phase 3 randomized controlled trial (STRASS cohort) and off-trial (STREXIT cohort) and to pool STRASS and STREXIT data to test the hypothesis that RT improves ARFS in patients with liposarcoma. BACKGROUND: The STRASS trial did not show any difference in ARFS between patients treated with preoperative radiotherapy+surgery (RT+S) versus surgery alone (S). METHODS: All consec

[A Case of Retroperitoneal Atypical Spindle Cell Lipomatous Tumor].

A 74-year-old man visited our clinic for treatment of a retroperitoneal tumor that had enlarged gradually. We performed surgical resection of the tumor because we suspected retroperitoneal liposarcoma radiographically. The histopathological diagnosis was an atypical spindle cell lipomatous tumor. No signs of recurrence or metastasis have been observed for one year after the operation.

Gossypiboma mimicking a retroperitoneal tumor.

"Gossypiboma" denotes a mass of cotton that is retained in the body after surgery. An image is presented of a retroperitoneal mass in a lady who had a right nephrectomy 8 years earlier for a nonfunctioning kidney. Clinical examination and plain abdominal radiography were not contributory. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed a well-defined, heterogeneous, spherical, soft-tissue mass, 13 × 9 × 9 cm in size, in the retroperitoneum, with a dense enhanced wall, abutting the right psoas and posterior abdominal wall. Exploration revealed an abdominal sponge surrounded by foreign

[Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis--the Ormond's disease].

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, so called "Ormond's disease" belongs to rare inflammatory processes of unknown etiology. As a result of this disease fibrotic masses causing compression of the ureters, vessels and alimentary canal appear in the retroperitoneal space. In this study we describe the case of 59 years old man. Diagnosis was confirmed with computed tomography of abdominal cavity. Patient was treated with corticosteroids, endoxan. Good course of disease was observed.

Tumor-forming idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis: report of a case.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) is characterized by the progressive proliferation of connective tissue, but it rarely results in the formation of a mass. Herein, we report a rare case of tumor-forming IRF. A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital after a tumor in the right retroperitoneum was found by ultrasonography and computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a 5 x 8 x 5-cm irregularly shaped tumor, lying adjacent to the right kidney, with a high-intensity T1-weighted image and a high-intensity T2-weighted image. Hormonal levels were within normal limits. Surg

Amyloidosis: diffuse involvement of the retroperitoneum.

Systemic amyloidosis diffusely involving the retroperitoneum has not, to the authors' knowledge, been previously reported. The computed tomographic scans of a 68-year-old man showed evidence of diffuse, nonenhancing thickening of the entire retroperitoneum. This appearance mimicked retroperitoneal fibrosis, but the diagnosis of amyloidosis was confirmed at autopsy.

Adrenal gland and nonrenal retroperitoneum.

Ultrasound, as the initial cross-sectional imaging technique, confirmed the value of axial records. Although computerized tomography and possibly magnetic resonance offers better resolution, ultrasonography has the advantage of being less expensive, convenient, and highly portable. With these specific indications and reservations, ultrasonography of the adrenal and retroperitoneum has an accepted role in imaging.

The sonographic evaluation of the great vessels' interspace in the pediatric retroperitoneum.

The great vessels' interspace, in the pediatric retroperitoneum, deserves special attention during abdominal sonographic examination. By rotating the child into the right anterior oblique position, the full length of this interspace is demonstrated. Normally, it has a uniform appearance. When invaded by disease, the sonographic pathology can be identified and differentiated from the surrounding structures. The studies were gathered from experience with 1658 retroperitoneal sonographic examinations. Fourteen children were found with disease involving the great vessels' interspace: 4 patients wi

Pelvic lipomatosis.

Although usually in the domain of the urologist, pelvic lipomatosis sometimes first may present to the general surgeon. Often called perivesical lipomatosis, this process of unknown etiology has been defined as a nonmalignant overgrowth of normal fatty tissue limited primarily to the perirectal and perivesical spaces in the pelvis. Typically it occurs in middle-aged, nonobese, men presenting with dysuria and sometimes with suprapubic fullness. High position of the prostate may be noted on rectal examination. Urinary tract roentgenograms show a high, gourd-shaped bladder with the surrounding ra

Giant posterior pararenal schwannoma: A case report and review of literature.

Schwannomas, arising from Schwann cells of peripheral nerve sheaths, are primarily benign tumors. They are rarely found in the retroperitoneal space. To date, ~30 cases on giant retroperitoneal schwannomas have been reported. Those with a location of pararenal space are even rarer. Clinically, they are often misdiagnosed as malignancies. In the present study, a case of a 35-year-old woman with a giant schwannoma measuring 13 × 8.5 × 6.5 cm in the posterior pararenal space of left retroperitoneum was presented, which was thought to be a malignant tumor from the result of computed tomography sca…

Retroperitoneal cystic mature teratoma in an adult male: A clinical report of one case and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: A case of retroperitoneal cystic mature teratoma in an adult male. Retroperitoneal cystic mature teratoma is a type of teratoma. The disease has occult onset, does not have the typical characteristics of teratoma, and is difficult to distinguish from cystadenoma and other diseases. Cystic mature teratoma is benign, but it has a certain risk of malignant transformation. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the specificity of the case, collect and analyze the imaging features of the disease, and provide assistance for daily clinical diagnosis. PATIENT CONCERNS: Adult extra

Fine needle aspiration in retroperitoneal lesions.

The retroperitoneal space is a potential space extending from lumbar to the pelvic region, behind the peritoneum. It encloses many vital organs like adrenals, kidneys, ureters, pancreas, aorta and its branches, inferior vena cava and its tributaries and many lymph nodes along with loose connective tissue and fat. The literature regarding role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for diagnosis of retroperitoneal lesions as a whole, is exceedingly limited. The present study was conducted to elucidate the spectrum of retroperitoneal lesions and to determine the diagnostic accuracy of fine ne…

Trajectory of the main sensory and motor branches of the lumbar plexus outside the psoas muscle related to the lateral retroperitoneal transpsoas approach.

OBJECT: The minimally invasive lateral retroperitoneal transpsoas approach is increasingly used to treat various spinal disorders. Accessing the retroperitoneal space and traversing the abdominal wall poses a risk of injury to the major nervous structures and adds significant morbidity to the procedure. Most of the current literature focuses on the anatomy of the lumbar plexus within the substance of the psoas muscle. However, there is sparse knowledge regarding the trajectory of the lumbar plexus nerves that travel along the retroperitoneum and abdominal wall muscles in relation to the latera…

Maximizing Success: An Overview of Optimizing the Ovarian Tissue Transplantation Site.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation (OTCT) has emerged in recent years as a potential method for reversing abnormal endocrine and reproductive functions, particularly in patients receiving gonadotoxic cancer treatments having longer survival rates. From its first rodent experiments to human trials, OTCT has evolved tremendously, opening new windows for further utilization. Since then, significant progress has been achieved in terms of techniques used for surgical removal of the tissue, optimal fragment size, freezing and thawing procedures, and appropriate surgical sites for th
