Deciphering brain activation during wrist movements: comparative fMRI and fNIRS analysis of active, passive, and imagery states.

Understanding the complex activation patterns of brain regions during motor tasks is crucial. Integrated functional magnetic resonance imagi … hresholding in SPM12. For activation map extraction we focused on the primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex, somatosensory association cortex, premotor cortex, and supplementary motor cortex. Both fMRI and fNIRS detected activation in the primary motor cortex (M1). The primary somatosensory cortex was found to influence movement direction coding, with sma …

Structure-function abnormalities in cortical sensory projections in embouchure dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Embouchure dystonia (ED) is a task-specific focal dystonia in professional brass players leading to abnormal orofacial muscle po … ULTS: ED patients showed average axial diffusivity reduction within projections between the primary somatosensory cortex and putamen, with converse increases within projections between supplementary motor and superior parietal cortex in both hemispheres. Increase in the mode of anisotropy in patients was accompanying the latter left-hemispheric projection, as well as …

Changes in cerebellar output abnormally modulate cortical myoclonus sensorimotor hyperexcitability.

Cortical myoclonus is produced by abnormal neuronal discharges within the sensorimotor cortex, as demonstrated by electrophysiology. Our hypothesis is that the loss of cerebellar inhibitory control over the motor cortex, via cerebello-thalamo-cortical connections, could induce the increased sensorimotor cortical excitability that eventually causes cortical myoclonus. To explore this hypothesis, in the present study we applied anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the cerebellum of patients affected by cortical myoclonus and healthy controls and assessed its effect on sensorimotor

Functional organization of motor cortex of adult macaque monkeys is altered by sensory loss in infancy.

When somatosensory cortex (S1) is deprived of some of its inputs after section of ascending afferents in the dorsal columns of the spinal cord, it reorganizes to overrepresent the surviving inputs. As somatosensory cortex provides guiding sensory information to motor cortex, such sensory loss and representational reorganization could affect the development of the motor map in primary motor cortex (M1), especially if the sensory loss occurs early in development. To address this possibility, the dorsal columns of the spinal cord were sectioned between cervical levels (C3-5) 3-12 days after birth…

Corticocortical projections to representations of the teeth, tongue, and face in somatosensory area 3b of macaques.

We placed injections of anatomical tracers into representations of the tongue, teeth, and face in the primary somatosensory cortex (area 3b) of macaque monkeys. Our injections revealed strong projections to representations of the tongue and teeth from other parts of the oral cavity responsive region in 3b. The 3b face also provided input to the representations of the intraoral structures. The primary representation of the face showed a pattern of intrinsic connections similar to that of the mouth. The area 3b hand representation provided little to no input to either the mouth or the face repre…

Organization of the posterior parietal cortex in galagos: II. Ipsilateral cortical connections of physiologically identified zones within anterior sensorimotor region.

We studied cortical connections of functionally distinct movement zones of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in galagos identified by intracortical microstimulation with long stimulus trains ( approximately 500 msec). All these zones were in the anterior half of PPC, and each of them had a different pattern of connections with premotor (PM) and motor (M1) areas of the frontal lobe and with other areas of parietal and occipital cortex. The most rostral PPC zone has major connections with motor and visuomotor areas of frontal cortex as well as with somatosensory areas 3a and 1-2 and higher ord

A microglial activation cascade across cortical regions underlies secondary mechanical hypersensitivity to amputation.

Neural mechanisms underlying amputation-related secondary pain are unclear. Using in vivo two-photon imaging, three-dimensional reconstruction, and fiber photometry recording, we show that a microglial activation cascade from the primary somatosensory cortex of forelimb (S1FL) to the primary somatosensory cortex of hindlimb (S1HL) mediates the disinhibition and subsequent hyperexcitation of glutamatergic neurons in the S1HL (S1HLGlu), which then drives secondary mechanical hypersensitivity development in ipsilateral hindpaws of mice with forepaw amputation. Forepaw amputation induces rapid S1F…

Altered somatosensory processing in Parkinson's disease and modulation by dopaminergic medications.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory abnormalities contribute to the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). The goal of this study was to identif … s muscle. RESULTS: Compared to controls, PD subjects demonstrated diminished activation within the somatosensory cortex, reduced LAI and normal SAI, of which all were insensitive to dopaminergic medications. In addition to improving motor symptoms, dopaminergic medications reduced the hyperactivity observed within primary motor cortex in PD. CONCLUSIONS: Somatosenso …

CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that patients with dystonia have abnormal homeostatic inhibitory plasticity within the sensorimotor cortex and that this is responsible for their paradoxical response to high-frequency repetitive sensory stimulation. © 2018 …

Functional relevance of cross-modal plasticity in blind humans.

Functional imaging studies of people who were blind from an early age have revealed that their primary visual cortex can be activated by Braille reading and other tactile discrimination tasks. Other studies have also shown that visual cortical areas can be activated by somatosensory input in blind subjects but not those with sight. The significance of this cross-modal plasticity is unclear, however, as it is not known whether the visual cortex can process somatosensory information in a functionally relevant way. To address this issue, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt the fu

Somatosensory responses to nothing: An MEG study of expectations during omission of tactile stimulations.

The brain builds up expectations to future events based on the patterns of past events. This function has been studied extensively in the au … xpected stimulation. This somatosensory response to "nothing" was source localized to the secondary somatosensory cortex and to the insula. This provides novel evidence of the capability of the brain of millisecond time-keeping of somatosensory patterns across intervals of 3000 ms. Our results also show that when stimuli are repeated and expectations are established, …

[Early somesthetic evoked potentials and sensory deficits in thalamic and juxta-thalamic lesions. Clinical, electrophysiological and x-ray computed tomographic study in 70 patients].

The loss of SEP parietal components confirmed the deafferentation of somatosensory cortex in infarctions of geniculothalamic or anterior choroidian arteries territory. SEPs were found to be normal in infarctions of other arterial territories, in agreement with the clinical evidence of normal somatosensory performances. In patients with haematomas, especially when located in the thalamus, there was no clear correlation between lesion sites and SEP data. Abnormal parietal re…

Somatosensory cortical representation of the body size.

The knowledge of the size of our own body parts is essential for accurately moving in space and efficiently interact with objects. A distorted perceptual representation of the body size often represents a core diagnostic criterion for some psychopathological conditions. The metric representation of the body was shown to depend on somatosensory afferences: local deafferentation indeed causes a perceptual distortion of the size of the anesthetized body part. A specular effect can be induced by altering the cortical map of body parts in the primary somatosensory cortex. Indeed, the present study …
