Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer is a common and effective procedure used to treat chronic Achilles tendon rupture. Minimally invasive techniques have risen in popularity in response to wound-healing problems associated with open techniques. In addition, surgical approaches with a percutaneous plantar incision to harvest the FHL tendon at zone 2 have reported potential for damage to neurovascular structures. Previously, we reported the development of a novel all-inside endoscopic FHL zone 1 tenotomy and transfer approach that exhibited no insult to the neurovascular structures. The

BACKGROUD: Lower trapezius transfer (LTT) has emerged as a promising surgical option for irreparable posterosuperior massive rotator cuff tears (PSMRCTs), particularly for restoring external rotation and improving shoulder function. The transverse force couple, formed by the balanced action of the subscapularis anteriorly and the infraspinatus and teres minor posteriorly, is essential for maintaining shoulder stability and kinematics. However, outcomes remain variable, and predictors of suboptimal recovery are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate clinical and radio

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Achilles tendon rupture is primarily caused by degenerative processes of multifactorial origin. In addition to secondary repair (SR) with augmentation of the plantaris longus tendon, the transfer of the flexor hallucis longus tendon (FHL) to the calcaneus is a recognised reconstruction procedure. This paper aims to provide a direct comparison based on clinical scores and objectifiable strength measurements.
METHODS: We analysed data for 60 patients (46 males and 14 females) with chronic Achilles tendon rupture, including 34 (mean age 57 years) treated with FHL and 26 (me

The primary aim was to determine the improvement in patient-reported functional outcomes (PROMs) following extensor indicis proprius (EIP) transfer for a closed rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon. Secondary aims were to analyze the impact of this procedure on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and satisfaction. Preoperative and one-year postoperative PROMs were collected prospectively at a single institution over a two-year period (2014-2016). The primary outcome measure was the QuickDASH score. Patients also completed satisfaction scores, and the EQ-5D-5L score was used

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the radial nerve can occur at any point along its anatomical route, and the etiology quite varies. A particular entity are war injuries of the extremities, which have high morbidity but low mortality. After irreparable radial nerve injury, the only treatment is tendon transfer (if we neglect arthrodesis) with over then 40 methods. Four tendon transfers are considered as better than the other and two of them are the subject of our article flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU).
AIM: To evaluate the ultimate functional results of forearm tendon tran

Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer to the calcaneus in the repair of delayed or neglected Achilles tendon (AT) injuries is a viable and dynamic option. Nineteen patients (18 males, 1 female; mean age 47.4 ± 12.4, range 24 to 74, years; body mass index 27.5 ± 4.5, range 23.2 to 38.9, kg/m2; interval from injury to surgery 40.8 ± 11.6, range 28 to 60, days) with delayed or neglected repair of AT rupture were included in the present study. FHL transfer to the calcaneus through a single incision and repair of the defect with native tendon lengthening or a tendinous turndown flap was perf

Checkrein deformity is a relatively rare condition caused by hypotrophy or adhesion of a tendon after a lower leg injury. The occurrence of this condition due to the dysfunction of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) is extremely rare. Only a few related case reports have been published, and Z-lengthening of the EHL tendon was performed for almost all patients. We report a case of checkrein deformity due to EHL hypotrophy. The patient was involved in a traffic accident 7 years ago. He sustained left tibial and fibular closed diaphyseal fractures and underwent minimally invasive plate osteosynth

Tetraplegia, paralysis of all 4 limbs, is usually the result of cervical spinal cord injury. Recovery of independence is the primary goal of people with tetraplegia; this requires reconstruction of upper extremity function. Active elbow extension, necessary for a wide range of activities of daily living, is usually surgically reconstructible. The posterior deltoid-to-triceps tendon transfer was developed to restore active elbow extension; good functional results and high levels of patient satisfaction have been reported for this operation.

One hundred nine obstetrical palsy patients with defective shoulder abduction and external rotation had subscapularis release and transfer of teres major to infraspinatus with or without pedicle transfer of the clavicular head of pectoralis major to deltoid. The age at surgery averaged 67 months (11-192) and follow-up averaged 36 months (12-80). Thirty-nine cases had follow-up CT scan of both shoulders. Improvement of abduction averaged 64 degrees and that of external rotation 50 degrees, 100% and 290% gain, respectively. Both negatively correlated with the age at surgery (P < 0.001), and were

The resistance rebuilt around the lower tip of the piston must be the same as that created by the annular ligament of the stapes footplate. Otherwise, the threshold at which an acoustic or barotrauma is able to damage the membranes and hair cells of the inner ear will be lowered. The elasticity reestablished around the lower tip of the piston plays a part in the quality and quantity of hearing for the low frequencies up to 3 kHz. To protect the ear against acoustic traumas, an attempt to rebuild the stapedial reflex is proposed.

Introduction Idiopathic clubfoot is a common congenital anomaly that is treated with the Ponseti method in accordance with the guidelines showing excellent results. Nevertheless, relapse may occur for which a tibialis anterior tendon transfer (TATT) has been described as a useful treatment. However, a guideline describing the exact indication, surgical techniques and postoperative care of a TATT is not available yet. The aim of this study is to provide a survey-based overview of the pre-, peri- and postoperative steps of the various methods that are used to perform the TATT procedure throughou

BACKGROUND: Tendon transfers are often utilized to improve shoulder external rotation and abduction in children with brachial plexus birth injuries and are designed to improve glenohumeral (GH) joint motion. However, changes in scapulothoracic (ST) and GH joint function after tendon transfer are not well defined. The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in GH, ST, and humerothoracic (HT) joint function before and after tendon transfer, and we hypothesized that tendon transfers would reorient the arc of motion into more external rotation and abduction, but not increase GH motion.

Femoral nerve injury is a rare but devastating complication of direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty that occurs in about 1% of the cases and could potentially lead to debilitating loss of knee extension. In this case report, we present a case of femoral nerve injury following direct anterior approach hip arthroplasty with an inability to extend the affected knee, gait instability, and multiple falls. For this patient, an innovative functional adductor magnus muscle transfer was performed to restore knee extension. At 6 months after surgery, the patient's knee extension was partly re

Several options exist for the management of irreparable rotator cuff tears without advanced arthritic changes. Tendon transfer poses technical challenges and has limited but promising outcomes data. Newer procedures such as balloon spacers and bursal acromial reconstruction are currently being investigated as a reproducible solution to this challenging problem. Ultimately the decision to continue with conservative measures, use one of the aforementioned techniques, or proceed with reverse shoulder arthroplasty remains a decision to be made in the context of patient's unique demands and provide

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder dislocation is one of the disabling complications of brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI), and various treatment options including capsule and surrounding muscles release for open reduction, humeral derotational osteotomy, and tendon transfers have been recommended to manage it. In the present study, we aimed to determine the clinical outcome of open reduction with soft tissue release, tendon transfer, and glenoid osteotomy in patients with BPBI and posterior shoulder dislocation or subluxation.
METHODS: From 2018 to 2020, 33 patients who underwent open reduction
