Epiphyseal stippling in acrodysostosis.

Widespread epiphyseal stippling was demonstrated radiologically during the early months of life in 7 children with acrodysostosis. This finding, which does not seem to have been previously documented in this disorder, is important in the differential diagnosis.

[Developmental bone abnormalities, their variants and the delay of osteogenesis in children with leukemia].

When analyzing the Roentgen documentation of 102 leukaemic children, the prevalence of bone anomalies of the extremities, pelvis and vertebral column was studied. The frequency of the abnormal or unusual findings was compared with that of 660 control subjects. The frequency of osseous anomalies proved to be 2 to 3 times higher in leukaemic children tha in the controls. Considering the number of ossification centers and the presence nutritional canal of vertebrae, in leukaemic children the ossification seemed to be retarded.

Diagnosis of von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis and the Albright syndrome. Two case reports.

We describe two females who were diagnosed as suffering from the Albright syndrome early in childhood. Both have close relatives with neurofibromatosis; it has been established that one of the two, in fact, has von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis, while it remains uncertain if the other one also has this disorder. Apart from the pattern of café-au-lait hyperpigmentation, these two patients have several symptoms in common: repeated and spontaneous bone fractures leading to pseudarthrosis, frontal bossing, and kyphoscoliosis. Distinguishing between the two diseases is important for genetic coun

[A case of pycnodysostosis--observation of the skull by CT scan].

A 13-year-old boy was presented to the Department of Neurosurgery, Saiseikai Fukuoka General Hospital for further examinations concerning abnormal findings in the skull radiogram taken when he struck his head. His physical features showed some characteristics the same as those of pycnodysostosis as follows--proportionate dwarfism, prominent forehead, short spoon-shaped fingers, bilateral exophthalmos. A skull radiogram revealed widely open cranial sutures with no healing of the fracture and craniotomy which was performed for an acute epidural hematoma 6 years ago. Furthermore, the mandible was

Mitral valve prolapse in a patient with frontometaphyseal dysplasia.

Frontometaphyseal dysplasia (FMD) was described by Gorlin and Cohen 1969. Since then, 20 cases have been reported. The common findings include a characteristic face with particularly prominent supraorbital ridges, defective vision, hearing and dentition, micrognathia, high arched palate, winged scapulae, limited joint motion, and poorly developed musculature. Despite the presence of a heart murmur described in several patients, a specific cardiac lesion has not been diagnosed. This report describes a patient with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and FMD.

Tibiotalar tilt--a new slant.

Classically tibiotalar tilt (TTT) is associated with four conditions: Fairbanks disease, hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. We have found it to be present in at least 20 other conditions including other dysplasias, developmental conditions such as fibrous dysplasia and a variety of other acquired disorders including various metabolic diseases and following previous trauma. The pathogenesis is controversial, but the most probable cause is related to stress and the blood supply of the distal tibial epiphysis. The differentiation of TTT from pseudotibiotalar tilt is

[Fibrochondrogenesis].

Fibrochondrogenesis is a lethal form of dwarfism similar to thanatophoric dwarfism. It is distinguished radiologically by the widening of the metaphyses of the long bones, and, on lateral x-ray of the spine, by a median fissure of the body of the vertebra without any loss of vertebral height. The condition is inherited an autosomal recessive. A study of growing cartilage confirms that this disease is a distinct entity as there is fibrosis of the cartilage which is never present in thanatophoric dwarfism or in the different forms of achondrogenesis.

Raine syndrome: a rare lethal osteosclerotic bone dysplasia. Prenatal diagnosis, autopsy, and neuropathological findings.

Raine syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition with generalized osteosclerosis, characteristic facial dysmorphism and brain abnormalities including intracerebral calcifications. We report on a case with Raine syndrome born to nonconsanguineous couple and report the prenatal sonogram/MRI, the fetopathology, and neuropathology findings.

Vitamin D's role in health and disease: How does the present inform our understanding of the past?

While the role of vitamin D in supporting bone homeostasis during growth and maintenance is well substantiated, emerging evidence from ecological and observational studies suggests that a deficiency of vitamin D is associated with some cancers, immune disorders, cardiovascular disease, abnormal glucose metabolism, and neurodegenerative diseases. Biological plausibility for extraskeletal functions originated with the discovery of the vitamin D receptor in many body tissues and knowledge that the conversion of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) to its active metabolite 1,25(OH)2D occurs in many cell

Atraumatic palmar midcarpal dislocation in a skeletally immature adolescent with hemiatrophy.

We report a late presentation of a palmar midcarpal dislocation in an adolescent female with open growth plates who had no history of antecedent wrist injury. Midcarpal arthrodesis improved function and eliminated progressive pain.

Predicting Deformity Correction of Growth Modulation in Late-onset Tibia Vara.

BACKGROUND: Growth modulation in late-onset tibia vara (LOTV) has been reported to yield variable results. We hypothesized that parameters of deformity severity, skeletal maturity, and body weight could predict the odds of a successful outcome. METHODS: A retrospective review of tension band growth modulation for LOTV (onset ≥8 y) was performed at 7 centers. Tibial/overall limb deformity and hip/knee physeal maturity were assessed on preoperative anteroposterior standing lower-extremity digital radiographs. Tibial deformity change with first-time lateral tibial tension band plating (first LTT

Guided Growth Procedures: Broken Tension Band Implants in Patients With Blount Disease.

BACKGROUND: Tension band plate and screw implants (TBI) are frequently used for temporary hemiepiphyseodeses to manage angular deformity in growing children. The reported implant breakage rate, when TBI is used for deformities in patients with Blount disease, is much higher than when used in other diagnoses. Our hypothesis is that perioperative factors can identify risks for TBI breakage. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was performed of 246 TBI procedures in 113 patients with Blount disease at 8 tertiary pediatric orthopaedic centers from 2008 to 2018. Patient demographics, age at

De novo heterozygous variants in KIF5B cause kyphomelic dysplasia.

Kyphomelic dysplasia is a heterogeneous group of skeletal dysplasias characterized by severe bowing of the limbs associated with other variable findings, such as narrow thorax and abnormal facies. We searched for the genetic etiology of this disorder. Four individuals diagnosed with kyphomelic dysplasia were enrolled. We performed whole-exome sequencing and evaluated the pathogenicity of the identified variants. All individuals had de novo heterozygous variants in KIF5B encoding kinesin-1 heavy chain: two with c.272A>G:p.(Lys91Arg), one with c.584C>A:p.(Thr195Lys), and the other with c.701G>T:
