Surface Functionalization of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Scaffolds to Enhance Microparticle Attachment.

While the use of polymer micro- and nanoparticles for drug delivery has been demonstrated for diverse biomedical applications, not all techniques have allowed for the precise localization of the drug that is needed to support surrounding tissues. Herein, we report a biocompatible thermoplastic polyurethane silk fibroin composite drug delivery platform for localized drug release. The work leverages two distinct materials, combining the biocompatibility of silk fibroin protein particles as a drug carrier with the modularity of a thermoplastic polyurethane scaffold, whose mechanical properties ar

Development of fish scale collagen-immobilized poly(lactic acid) films using chemical treatment with hexamethylenediamine.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate how immobilizing tilapia fish scale type 1 collagen onto poly(lactic acid) (PLA), following chemical modification with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), affects the adhesion and proliferation of mouse osteoblast-like cells (OLCs). METHODS: PLA films were chemically modified by HMDA immersion to introduce amino groups (-NH2) (PLA-NH2). Tilapia fish scale type 1 collagen was subsequently immobilized onto the PLA-NH2 surface via a water-soluble carbodiimide condensation reaction, producing (TFColl-PLA-NH2). Surface properties of the films were characterized using

Biointegrated Conductive Hydrogel for Real-Time Motion Sensing in Exoskeleton-Assisted Lower-Limb Rehabilitation.

Chronic lower-extremity wounds in patients undergoing exoskeleton-assisted rehabilitation require materials that can both protect tissue and enable real-time physiological monitoring. Conventional dressings lack dynamic sensing capability, while current conductive hydrogels often compromise either adhesion or electronic performance. Here, we present a biointegrated hydrogel (CPSD) composed of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) forming the conductive backbone, integrated with dopamine-functionalized sodium alginate (SD); the net

A highly sensitive photoelectrochemical immunosensor for cancer antigen (CA 125) based on a nanoplatform of carbon dots and cadmium sulphide.

The prognosis for ovarian cancer is often poor due to late diagnosis. This is because the disease rarely presents with any specific symptoms in the early stage. There is therefore a need to develop a sensitive device for the routine screening of CA 125, the most widely used biomarker for detecting and monitoring ovarian malignancy. Herein, we report the development of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with a carbon nanodot/cadmium sulphide (CND/CdS) heterostructure for the sensitive detection of CA 125. Using a drop-casting tec

Preparation of hybrid SPIONs and nanodiamonds in view of neurodegenerative diseases treatments.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely used in biomedical applications due to their unique magnetic and physicochemical properties. Surface stabilization and functionalization further expand their applicability in biological environments and help overcome the challenges of achieving targeted therapy. Here, nanodiamonds (NDs) decorated with SPIONs were developed for a dual therapy approach combining magnetic and optical properties: NDs offer excellent properties for optical imaging while SPIONs serve as effective contrast agents. In the present study, amino-PEGylated SPI

Synthesis, Photophysical Characterization, and DFT Analysis of (E)-1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(1-benzyl-pyrrol-2-yl) Prop-2-en-1-one, a Novel Aminochalcone that can be Used as a Fluorescent Probe for Protein Labeling.

A novel aminochalcone, (E)-1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(1-benzyl-pyrrol-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one, was synthesized via Claisen-Schmidt condensation and fully characterized using FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and GC-MS analysis. The compound's photophysical properties were studied using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy in solvents of varying polarity. These studies revealed marked solvatochromic and solvatofluorochromic behavior, which is consistent with an intramolecular charge-transfer process. In polar media, the compound exhibited strong bathochromic shifts and a solvent-dependent fluorescence

Dopamine-modified hyaluronic acid hydrogel's role in spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most severe diseases in the world caused by violence or accidents, often leading to the loss of sensation, movement, and autonomic nervous function, resulting in a high rate of disability. Current clinical treatment strategies often fail to meet expectations. Here, we designed a dopamine (DP)-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel combined with neurotrophic factors (NGF) to improve the adverse microenvironment after spinal cord injury (SCI) and promote axonal regeneration. HA, as a "scaffolding molecule," utilizes the reaction between 1-ethyl-(3-dimethyla

Exploring pectin-casein micelles as novel carriers for oral drug delivery of artesunate in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus.

The oral route of administration is considered the optimal choice for treating chronic diseases due to its convenience and non-invasiveness, which can help prevent physical and mental harm to patients undergoing long-term treatment. However, challenges such as safety, gastrointestinal stability, and bioavailability of oral drugs often limit their effectiveness. Natural biomacromolecule micelles, known for their safety, stability, biocompatibility, and diverse functions, have emerged as promising carriers for oral treatment of chronic diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with fat-so

Nano-antibiotic based on silver nanoparticles functionalized to the vancomycin-cysteamine complex for treating Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial resistance is defined as a microorganism's capacity to develop mechanisms for resisting a determined antimicrobial. Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), are internationally recognized among the isolates with this resistance profile. In this context, the demand for new medicines has risen, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been highlighted, especially for their anti-bacterial effects. To develop a nano-antibiotic for treating these Gram-positive strains, we herein report synthesizing and characterizi

A Biomimetic, Bilayered Antimicrobial Collagen-Based Scaffold for Enhanced Healing of Complex Wound Conditions.

Chronic, nonhealing wounds in the form of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a major complication for diabetic patients. The inability of a DFU to heal appropriately leads to an open wound with a high risk of infection. Current standards of care fail to fully address either the underlying defective wound repair mechanism or the risk of microbial infection. Thus, it is clear that novel approaches are needed. One such approach is the use of multifunctional biomaterials as platforms to direct and promote wound healing. In this study, a biomimetic, bilayered antimicrobial collagen-based scaffold was

Phosphoserine-loaded chitosan membranes promote bone regeneration by activating endogenous stem cells.

Bone defects that result from trauma, infection, surgery, or congenital malformation can severely affect the quality of life. To address this clinical problem, a phosphoserine-loaded chitosan membrane that consists of chitosan membranes serving as the scaffold support to accommodate endogenous stem cells and phosphoserine is synthesized. The introduction of phosphoserine greatly improves the osteogenic effect of the chitosan membranes via mutual crosslinking using a crosslinker (EDC, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-carbodiimide). The morphology of PS-CS membranes was shown by scanning elect

Mussel-Inspired Catechol Functionalisation as a Strategy to Enhance Biomaterial Adhesion: A Systematic Review.

Biomaterials have long been explored in regenerative medicine strategies for the repair or replacement of damaged organs and tissues, due to their biocompatibility, versatile physicochemical properties and tuneable mechanical cues capable of matching those of native tissues. However, poor adhesion under wet conditions (such as those found in tissues) has thus far limited their wider application. Indeed, despite its favourable physicochemical properties, facile gelation and biocompatibility, gellan gum (GG)-based hydrogels lack the tissue adhesiveness required for effective clinical use. Aiming

Ferritin, a blood cell protein containing iron, is a crucial biomarker that is used to estimate the risk assessment of iron deficiency anemia. For point-of-care analysis, a reliable, cost-effective, selective, sensitive, and portable tool is extremely necessary. In this study, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor for detecting ferritin using a paper-based analytical device (ePAD) was created. The device pattern was custom designed onto filter paper to successfully fabricate a deliverable immunosensor. Graphene oxide was first modified onto the working electrode using an inkjet printing te

Stability Designs of Cell Membrane Cloaked Magnetic Carbon Nanotubes for Improved Life Span in Screening Drug Leads.

Convenient strategies to provide natural cell membranes (CMs)-camouflaged nanomaterials with enhanced stability would prompt the advancement of CMs-coated biomimetic technology and expand the application of these emerging nanomaterials. Herein, we have developed stability-enhanced CMs-camouflaged magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) to screen drug leads from traditional Chinese medicine (TCMs) that target membrane receptors. By modifying MCNTs with N-ethyl-N'-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), the resulting covalent immobilized CMs-camouflag

Formulation and Characterization of Conjugate Vaccines to Reduce Opioid Use Disorders Suitable for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Clinical Evaluation.

This study focused on formulating conjugate vaccines targeting oxycodone and heroin for technology transfer, good manufacturing practice (GMP), and clinical evaluation. Lead vaccines used the highly immunogenic carrier protein keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), which poses formulation problems because of its size. To address this barrier to translation, an oxycodone-based hapten conjugated to GMP-grade subunit KLH (OXY-sKLH) and adsorbed on alum adjuvant was studied with regard to carbodiimide coupling reaction time, buffer composition, purification methods for conjugates, conjugate size, state
