Optimization of antibacterial and antifungal activities in Moroccan saffron by-products using mixture design and simplex centroid methodology.

The health risks associated with synthetic preservatives have intensified the search for natural antimicrobial alternatives. Crocus sativus L. (saffron) generates abundant by-products, such as tepals and leaves, which are rich in bioactive compounds with demonstrated antimicrobial potential. Compared to other natural alternatives, saffron by-products offer distinct advantages, including a unique combination of phenolic compounds (e.g., ellagic acid, rutin) and carotenoids (e.g., crocin) that act synergistically against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. Additional…

Determination of the Polyphenol Composition of Raspberry Leaf Using LC-MS/MS.

BACKGROUND: Raspberry leaf (RL; Rubus idaeus) is a by-product of raspberry cultivation and has been proposed to be a rich source of micronut … her than that with shorter (409.84 mg/100g) and longer extraction times (429.28 mg/100 g). Notably, ellagic acid levels were highest at 5 min (380.29 mg/100 g), while phenolic acid peaked at 15 min (50.96 mg/100 g). The flavonoid content was shown to be highest at 4 min (82.58 mg/100 g). CONCLUSIONS: RL contains a relatively high level of polyphenols, particu …

Antioxidant potential, enzyme inhibitory activity and HPLC-MS/MS phenolics profiles in Salvia aegyptiaca L. (Lamiaceae, Nepetoideae, Mentheae) growing in Tunisia.

The present study aimed to assess for the first time the antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activities of phenolic secondary metabolites of Tunisian Salvia aegyptiaca extracted using different solvents (methanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform and hexane). The phytochemical composition was examined via HPLC-MS/MS. The evaluation of the antioxidant effects involved the utilization of multiple techniques including phosphomolybdenum, antiradical (DPPH and ABTS), reducing power (FRAP and CUPRAC), and ferrous chelating assays. Additionally, the inhibitory activity was tested on different enzymes: α-amyla

Potential Anticancer Effects of Polyphenols from Chestnut Shell Extracts: Modulation of Cell Growth, and Cytokinomic and Metabolomic Profiles.

In this study, a hydroalcoholic chestnut shell extract was characterized and tested on six different human cell lines. Gallic, ellagic, and syringic acids were the most abundant non-condensed compounds in the chestnut extract, as determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Tannins were mainly represented by condensed monomeric units of epigallocatechin and catechin/epicatechin. After 48 h of treatment, only the human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells reached an inhibition corresponding to IC50 with an increase of apoptosis and mitochondrial depolarization. The cytokinome evaluation b

A density functional theory benchmark on antioxidant-related properties of polyphenols.

In this work, we present a density functional theory benchmark on antioxidant-related properties for a series of six polyphenols that are well-known antioxidants: caffeic acid, cyanidin, ellagic acid, gallic acid, myricetin, and phloretin. Computations on the 24 O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) and 6 ionization potentials (IPs) were performed using twenty-three exchange-correlation functionals combined with four different basis sets in the gas-phase, water, and methanol; calibration against the Domain-based Local Pair Natural Orbital CCSD(T) (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) approach was employed. Mean a…

Preparation, In Vivo and Molecular Docking Study of Nano-Emulsion Obtained From the Isolated Phytoconstituents of Symplocos racemosa for Mitigating Depression.

Depression is a prevalent, chronic, and debilitating disorder characterized by high treatment resistance. Symplocos racemosa, containing phenols and triterpenoids, acts as an antidepressant by elevating brain monoamine levels. This study aimed to enhance the targeted delivery of S. racemosa via nano-emulsion and improve its therapeutic efficacy against depression. In addition, it sought to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying its effects through molecular docking studies. S. racemosa bark was extracted using methanol and ethyl acetate, yielding six phytoconstituents (ellagic acid, bet…

Cytotoxic and NF-κB and mitochondrial transmembrane potential inhibitory pentacyclic triterpenoids from Syzygium corticosum and their semi-synthetic derivatives.

Syzygium is a large genus of flowering plants, with several species, including the clove tree, used as important resources in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In our continuing search for anticancer agents from higher plants, a chloroform extract of the leaves and twigs of Syzygium corticosum collected in Vietnam was found to be active toward the HT-29 human colon cancer cell line. Separation of this extract guided by HT-29 cells and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition yielded 19 known natural products, including seven triterpenoids, three ellagic acid derivatives, two methylated …
