Chromist parasites of the genus Eimeria are the causative agent of coccidiosis, an economically important disease of poultry characterized by enteritis, reduced growth performance and decrease in egg production. In the Philippines, Eimeria infections have largely been reported through conventional coproparasitological techniques; however, molecular investigations on the distribution of specific Eimeria species and quantitative assessments of infection intensity are lacking. In the present study, molecular surveillance of Eimeria infections was conducted in various commercial poultry farms in t

In recent years, interest in biosecurity practices on livestock farms has expanded considerably, with improvements noted in pig and poultry farms but limited progress in cattle farms. In France, data regarding biosecurity practices in cattle farms remains scarce. Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is one of the main animal health challenges. Each case leads to mandatory epidemiological investigation, led by state services. Biosecurity practices are also described. This creates a valuable data source to describe biosecurity practices in bTB-affected farms. This study aimed to describe biosecurity practi

Rotaviruses (RVs) are an important cause of piglet diarrhea. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of rotavirus A, B, and C (RVA, RVB and RVC) in two RVA-vaccinated (VAC) and four non-vaccinated (NON-VAC) farms, and the impact of RVA vaccination on production parameters. Additionally, RVs prevalence in consecutive weekly groups from one vaccinated and one non-vaccinated farm was assessed. Diarrheic feces or ileum content were screened for RVs using real-time RT-PCR. In VAC, no RVA or RVB was detected, while RVC was found in all the samples (15/15). In NON-VAC, RVA, RVB, and RVC were det

This study, one of the few conducted to date on working farms in the US, examined per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in 10 farms treated with biosolids using a paired control-treatment approach. Biosolids are nutrient-rich and inexpensive soil amendments, however, if the biosolids contain PFAS which are known to be toxic, mobile and to bioaccumulate, they can leave lasting negative impacts on farming soil and water. Our study showed significantly higher concentrations of PFAS in biosolids-treated (treatment) soils compared to (untreated) controls. Soil depth, soil physico

Urban malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa is often underestimated, emphasizing the need for research on vector distribution, abundance, behavior, and infectivity in cities. Urban malaria transmission has been on the rise across sub-Saharan Africa since 2003. Also, monitoring Anopheles populations is crucial for developing effective interventions. This study examined the biting and resting habits, distribution, abundance, and Plasmodium infection of malaria vectors in Accra. Adult malaria vectors were collected using human landing catch (HLC) and Prokopack aspiration (PPK) at ten sites i

Livestock-keeping in peri-urban areas might influence mosquito-borne diseases by attracting more mosquitoes or by diverting mosquitoes from feeding on humans. In this study, we compared the mosquito community structure across pig farms, human settlements around pig farms, and human settlements without pig farms in peri-urban areas of Yogyakarta. We collected mosquitoes using ultraviolet light traps from three large pig farms (10 traps), 120 human settlements near pig farms (20 traps), and 120 human settlements without pig farms (20 traps) in Yogyakarta. The adult mosquitoes were morphologicall

Cryptosporidium spp. are protozoan parasites that cause cryptosporidiosis, an enteric disease that can affect a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Pigs play a potential role in the transmission of Cryptosporidium spp. to humans, although infections are most often subclinical. This study aimed to assess the occurrence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. in swine farms located in Aragón, northeastern Spain. Fecal samples (n = 72) were collected from 10 breeding farms, encompassing various production stages (lactation, nursery, fattening, and/or wean-to-finish). Data regarding the

Limiting the use of antimicrobial agents in intensive livestock production is a challenge due to different perceptions between the short-term benefits of antimicrobial use (AMU) by livestock producers and the long-term social costs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its impact on human, animal, and environmental health. Pig farmers are key stakeholders supporting Thailand's national strategic plan on AMR which aims to reduce antimicrobial consumption in the livestock sector. Consequently, this study explored the knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, and practices of pig farmers towards AMU and
