Speech processing asymmetry revealed by dichotic listening and functional brain imaging.

In this article, we review research in our laboratory from the last 25 to 30 years on the neuronal basis for laterality of speech perception focusing on the upper, posterior parts of the temporal lobes, and its functional and structural connections to other brain regions. We review both behavioral and brain imaging data, with a focus on dichotic listening experiments, and using a variety of imaging modalities. The data have come in most parts from healthy individuals and from studies on normally functioning brain, although we also review a few selected clinical examples. We first review and di

Unconscious processing of emotions and the right hemisphere.

This survey takes into account the unconscious aspects of emotions and the critical role played in them by the right hemisphere, considering different acceptations of the term 'unconscious'. In a preliminary step, the nature of emotions, their componential and hierarchical organization and the relationships between emotions and hemispheric specialization are shortly discussed, then different aspects of emotions are surveyed: first are reviewed studies dealing with the unconscious processing of emotional information, taking separately into account various lines of research. All these studies su

Can understanding the neurobiology of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) inform treatment?

OBJECTIVES: We aim to provide a clinically focused review of the neurobiological literature in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), with a focus on structural and functional neuroimaging. CONCLUSIONS: There has been a recent influx of studies examining the underlying neurobiology of BDD using structural and functional neuroimaging methods. Despite obvious symptom similarities with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), no study to date has directly compared the two groups using neuroimaging techniques. Studies have established that there are limbic and visual cortex abnormalities in BDD, in contrast…

Unveiling the hemispheric specialization of language: Organization and neuroplasticity.

The advancements in understanding hemispheric specialization of language (HSL) have been following two primary avenues: the development of neuroimaging techniques and the study of its reorganizations in patients with various neuropathologic conditions. Hence, the objectives of this chapter are twofold. First, to provide an overview of the key neuroimaging techniques employed to investigate HSL, along with the notable findings derived from them in the healthy population. Second, it focuses on the reorganization of HSL in physiologic (healthy aging) and pathologic (poststroke aphasia and tempora

A Narrative Review on Clinical Applications of fNIRS.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a relatively new imaging modality in the functional neuroimaging research arena. The fNIRS modality non-invasively investigates the change of blood oxygenation level in the human brain utilizing the transillumination technique. In the last two decades, the interest in this modality is gradually evolving for its real-time monitoring, relatively low-cost, radiation-less environment, portability, patient-friendliness, etc. Including brain-computer interface and functional neuroimaging research, this technique has some important application of clini…

In vivo B0 field shimming methods for MRI at 7T.

Functional MRI (fMRI) at 7T and above provides improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Contrast-to-Noise Ratio compared to 3T acquisitions. In addition to the beneficial effects on spin polarization and magnetization of deoxyhemoglobin, the increased applied field also further magnetizes air and tissue. While the magnets themselves typically provide a static B0 field with sufficient spatial homogeneity, the diamagnetism of tissue and the paramagnetism of air causes local field deviations inside the human head. These spatially-varying field offsets (ΔB0) cause image artifacts, especially in single s

The neural mechanisms of hallucinations: A quantitative meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging data was used to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying auditory-verbal and visual hallucinations (AVHs and VHs). Consistent activation across studies during AVHs, but not VHs, in Wernicke's and Broca's areas is consistent with involvement of speech and language processes in the experience of hearing voices when none are present. Similarly, greater activity in auditory cortex during AVHs and in visual cortex during VHs supports models proposing over-stimulation of sensory cortices in the generation of these percept…

Developmental meta-analyses of the functional neural correlates of bipolar disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a debilitating mental illness associated with high costs to diagnosed individuals and society. Within the past 2 decades, increasing numbers of children and adolescents have been diagnosed as having BD. While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have begun to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying BD, few have directly compared differences in youths with BD and adults with BD (hereafter BD-youths and BD-adults, respectively). OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that BD-youths (<18 years old) would show greater convergence of amygdala hy

Mechanisms for widespread hippocampal involvement in cognition.

The quintessential memory system in the human brain--the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe--is often treated as a module for the formation of conscious, or declarative, memories. However, growing evidence suggests that the hippocampus plays a broader role in memory and cognition and that theories organizing memory into strictly dedicated systems may need to be updated. We first consider the historical evidence for the specialized role of the hippocampus in declarative memory. Then, we describe the serendipitous encounter that motivated the special section in this issue, based on

Recent advances in the brain imaging of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common and disabling anxiety disorders, yet much remains to be learned about its psychobiology. Although functional imaging has emphasized the role of the amygdala and other limbic structures in the neurobiology of SAD, structural and connectivity imaging techniques have emphasized the possibility of abnormalities in other regions and in whole-brain networks. The involvement of a broad range of networks in SAD is consistent with current understandings of the neuroanatomy of emotion and of social processing.

Recovery after moderate to severe TBI and factors influencing functional outcome: What you need to know.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a major cause of death and disability, significantly impacting the lives of 2.5 million people annually in the United States. Long-term natural history studies have clarified that functional recovery continues for up to a decade, even among those who sustain severe TBI. Despite these findings, nihilistic attitudes regarding prognosis persist among clinicians, highlighting the need for improved understanding of the natural history of recovery from TBI and the factors that influence outcome. Recent advances in neuroimaging technologies and blood-based biom

Neural Signatures of Pain Modulation in Short-Term and Long-Term Mindfulness Training: A Randomized Active-Control Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Mindfulness-based interventions are widely used to target pain, yet their neural mechanisms of action are insufficiently understood. The authors studied neural and subjective pain response in a randomized active-control trial of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) alongside long-term meditation practitioners. METHODS: Healthy participants (N=115) underwent functional neuroimaging during a thermal acute pain task before and after random assignment to MBSR (N=28), an active control condition (health enhancement program [HEP]) (N=32), or a waiting list control condition (N=31). …

Auditory Hallucinations and the Brain's Resting-State Networks: Findings and Methodological Observations.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the potential for alterations to the brain's resting-state networks (RSNs) to explain various kinds of psychopathology. RSNs provide an intriguing new explanatory framework for hallucinations, which can occur in different modalities and population groups, but which remain poorly understood. This collaboration from the International Consortium on Hallucination Research (ICHR) reports on the evidence linking resting-state alterations to auditory hallucinations (AH) and provides a critical appraisal of the methodological approaches used in th

Role of functional brain imaging in understanding rheumatic pain.

Rheumatic pain and, in particular, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, are common and debilitating chronic pain syndromes. Recently, human functional neuroimaging, for example EEG, fMRI, and PET has begun to reveal some of the crucial central nervous system mechanisms underlying these diseases. The purpose of this review is to summarise current knowledge on the brain mechanisms of rheumatic pain revealed by functional neuroimaging techniques. The evidence suggests that two mechanisms may be largely responsible for the clinical pain associated with these rheumatic diseases: a…
