The association of child marriage with morbidities and mortality among children under 5 years in Afghanistan: findings from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: There is still a gap in knowledge of the impact that child marriage could have on the mortality and morbidity of children in Afghanistan. This study used the data from the latest Afghanistan demographic health survey conducted in 2015 (ADHS) to address this gap and advance the current knowledge. METHODS: A secondary analysis of the 2015 ADHS, including the births in the past 5 years to ever-married women aged 15-24 years old, was carried out. Logistic regression analyses were employed to examine the association of child marriage (< 18y) with morbidities (diarrhea, acute respirator…

A steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome in an infant resulting from a consanguineous marriage with COQ2 and ARSB gene mutations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) remains a challenge for paediatricians. SRNS accounts for 10~20% of childhood cases of nephrotic syndrome (NS). Individuals with SRNS overwhelmingly progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESRD). Genetic research is of great significance for diagnosis and treatment. More than 39 recessive or dominant genes have been found to cause human SRNS, including COQ2. COQ2 gene mutations not only cause primary coenzyme Q10 deficiency but also cause SRNS without extrarenal manifestations. The concept of CO

The "puberty deadline": cultural constructions of maturity, anticipated shame, and child marriage as a perceived risk-mitigation strategy in rural Niger.

INTRODUCTION: In rural Niger, child marriage remains highly prevalent, often functioning as a mechanism of risk mitigation. This qualitative study explores the cultural and bio-social drivers of child marriage, focusing on the intersection of physical maturation, anticipatory shame, and economic vulnerability. METHODS: The study drew on 53 in-depth interviews, six body mapping focus group discussions (FGDs), and 9 social norms mapping FGDs with adolescents, parents, and community leaders (n = 165) in the Maradi region. RESULTS: We find that participants perceive the biological onset of menar…

Role of Child Marriage and Adolescent Childbearing on Hysterectomy Among Married Women in India: A Cross-Sectional and Time-to-Event Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Child marriage forces a girl into adult roles before physical and psychological maturity, which can take a toll on women's health over the life course. This article aims to assess whether child marriage and adolescent childbearing are associated with elevated risk of gynaecologic disorders leading to hysterectomy. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and time-to-event analysis. SETTING: India. POPULATION: 528 816 ever-married women, aged 20-49 years. METHODS: Women were grouped in four mutually exclusive categories: (i) married adult-not an adolescent mother (reference category), (ii) marrie…

A Very Rare Case of Megalencephalic Leukoencephalopathy With Subcortical Cysts in a Child Born of Non-Consanguineous Marriage in a Non-Predisposed Community.

Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy (MLC) with subcortical cysts is a very rare white matter disorder characterized predominantly by motor developmental delay and seizures in a child with macrocephaly. Extrapyramidal symptoms, ataxia and mental retardation may also occur. Only a few cases of the disease have been reported worldwide with most of them showing an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. In India, most cases have been reported in Agrawal community. Here, we present an interesting case of MLC in a child born in non-Agrawal community to a non-consanguineous marriage. By reporting…

Sex linked versus autosomal inbreeding coefficient in close consanguineous marriages in the Basque country and Castile (Spain): genetic implications.

Pedigree structures of 161 uncle/niece-aunt/nephew and 4420 first cousin consanguineous marriages registered during the 19th and 20th centuries in two large and very different Spanish regions have been analysed and their genetic consequences evaluated. The frequencies of the different pedigree subtypes within each degree of relationship were quite similar in both populations despite significant heterogeneity in inbreeding patterns. The mean X-linked inbreeding coefficient (Fx) for each type of cousin mating was calculated and compared to that expected for autosomal genes (F). The effect of gen…

Path Analysis of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Early Marriage, Early Pregnancy, and Exposure to Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Women in Honduras.

PURPOSE: The pathways by which adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with early marriage and early pregnancy are poorly understood. Early marriage and early pregnancy may be risk factors for adulthood intimate partner violence (IPV). The aim of this study was to assess the relationships among ACEs, early marriage, early pregnancy, and IPV among women in Honduras. METHOD: We used weighted data from 1,436 women aged 18-24 years from the nationally representative 2017 Honduras Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. We used path analysis to estimate relationships and accounted …

Child marriage and risky health behaviors: an analysis of tobacco use among early adult and early middle-aged women in India.

BACKGROUND: Though the harmful impacts of child marriage have been evaluated across several domains, evidence on the relationship between child marriage and health behaviors over the life course is limited. In this paper, we examined whether getting married as a child is associated with one of the most common risky health behaviors, tobacco use, in adulthood. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from India, we compared the odds in favor of tobacco use among early adult (age 22-34) and early middle-aged (age 35-44) women who were married before age 18 with that of those who were marri…

Improved child marriage laws and its association with changing attitudes and experiences of intimate partner violence: a comparative multi-national study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a multi-national problem with many health consequences. Some research suggests that reducing rates of child marriage can improve gender norms and health outcomes related to IPV. Here, we examine whether changes in national child marriage laws can improve attitudes about domestic violence and reduce intimate partner violence at scale. METHODS: Data on attitudes towards violence and violence experienced were obtained from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and longitudinal data on child marriage policy from WORLD and MACHEquity databases (199…

Is There a Healthy Immigrant Effect Among Women Through Transnational Marriage? Results from Immigrant Women from Southeast Asian Countries in Taiwan.

In this study we examine whether there is healthy immigrant effect among women immigrated to Taiwan through transnational marriage. A sample of immigrant women (N = 246) with original nativity of Southeast Asian countries and Taiwanese-born women sample (N = 201) was recruited from December 2008 to December 2009. Their depressive symptoms, acculturative stresses and family functioning were assessed by a series of questionnaires. Immigrant women had lower depressive scores than their native-born counterparts when other potential confounders were controlled for in the multiple regression model. …

Responding to the increased genetic risk associated with customary consanguineous marriage among minority ethnic populations: lessons from local innovations in England.

Populations practising customary consanguineous marriage have a higher incidence of autosomal recessive genetic disorders than those in which reproductive partners are usually unrelated. In the absence of any national-level response, English service developments to address the additional needs of families living with or at risk of such disorders have been locally led. These interventions remain in their infancy here, as elsewhere in Europe, and important questions remain regarding how appropriate, effective and sustainable responses can be operationalised in practice. This formative service re…

The interplay of economic shocks and cultural practices in child marriage: Comparative evidence from India and Zambia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Child marriage is a critical issue in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic due to economic instability. This study examines the impact of the pandemic on child marriage rates in India and Zambia, focusing specifically on socio-cultural and economic influences. We collected quantitative and qualitative data from adolescent girls aged 13-18 years in India (n = 3,049) and 15-19 years in Zambia (n = 1,615) between February and September 2022. Multi-variable linear probability regression analyses were applied to assess the pandemic's effect on …

"Faith" as a Framework for Understanding Barriers and Enablers to Social and Behaviour Change Using Child Marriage in Mozambique, Nepal, and the Philippines as a Case Study.

This study examines the role of faith in social and behaviour change, using child marriage as a case study across Mozambique, Nepal, and the Philippines. While faith is widely acknowledged as a social force, its role in shaping behaviour remains underexplored in development programming. This research addresses that gap by proposing a multidimensional framework for understanding faith's influence on social norms and behaviour. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys (N = 986), focus group discussions, and key informant interviews conducted between 2020 and 2023. The study ident…

Rings and Rebuttals: A Quasi-Experimental Study on the Psychological Impact of Marriage Equality on Low-Income Black Sexual Minorities in the United Kingdom.

Critiques from queer theory have suggested that the legalization of same-sex marriage (SSM) predominantly benefits White, middle-class segments of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) community. This study investigates the impact of the legalization of SSM on mental health among Black LGB individuals, focusing on those with lower incomes in the UK. Using a nationally representative panel sample and employing a quasi-experimental methodology, we analyzed changes in psychological distress and life dissatisfaction following the legalization of SSM. Results indicate that the legalization of SSM si…
