What is the Source of Hypnotic Responses?

The author proposes that hypnosis is a culture-bound concept that has misattributed - to suggestion and hypnosis - the functioning of a natural, freestanding, human ability to alter personal experience. The 18th-century attribution of these phenomena (to the suggestions of a magnetizer) continues today because science and Western culture still do not explicitly acknowledge that humans possess a natural capacity to intentionally alter their own experiences. Like every other human ability (e.g. athletic, artistic, musical, mathematical, etc.), utilization of the natural human ability to intentio

Can we use genetic and genomic approaches to identify candidate animals for targeted selective treatment.

Estimated breeding values (EBV) for faecal egg count (FEC) and genetic markers for host resistance to nematodes may be used to identify resistant animals for selective breeding programmes. Similarly, targeted selective treatment (TST) requires the ability to identify the animals that will benefit most from anthelmintic treatment. A mathematical model was used to combine the concepts and evaluate the potential of using genetic-based methods to identify animals for a TST regime. EBVs obtained by genomic prediction were predicted to be the best determinant criterion for TST in terms of the impact

Immediate active short arc motion following extensor tendon repair.

Postoperative management of the extensor tendon injury has been altered over the past 15 years from treatment with 4 to 6 weeks of immobilization to controlled passive motion and, now, to active SAM with minimal tension and wrist tenodesis programs. The concepts of immediate motion are supported biochemically in experimental studies, and biomechanically through excursion studies, mathematical analysis of tendon excursion and force application, and study of repair tensile strengths. The results cited in this article and those reported by others demonstrate that early motion for extensor tendons

Morphological multiparameter filtration and persistent homology in mitochondrial image analysis.

The complexity of branching and curvilinear morphology of a complete mitochondrial network within each cell is challenging to analyze and quantify. To address this challenge, we developed an image analysis technique using persistent homology with a multiparameter filtration framework, combining image processing techniques in mathematical morphology. We show that such filtrations contain both topological and geometric information about complex cellular organelle structures, which allows a software program to extract meaningful features. Using this information, we also develop a connectivity ind

Use of Silicone Membrane Permeation to Assess Thermodynamic Activities of Ionic Liquids and Their Component Cation and Anion.

Ionic liquid (IL) was prepared by mixing lidocaine and ibuprofen as a cation and anion, respectively, at various ratios. We determined the permeation of both compounds from the IL through a silicone membrane selected as a model biological membrane, and mathematically analyzed the permeation data from the viewpoint of the thermodynamic activities of lidocaine, ibuprofen, and the IL. As a result, IL and ibuprofen diffusely permeated through the membrane in the case of applying IL preparations with a molar fraction of ibuprofen of 0.5 or higher. The IL was thought to separate into lidocaine and i

Mathematical modeling based on ordinary differential equations: A promising approach to vaccinology.

New contributions that aim to accelerate the development or to improve the efficacy and safety of vaccines arise from many different areas of research and technology. One of these areas is computational science, which traditionally participates in the initial steps, such as the pre-screening of active substances that have the potential to become a vaccine antigen. In this work, we present another promising way to use computational science in vaccinology: mathematical and computational models of important cell and protein dynamics of the immune system. A system of Ordinary Differential Equation

Fingering instability at the interface between growing and not-growing cell populations with different mobilities.

Invasion of solid tumours is often mediated by heterogeneous cell populations that differ in motility, adhesion, and proliferation. Motivated by these mechanisms, we study a two-population continuum model in which the total density generates a pressure field and cell transport follows a Darcy-type law, coupled to growth and nonlinear diffusion. The model admits planar travelling-wave solutions describing an advancing invasion front. We derive, in the planar travelling-wave geometry and in the incompressible limit, an explicit dispersion relation for transverse perturbations of segregated front

A Likelihood-Based Framework for Simultaneously Learning Both Noise and Growth Dynamics Using Biologically-Informed Neural Networks.

In recent years, neural ordinary differential equation frameworks such as Biologically-Informed Neural Networks (BINNs) have shown promise for learning mechanistic laws from sparse data. However, most existing approaches implicitly assume homoscedastic Gaussian noise, and therefore do not account for potentially meaningful structure in biological variability. Here, we present an extension to the existing BINNs framework that includes a learnable noise model, allowing discovery of the noise model directly from data. Using population growth as an example, we demonstrate that the framework accura

Ancestral Sequences Cannot be Accurately Reconstructed via Interpolation in a Variational Autoencoder's Latent Space.

Standard methods for ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) rely on substitution models for the residues in a biological sequence and assume independent evolution across these sites, ignoring the epistatic interactions that shape molecular evolution. In contrast, deep learning models like variational autoencoders (VAEs) can learn low-dimensional representations ("embeddings") of sequences in a protein family that may implicitly handle these dependencies, raising the possibility of performing more accurate ASR by interpolating between extant sequence embeddings within the VAE's latent space. I

Mathematical Modeling of Systemic Sclerosis and Its Treatment.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease marked by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposited by myofibroblasts. The disease carries the risk of pathologically progressing to internal organs, particularly the lung. Since abnormally large densities of myofibroblasts are associated with SSc, clinical studies consider trials that reduce the density of myofibroblasts: imatinib treatment ( N ), which promotes apoptosis in myofibroblasts, and SSc by fresolimumab ( S ), which inhibits TGF- β , a key growth factor of myofibroblasts. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model of SSc by

Taking into account the influence of climatic factors and age in the mathematical modeling and analysis of the dynamic transmission of malaria.

Malaria is the most widespread and deadly parasitic disease in the world. This disease is transmitted from an infected individual to a healthy individual via the female Anopheles mosquito. Children under the age of 5 are most at risk from this infectious disease. Sub-Saharan Africa is most affected by malaria in the world. The geographical distribution and seasonality of the malaria cases observed are closely related to the climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) that influence its transmission dynamics. To control this disease, the use of insecticide treated nets and education of the

Stochastic Modeling of Viral Reproductive Cycle: Study of Viral and Cell Extinction.

Although viral dynamics is typically modeled using ordinary differential equations, a natural way to address the phenomena of viral persistence and host cell survival is to use stochastic models of viral reproduction. Here we present a study of viral and substrate cell extinction and their dependence on viral production rate for two simple stochastic models of viral reproduction that differ in the method of viral release: one accounts for viral bursting, in which the release of viruses is instantaneous after cell lesion, the other for viral budding, in which new viral particles are released fr

How Residual Fertility Impacts the Efficiency of Crop Pest Control by the Sterile Insect Technique.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control technique based on mass-rearing, radiation-based sterilization that can induce fitness costs, and releases of the pest species targeted for population control. Sterile matings, between females and sterilized males, can reduce the overall population growth rate and cause a fall in population density. However, a proportion of irradiated males may escape sterilization, resulting in what is called residual fertility. Our aim in this study was to examine the impact of residual fertility on pest control employing a modeling approach. We mode

Mathematical modelling of the dynamics of typhoid fever and two modes of treatment in a Health District in Cameroon.

In this paper, we propose a novel mathematical model for indirectly transmitted typhoid fever disease that incorporates the use of modern and traditional medicines as modes of treatment. Theoretically, we provide two Lyapunov functions to prove the global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) and the endemic equilibrium (EE) when the basic reproduction number $ (\mathcal{R}_0) $ is less than one and greater than one, respectively. The model is calibrated using the number of cumulative cases reported in the Penka-Michel health district in Cameroon. The parameter estimates t

Estimating Hidden Cholera Burden and Intervention Effectiveness.

Cholera remains a significant public health threat in many parts of the world, with differing levels of compliance to intervention strategies and undocumented cases contributing to reservoir contamination with Vibrio cholerae at varying rates alongside reported cases. To address this, we incorporate an inapparent cholera-infected compartment into the iSIR model and equip it with parameters depicting vaccination and compliance levels for water and food sanitation, handwashing, and safe fecal disposal. Our model shows that the bacteria shedding from the inapparent infection can significantly aff

Differential contributions of the middle frontal gyrus functional connectivity to literacy and numeracy.

Literacy and numeracy equally affect an individual's success in and beyond schools, but these two competencies tend to be separately examined, particularly in neuroimaging studies. The current resting-state fMRI study examined the neural correlates of literacy and numeracy in the same sample of healthy adults. We first used an exploratory "Multivariate Distance Matrix Regression" (MDMR) approach to examine intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC), highlighting the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) for both competencies. Notably, there was a hemispheric asymmetry in the MDMR-based MFG findings, with li

Normal and pathological dynamics of platelets in humans.

We develop a mathematical model of platelet, megakaryocyte, and thrombopoietin dynamics in humans. We show that there is a single stationary solution that can undergo a Hopf bifurcation, and use this information to investigate both normal and pathological platelet production, specifically cyclic thrombocytopenia. Carefully estimating model parameters from laboratory and clinical data, we then argue that a subset of parameters are involved in the genesis of cyclic thrombocytopenia based on clinical information. We provide model fits to the existing data for both platelet counts and thrombopoiet

Trigonometry-Integrated 'Lift' Technique (TILT) for Restoring Volar Tilt in Distal Radius Fractures: Description of Technique and Preliminary Results.

BACKGROUND: Restoration of extra-articular and intra-articular parameters are important considerations during operative fixation of distal radius fractures. Restoration of volar tilt by using visual estimation and the 'lift' technique has previously been described. The aim of our study was to describe a mathematical technique for accurately restoring the volar tilt of the distal radius to acceptable anatomic values. METHODS: A retrospective review of cases performed using the trigonometry-integrated ' lift' technique (TILT) was performed. This technique uses the pre-operative volar tilt angle
