Standard implant placement in the posterior maxilla is often limited by the lack of vertical bone height due to the pneumatization of the sinus cavity. Several techniques have been developed to enter this cavity and elevate the membrane to enable implant placement. These methods may involve the use of bone grafts and membranes, as well as concurrent implant placement. This article reviews the clinical situations in which to apply these sinus lift techniques, complications, and success rates.

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a well known but poorly understood pathologic entity. It is associated with an unusual growth of fibrotic tissue admixed with varying amounts of inflammation that displaces and compresses normal anatomic structures, resulting in dysfunction. Pseudotumors have been found in multiple locations-the orbit in particular-but to the best of our knowledge, none has previously been reported as an isolated sinus lesion. We describe a case of primary sclerosing fibroinflammatory pseudotumor of the maxillary sinus that manifested as recurrent unilateral maxillary sinusitis in a…

BACKGROUND: Paranasal sinus osteomas are rare benign tumors. Although various theories such as trauma and infection have been proposed, it is difficult to establish the pathogenesis of osteoma. Osteomas may be detected with routine radiographic examination or the tumors may enlarge and cause symptoms. Osteomas most frequently occur in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses, and are rare in the maxillary sinus.
CASE REPORT: In the present study, we report a case of an 18-year-old woman with a maxillary sinus osteoma. Radiographically, the tumor was characterized as a radiopaque, well-delimited lesion…

PURPOSE: The sinus lift procedure requires detailed knowledge of maxillary sinus anatomy and the possible anatomical variations. This study evaluated the location and prevalence of maxillary sinus septa using computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: This study was based on the analysis of CT images for posterior maxilla which were obtained from patients who visited Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital during the period of June 2007 to December 2008. With the exclusion of cases presenting any pathological changes, 236 maxillary sinuses in 204 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The averag…

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is recognized as one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas arising in late adulthood. Most MFHs arise from the extremities and the retroperitoneum, thus the incidence of head and neck MFH is relatively low. Because of its rare incidence, there are very few reports focusing on the imaging features of MFH arising in the maxillary sinus. A case of MFH of the maxillary sinus in a 67-year-old male patient is reported including imaging and pathological features.

Thyroid carcinoma metastatic to the paranasal sinuses is extremely rare. We report a case of follicular thyroid carcinoma metastatic to the right maxillary sinus, with extension into the right side of the hard palate in a young lady. A radioactive iodine-131 (I-131) scan post total thyroidectomy revealed 0.8% uptake in the neck; the whole body scan revealed a functioning metastasis in the region of the right maxillary antrum. Pathological confirmation of metastasis was done by correlating the fine needle aspirate cytology with the thyroidectomy histology. The patient initially received 40 Gy o…

BACKGROUND: The use of a specially designed implant to be anchored in the zygomatic bone has been proposed in the literature as an alternative to bone grafting in the prosthetic rehabilitation of the severely resorbed maxilla, an option that has few postoperative complications. However, some complications can arise, such as the fungal infection the authors describe in this article.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors report a case of aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus after zygomatic implant placement. Twelve months after placement of the implant, the patient returned with symptoms of sinusitis, …

Osteomas are rare, slow-growing, benign bone tumors that preferentially develop in the paranasal sinuses. We report a case of a giant osteoma of the left maxillary sinus in a 29-year-old man which was diagnosed by imaging and endoscopy and treated surgically because of the patient's symptoms and maxillary sinus distortion. Given the large volume and location of the osteoma, resection was performed through an external sublabial approach, according to the Rouge-Denker technique. There were no postoperative complications. There was no sign of recurrence at 5 years follow-up. A review of the liter…

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the maxillary sinus is a very rare neoplasm that shares some characteristics with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been reported to be associated with LEC located outside of the nasopharynx in Asian populations. A case report of a 64-year-old Asian female with right-sided cheek mass which was diagnosed preoperatively as a maxillary mass by paranasal sinus computed tomography scan is presented. Because maxillary sinus cancer with orbital invasion was considered, she underwent surgical removal of a mass. Final pathology revealed LEC, whic…

Maxillary sinus carcinomas are rare malignancies of the face, characterized by high local relapsing rate. Modalities of treatment are without consensus and respective roles of radiation therapy and surgery remain controversial. As those malignancies are often diagnosed at locally advanced stage, radiation therapy may frequently be used for patients having unresectable advanced disease. Nevertheless, surgery remains treatment of choice for more localized malignancies, in association with systematic postoperative radiotherapy. For those patients whose prognosis remains pejorative, it is necessar…

CONCLUSION: The study showed that surgery in the maxillary sinus can affect its development.
OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively evaluate the long-term impact of sinus surgery on its development in the rabbit.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an experimental study performed at an academic tertiary medical center using 20 4-week-old New Zealand white rabbits. The rabbits underwent unilateral right maxillary sinus surgery. The contralateral maxillary sinus used as a control did not undergo the operation. The maxillary sinus ostium was enlarged on the operated side. Volumetric analysis of the maxillary…

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults. The common sites of involvement are the retroperitoneal space and limbs. The occurrence of this tumor in the head and neck is rare. Recent studies have shown that the occurrence of malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the head and neck can follow radiotherapy for the treatment of other tumors. We, herein, report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, which developed 17 years after radiotherapy of a carcinoma in the maxillary sinus.

We report a case of cavernous hemangioma originating in the maxillary sinus. This is an unusual location for hemangioma, and this case also had a rare presentation involving bone erosion. The substantial bone destruction and resultant widening of the right ostiomeatal complex made it difficult to differentiate this cavernous hemangioma from malignant epithelial tumors.

Silent sinus syndrome is a rare clinical condition in which patients present with spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus secondary to collapse of orbital floor due to chronic subclinical maxillary sinusitis. It is postulated that obstruction of the osteomeatal complex lead to negative antrum pressure which causes the maxillary sinus atelectasis.

OBJECTIVE: Organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus is rare. It occurs by organization of the hematoma in an unaerated maxillary sinus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CT features of this lesion.
CONCLUSIONS: Organized hematoma should be included in the differential diagnosis when patients have recurrent epistaxis and an expansile mass in the maxillary sinus.

Oncocytic neoplasms are tumors composed of oncocytes (i.e., epithelial cells with a large cytoplasm that is rich in mitochondria). Most cases are benign and originate from the major salivary glands, while the minor salivary glands are rarely involved. Occurrence of oncocytic carcinoma (or malignant oncocytoma) within the sinonasal tract is an unusual event. We report a rare case of maxillary sinus oncocytic carcinoma occurring in a 45-year-old male. Biopsy was consistent with an unspecified salivary gland neoplasm. The patient underwent total maxillectomy through a lateral rhinotomic approach;…

For chronic maxillary sinusitis, the most popular surgical approach for treatment is endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). After these operations, however, it is not clear how well the surgery restores the normal mucociliary function. We examined the mucociliary clearance (MCC) in maxillary sinuses in chronic sinusitis before ESS and 6 months after the operations. The correlation of histology to MCC was also studied. Measurements of the mean residual mucociliary clearance (MCC) of maxillary sinuses was studied pre- and postoperatively with an isotope method. Biopsies taken during ESS and 6 months po…
