Disrupted maxillofacial, cardiovascular, and nervous development in washc5 knockout Zebrafish: Insights into 3C syndrome.

3C syndrome features craniofacial, nervous, and cardiovascular malformations. WASHC5 gene mutations may underline this syndrome, but the pathogenicity and underlying mechanism remain undetermined. We analyzed the expression pattern of the washc5 gene in zebrafish using whole-body in situ hybridization and generated a zebrafish model with washc5 gene knockout using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Homozygous zebrafish exhibited high mortality, retarded growth, lighter stripes, and reduced pigmentation around the pupils. In the maxillofacial region, homozygotes displayed a shortened and tilted maxilla an

A rare case report of extensive mandibular osteoma corrected by unilateral mandibulectomy: Cytological, radiological, and pathological investigation.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma is a benign bone tumor that rarely affects animals. The most common bones involved with this tumor included the mandible, maxillofacial bones, and nasal sinuses. Definitive diagnosis is based on pathology findings which allow for differentiation with other bone lesions. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, a 5-year-old intact male Mongrel dog presented with a huge mandibular mass that involved both the right and left mandible, and led to dental occlusion. The radiography was performed and depicted the intense mass with a well-demarcated edge, a short transitional zone between no

Incidence and morphology of the incisive suture in CT scanning of young children and human fetuses.

PURPOSE: Incisive suture is a suture classically described on the oral face of the palate in fetuses and young children. The aim of our study was to describe the evolution of the incisive suture in human fetuses and to evaluate the incidence of this suture in a population of young children under 4 years, to determine if there is a possibility of improving the anterior growth of the maxilla, by stimulation of this suture. METHODS: One hundred and thirty CT scan images of patients aged from birth to 48 months have been studied and nine fetal palates aged from 18 to 26 weeks of development, have

Assessment of the maxilla-mandible-nasion angle in normal and aneuploid foetuses in the first trimester of pregnancy.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study aims to determine whether the maxilla-mandible-nasion (MMN) angle can be reliably measured in the first trimester, to describe normal ranges, and to determine if significant changes occur in foetuses with aneuploidies. METHODS: The MMN angle was measured in stored 2D-ultrasound images of 200 normal fetal profiles between 11+0 and 13+6 weeks of gestation. Each image was analyzed by two observers at two independent time points. Bland-Altmann analysis was performed to evaluate the reliability of the measurements. Additionally, the MMN angle was measured on sonog

Roles of FGF8 subfamily in embryogenesis and oral‑maxillofacial diseases (Review).

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are diffusible polypeptides released by a variety of cell types. FGF8 subfamily members regulate embryonic development processes through controlling progenitor cell growth and differentiation, and are also functional in adults in tissue repair to maintain tissue homeostasis. FGF8 family members exhibit unique binding affinities with FGF receptors and tissue distribution patterns. Increasing evidence suggests that, by regulating multiple cellular signaling pathways, alterations in the FGF8 subfamily are involved in craniofacial development, odontogenesis, tongue

The craniofacial complex in 47, XXX females.

A study of the craniofacial complex in four 47, XXX Finnish females, or females with an extra X chromosome, was carried out using cephalometric analysis comprising linear and angular measurements. The lengths of the anterior and posterior cranial bases, the calvarium, mandibular ramus and posterior and upper anterior face heights were found to be significantly shorter than in female controls, while the angles between the foraminal and clival planes, the mandibular plane and cranial base, the maxillary and occlusal planes, the maxillary and mandibular planes and the foraminal and mandibular pla

Efficacy of rhBMP-2 in Cleft Lip and Palate Defects: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of using rhBMP-2 (recombinant human morphogenetic protein-2) in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate defects (CLPD). Seven databases were screened: PubMed (Medline), Lilacs, Ibecs, Web of Science, BBO, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library. Clinical trials that evaluated the use of bioactive treatment with rhBMP-2 in the treatment of patients with CLPD were included. Statistical analyses were performed by comparing the standardized mean difference of bone formation volume and bone filling percentage (p = 0.05). Ten studies compared th

Partial trisomy of the pericentromeric region of chromosome 5 in a girl with binder phenotype.

The patient reported here displayed most characteristic features of Binder syndrome (OMIM: 155050), a rare maxillonasal malformation with unknown etiology. She was sent for genetic evaluation at the age of 10 years because of facial dysmorphism and borderline intellectual disability. Cytogenetic analyses showed a de novo supernumerary small ring chromosome with a pericentromeric region of chromosome 5 in all lymphocytes. Array painting revealed that the marker contains a 20,950-kb genomic region comprising cytogenetic band 5p14.1q11.1. Additionally, 7 reports have been published in the literat

Kocher Debre Semelaigne syndrome and associated orofacial aspects: report of a case.

Myopathy and muscular pseudohypertrophy associated with severe congenital hypothyroidism has been described as Kocher Debre Semelaigne syndrome, which is a rare disorder with only a few previously published reports. However, none of these reports have described the orofacial aspects of this syndrome. Here we report one such case, which may provide valuable information to specialists in oral healthcare regarding the associated orofacial aspects.

Orthognathic treatment and temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review. Part 2. Signs and symptoms and meta-analyses.

INTRODUCTION: There have been conflicting viewpoints in the literature regarding the effects of orthognathic treatment on temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A systematic review was conducted to determine the percentage of orthognathic patients with TMD, establish the range of signs and symptoms, and follow patients longitudinally through treatment for any changes in signs and symptoms. METHODS: Part 1 of this 2-part article described the methodology of this review, with a narrative analysis of the study characteristics and the TMD classification methods. Part 2 describes the percentage of pat

Cranial strains and malocclusion: IV. Torsion.

The cranial strain known as torsion does not fit within the Angle Classification. This strain is described and how to identify it. Torsion may occur as the only strain or is more commonly superimposed on another strain. Recognizing the presence of a torsion has a significant bearing on treatment sequencing. An approach to treatment is demonstrated.

[Bone distraction osteogenesis].

Bone osteogenesis has been used by many surgeons to compensate dissymmetry due to congenital malformations, diseases or traumas. Bone distraction is the process of generating new bone in a gap between two bone segments in response to the application of graduated tensile stress across the bone gap. Different types of distraction are actually proposed to be an alternative to facial osteotomies or bone grafting techniques. Distraction can be unilateral, bilateral and correct the deficiencies in one, two or three dimensions. The advantages of the distraction osteogenesis are the possibilities to o

Surgical-orthodontic correction of adult facial deformities.

The use of combined surgical-orthodontic therapy for the correction of skeletal anomalies has moved from the obscure to the routine over the last 25 years. Its use has been extended to treat not only developmental problems in children and adolescents, but also traumatic and temporomandibular joint-related deformities in adults. Its use can be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan, including prosthodontics, periodontics, and implant dentistry. The advent of rigid internal fixation has made it particularly more appealing for the treatment of adult patients, allowing the patients to retu

Neuroimaging findings in Emanuel Syndrome.

Emanuel syndrome is a rare inherited chromosomal abnormality caused by an unbalanced translocation of chromosomes 11 and 22. Clinically, Emanuel syndrome is characterized by a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies, dysmorphisms, and developmental disability often confused with other similar syndromes. Outside of genetic testing, diagnosis remains challenging and current literature on typical radiologic findings is limited. We present classic neuroimaging findings of Emanuel syndrome consistent with prior literature including microcephaly, microretrognathia, external auditory canal stenosis, an
