PURPOSE: We recently demonstrated the morphology of the anococcygeal ligament. As the anococcygeal ligament and raphe are often confused, the concept of the anococcygeal raphe needs to be re-examined from the perspective of fetal development, as well as in terms of adult morphology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined the horizontal sections of 15 fetuses as well as adult histology. From cadavers, we obtained an almost cubic tissue mass containing the dorsal wall of the anorectum, the coccyx and the covering skin. Most sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or Masson-trichrome soluti

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary sequestration (PS) is a rare pulmonary congenital malformation characterized by disconnection with the tracheobronchial tree or the pulmonary arterial blood supply thus impeding the connection to the arterial blood supply from systemic circulation, ultimately resulting in a non-functional lung.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-day-old boy with rhabdomyomatoid hyperplasia was hospitalized for cough and fever 2 months after birth.
DIAGNOSES: Routine B-ultrasound revealed a cystic malformation in the right lung. CT showed increased volume of the right lung accompanied with cystic

Smooth muscle is fundamental to life, as its function underpins circulation, nutrition, and reproduction. However, in contrast to striated muscle, the arrangement of its contractile filaments, composed of myosin and actin, is not readily apparent by light microscopy and, even electron microscopy fails to reveal an obviously ordered structural organisation. The aim of this review is to bring together classic ultrastructural data with more recent immunofluorescent analyses to develop a model how the protoplasma of a smooth muscle cell might be organised.

The minimum and maximum indicators of the length, width, area or volume of organs and structures in the lower urinary tract can normally vary up to 2-3 times. With age, at healthy women the absolute and relative length of the urethra, the urethrovesical angle, and the inclination of the urethra do not change. Both smooth and striated muscle tissues, which are part of various departments of the female urethra, undergo atrophy during the aging process. Smooth muscle tissue is less variable with age, but striated muscle symplasts are sometimes completely absent in urethral biopsies from elderly p

Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered the major contributor to skeletal muscle wasting in different conditions. Genetically determined neuromuscular disorders occur as a result of mutations in the structural proteins of striated muscle cells and therefore are often combined with cardiac phenotype, which most often manifests as a cardiomyopathy. The specific roles played by mitochondria and mitochondrial energetic metabolism in skeletal muscle under muscle-wasting conditions in cardiomyopathies have not yet been investigated in detail, and this aspect of genetic muscle diseases remains poorly

Pyomyositis is a bacterial infection of striated muscle, usually located to muscles in the extremities or pelvis. We present a microbiologically unique case report of pyomyositis in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (the first of its kind in Denmark) caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. capitis and possibly Streptococcus pneumoniae. Pyomyositis is very rare but can lead to critical complications such as endocarditis and sepsis. It is therefore important to know the condition when evaluating an infected patient with muscle pain. Treatment consists of antibiotics and - if relevant - surgical ab

Popeye domain containing protein 1 (POPDC1) is a highly conserved transmembrane protein essential for striated muscle function and homeostasis. Pathogenic variants in the gene encoding POPDC1 (BVES, Blood vessel epicardial substance) are causative for limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMDR25), associated with cardiac arrhythmia. We report on four affected children (age 7-19 years) from two consanguineous families with two novel pathogenic variants in BVES c.457C>T(p.Q153X) and c.578T>G (p.I193S). Detailed analyses were performed on muscle biopsies from an affected patient of each family includi

AIM: Changes in structural support of the urethra and bladder neck have been proposed to be among the most important factors in the pathogenesis of stress urinary incontinence. In this context, we histologically investigated the paraurethral area in continent women to quantify the relative distribution of connective tissue, smooth muscle, vessels, nerves, and striated muscle. Previously published literature gives only descriptive evaluations of the relative distribution of these tissue components.
METHODS: We used a computerised morphometric method, which allowed us to estimate the paraurethr

Transrectal sonography of the urethra was used in 14 asymptomatic volunteers, 37 women with frequency-urgency syndrome, 42 patients with mild stress urinary incontinence, and 18 with severe stress urinary incontinence. Transverse scanning over the midurethra was performed and cross-sectional images of the urethral and paraurethral structures were compared among the four groups, with P < 0.05 being considered statistically significant. The total cross-sectional area of the midurethra was significantly smaller in patients with stress urinary incontinence than in those without this disorder (86.7

Electromicroscopial changes were observed in arterioles, nerves, and striated skeleton muscle cells in a case of clinically and histologically definite polyarteritis nodosa with polyneuropathy. Inflammatory infiltrates were found in and around arteriolar walls; motor nerves were partly demarkated and presynaptic motor endplates were degenerated. The myofibrills of skeleton muscle cells showed a disorganization that is regarded as the morphological substrate for the clinically observed muscular weakness in this case.

Smooth muscle cells are widespread in the human body, found in a range of tissues from the vasculature to the gut, airways, bladder and so on. They can be found as isolated cells or organised into syncytia (groups of cells). The organisation of the contractile cytoskeleton (smooth muscle actin and myosin filaments) is less well understood than that of striated (cardiac and skeletal) muscle. This review aims to explore what is known, the potential effects of mutations in smooth muscle actin, myosin and tropomyosin and how they lead to disease, and to highlight what we have still to learn about

Noradrenergic nerves have been demonstrated amongst the ganglion cells of the vesical plexus and of the bladder. Trigonal smooth muscle receives a supply of noradrenergic fibres although similar nerves are rarely observed in relation to the smooth muscle of the detrusor. In the male numerous noradrenergic nerves occur in the walls of the bladder neck, prostate, seminal vesicles and vas deferens; nerves of this type are scarce in the smooth muscle coat of the female bladder neck and urethra. The striated muscle of the rhabdosphincter in both sexes receives a scant (but significant) supply of no

The differentiating potency of pineal cells from 8-day quail embryos was studied with cell culture. It was found that the differentiation of striated muscle fibres occurred abundantly in the pineal cells cultured in hypertonic culture conditions. Muscle nature of these fibres was confirmed by utilizing the antiserum against the striated muscle type creatine kinase (MM-CK). When CO2, NAHCO3, NaCl, KCl and MgCl2 were added in hypertonic concentrations, extensive myogenesis occurred in cultured pineal cells. Myogenesis in pineal cultures began as early as 2 days and, after 3 days in the medium wi

Iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, is responsible for physical fatigue. This effect may be linked to an alteration of mitochondrial metabolism. Our aim was to assess the impact of ID on skeletal striated muscle mitochondrial metabolism. Iron-deficient non-anemic mice, obtained using a bloodletting followed by a low-iron diet for three weeks, were compared to control mice. Endurance was assessed using a one-hour submaximal exercise on a Rotarod device and activities of mitochondrial complexes I and IV were measured by spectrophotometry on two types of skeletal striated muscles, the s

The anatomic structures that prevent stress incontinence, urinary incontinence during elevations in abdominal pressure, can be divided into 2 systems: a sphincteric system and a supportive system. The action of the vesical neck and urethral sphincteric mechanisms at rest constrict the urethral lumen and keep urethral closure pressure higher than bladder pressure. The striated urogenital sphincter, the smooth muscle sphincter in the vesical neck, and the circular and longitudinal smooth muscle of the urethra all contribute to closure pressure. The mucosal and vascular tissues that surround the

BACKGROUND: The surgical options for the treatment of anal incontinence where standard procedures have failed include transposition of striated muscles, primarily gracilis and gluteus maximus, and implantation of artificial sphincters. Due to a high proportion of fatigue-prone fibres in striated muscles, the results of transposition without stimulation have been disappointing. This study presents the results of stimulated graciloplasty in 13 patients with severe anal incontinence in whom other surgical procedures had failed.
METHODS: The gracilis muscle was transposed around the anal canal ac

Fourteen fibroadenomas of the human breast were examined by light and electron microscopy, and by immunohistochemistry for actin. They were classified into 3 groups according to their stromal patterns; myxoid, fibrous-cellular and sclerotic. Actin immunohistochemistry revealed that the stromal areas were strongly positive in the fibrous-cellular group and weakly positive in the myxoid and sclerotic groups. By electron microscopy the stromal cells in most cases of the myxoid and fibrous-cellular groups were fibroblasts, containing varying amounts of microfilaments, 5-7 nm in diameter (actin typ

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the pig is a suitable model for studies of lower urinary tract function and dysfunction, we sought to determine the morphology of the female pig bladder neck and urethra. Computer assisted 3-dimensional (D) reconstructions from step serial histological sections were used for visualization of the spatial relationships between neighboring urethral wall components, and the quantification of these components in the bladder neck and along the urethra.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Step serial histological paraffin sections from the bladder neck and urethra of 6 female pigs

Integrins are heterodimeric cell-surface receptors that link the extracellular matrix and the intracellular cytoskeleton and function as mechanotransducers. Signaling through integrins is important for cell growth, migration, and survival. Extracellular matrix is altered in the myocardium during hypertrophic induction and the transition to heart failure. The role of integrins in this process is poorly understood. Recently, integrin subunits have been identified that are dominantly expressed in striated muscle. We tested the hypothesis that since integrins are mechanotransducers, their expressi
