We report the cytogenetic analysis of a medulloepithelioma, a rare neuroectodermally-derived tumor of childhood, which to our knowledge is the first reported karyotype of this tumor. The tumor sample was received at diagnosis and was mechanically dissociated to create cell suspension cultures. The primary cytogenetic abnormality was a der(16)t(1;16) chromosome, which was typical of that reported in a wide range of other tumor types. The other abnormalities seen were a del(6q) and monosomy 15.

Onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) after the age of 50 years is rare, and should alert the physician to possible "organic" causes of OCD. These include infections, degenerative disorders, brain injury and cerebrovascular lesions, principally involving the frontal lobes and basal ganglia. The current patient had obsessive images, anxiety, auditory hallucinations and seizures following (possible) gliomatosis cerebri, with onset around 69 years of age. The atypical presentation, lesions involving the cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical circuit and the association with neurological

OBJECTIVE: Intraparenchymal schwannomas are a rare subtype of central nervous system tumor, with descriptions of this pathology within the neurosurgical literature exclusively consisting of case reports and small case series. The present study details an illustrative case of a young patient with this rare tumor type who was recently treated at our institution via craniotomy for resection of her intracranial neoplasm. We then conducted a systematic review of the published patient data on supratentorial intraparenchymal schwannomas, including a meta-analysis aimed at quantifying postoperative se

Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) include primary tumors - itraaxial, growing from brain and spinal cord cells (neuroepithelial tumors) or extraaxial, growing from surrounding structures (brain and spinal cord, nerve sheaths, vascular structures, lymphatic tissue, germ cells, malformations, pituitary glands). Much more often they are located in the intracranial space a solitary or multiple metastatic spread of malignancy originating from another organ (eg lung, breast, malignant melanoma, Grawitzs tumor). The occurrence of metastases of solid tumors is then in the intraaxial or extraa

Differentiating chronic aseptic meningitis from leptomeningeal carcinomatosis or gliomatosis can be difficult, particularly when the differentiation is based solely on routine cytologic examination. The diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid tumor dissemination in at-risk patients requires cytologic examination of cerebrospinal fluid and radiography of the leptomeninges. Routine cytologic examination alone has proven less than desirable, in most instances providing confirmation in as little as 50% of cases in the first lumbar puncture. This percentage increases to 85% to 90% after multiple lumbar pu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In 2007, the WHO classification of brain tumors was extended by three new entities of glioneuronal tumors: papillary glioneuronal tumor (PGNT), rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor of the fourth ventricle (RGNT) and glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands (GNTNI). Focusing on clinical characteristics and outcome, the authors performed a comprehensive individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis of the cases reported in literature until December 2012.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed articles reporting on PGNT, RGNT, and GNTN

Sixty-four children, aged 0-17 years, undergoing ambulatory electroencephalography (EEG) were prospectively recruited during a 12-month period. The diagnostic yield of ambulatory electroencephalography was determined for each of the following groups: group 1: differentiation of seizures from nonepileptic events; group 2: determination of seizure/interictal discharge frequency; and group 3: classification of seizure type or localization. The ambulatory electroencephalography answered the clinical question in 61% of group 1 (27/44) and 100% of groups 2 (16/16) and 3 (4/4). Of 44 cases in Group 1

Pediatric patients with brain tumors can loose 1 SD of height prior to beginning growth hormone (GH) therapy. The objectives of this study were to characterize the early growth failure, identify contributing factors and propose interventions. Five children were followed quarterly for 2 years to monitor auxological parameters, nutritional indices, and endocrine measuremnts. GH stimulation tests were done every 6 months to determine the timing of the onset of GH deficiency. The nadir for height velocity (HV) occurred 6 months after diagnosis. Poor gains in height correlated with decreased calori

Expression of the mouse GH-releasing hormone (GRH) gene is restricted to neurons within the hypothalamus and to placenta. In an attempt to generate immortalized mouse hypothalamic neurons expressing GRH, the proximal 872-nucleotide segment of the 5'-flanking region of the hypothalamic mouse GRH gene was cloned by polymerase chain reaction and ligated to a 2.7-kilobase DNA sequence encoding the simian virus-40 (SV40) T-antigen, so that regulation of SV40 T-antigen expression was dependent on sequences within the mGRH 5'-flanking region. This region contains both TATA and CAAT boxes. The mouse G

The independent risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) were investigated in patients with neuroepithelial tumor to establish a risk score for VTE. Our prospective study enrolled 395 hospitalized cases with neuroepithelial tumors. All cases underwent measurement of serum D-dimer concentration and neurological examination on admission. Serum D-dimer concentration was measured on days 1, 3, and 7 after surgery and weekly during follow up in patients who underwent surgery, and once a week during follow up in patients without surgery. Fourteen clinical parameters were evaluated as indicators

OBJECTIVES: Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) are commonly associated with medically resistant epilepsy that usually starts in childhood. Presurgical workup and surgical strategies remain controversial. The authors present a study of long-term seizure outcome after noninvasive presurgical investigations and different surgical strategies were used in a series of pediatric patients.
METHODS: Twenty-four children who underwent operations at a single center between 1986 and 2006 were eligible for this retrospective study. The authors reviewed medical records including sex, age at sei

The neuroepithelial tumor, PATZ1-fused (NET-PATZ1), has been recently isolated as a distinct methylation class by DNA-methylation profiling and is characterized by recurrent PATZ1 fusions, in association with the EWSR1 or MN1 genes and a chromosome 22 chromothripsis. The clinical phenotype is mainly pediatric and features circumscribed supratentorial tumors. However, the histopathology is vastly heterogeneous (glial, glioneuronal, sarcomatous, multiphenotypic) and a cell of origin has not yet been identified, explaining the previsionary imprecise terminology of "NET". Moreover, extra-central n

BACKGROUND: Semaphorin 4F (S4F) has roles in embryologic axon guidance and is expressed in adults. S4F is involved in cancer-induced neurogenesis.
METHODS: Prostate cells were transfected with S4F retrovirus. Cells and controls were used for a bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) incorporation assay (proliferation) and in vitro scratch and Matrigel Transwell chamber invasion assay (migration). Monoclonal antibodies were developed using baculovirus-expressed recombinant GST-S4F and used to immunostain tissue microarrays. Slides were imaged using deconvolution and analyzed using tissue segmentation. Data

INTRODUCTION: Data support use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for safe and effective resection of paraspinal masses in children. Our aim was to describe outcomes following this operation using a novel technique and to compare its use with that of other established techniques.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all children (<18 years old) undergoing thoracoscopic resection of paraspinal masses in 2000-2011. Demographics, operative details, and clinical outcomes were summarized and compared between those undergoing resection using a Harmonic (Eth

Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumors of the cerebrum (MVNT) are superficial neuronal tumors in adults that were first documented in 2013. Herein, we report a case of MNVT involving a 37-year-old man who presented with an epileptogenic, superficial solid lesion in the left parietal lobe. Histomorphology of the resected specimen was characterized by nodular lesions with vacuolation. Nodules comprised irregular proliferation of neuronal cells, which ranged from ganglion-like forms to those with indistinct lineage. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the lesional cells stained positiv

The peritoneum is a unique serosal membrane, which can be the site of primary tumors and, more commonly, secondary pathologic processes. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common malignant condition to affect the peritoneal cavity, and the radiologist plays an important role in making the diagnosis and assessing the extent of disease, especially in sites that may hinder surgery. In this review, we address the role of the radiologist in the setting of peritoneal pathology, focusing on peritoneal carcinomatosis as this is the predominant malignant process, followed by revising typical imaging

PURPOSE: The molecular basis of drug resistance in epilepsy is being explored. Two proteins associated with drug resistance in cancer, P-glycoprotein and multidrug resistance-associated protein 1, are upregulated in human epileptogenic pathologies. Other proteins associated with resistance in cancer include major vault protein (MVP) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). We hypothesized that these proteins would also be upregulated in human epileptogenic pathologies.
METHODS: Hippocampal sclerosis (HS), focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) wer
