Inspiratory facilitatory and inhibitory vagal influences during apnoea in rabbits.

During hyperventilation apnoea in vagotomized, anaesthetized rabbits, paralyzed and artificially ventilated, the effects of electrical afferent stimulation of the vagus nerve on the provocation and inhibition of inspiratory activity were investigated. The experiments were repeated using hyperinflation or short-lasting inflation in nonvagotomized animals. It was found that the possibility of observing inspiratory facilitatory phenomena depended on the interrelationship between the frequency of impulses transmitted separately through the thick and thin myelinated fibres. The time constants of ce

The central origin of efferent pathways in the carotid sinus nerve of the cat.

The application of horseradish peroxidase to the central cut end of the carotid sinus nerve of the cat produced retrograde labeling of neurons in the ipsilateral medulla in the region of the nucleus ambiguus at anterior-posterior coordinates -8 to -10.5. These data coupled with previous electrophysiological observations suggest that the nucleus ambiguus may be the origin of an efferent inhibitory pathway to the carotid body.

Efferent unmasking of speech-in-noise encoding?

OBJECTIVE: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex provides efferent feedback from the brainstem to cochlear outer hair cells. Physiologic studies have demonstrated that the MOC reflex is involved in "unmasking" of signals-in-noise at the level of the auditory nerve; however, its functional importance in human hearing remains unclear. DESIGN: This study examined relationships between pre-neural measurements of MOC reflex strength (click-evoked otoacoustic emission inhibition; CEOAE) and neural measurements of speech-in-noise encoding (speech frequency following response; sFFR) in four condition

Pharmacologically altered androgens, brain activation and response inhibition in a stop-signal task in male heavy drinkers.

UNLABELLED: Heavy episodic drinking (HED) is highly prevalent in men and a major risk factor for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Previous studies indicated an influence of testosterone (T) on AUD, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) was linked to alcohol consumption, impulsivity, and response inhibition. As the role of androgens in AUD and the modulation thereof is not fully understood, this study investigated the effect of a pharmacological reduction in DHT by inhibition of the 5-alpha reductase II with finasteride on brain activation and response inhibition during a stop signal task. Fifty males with

Fueling Brain Inhibition: Integrating GABAergic Neurotransmission and Energy Metabolism.

Despite decades of research in brain energy metabolism and to what extent different cell types utilize distinct substrates for their energy metabolism, this topic remains a vibrant area of neuroscience research. In this review, we focus on the substrates utilized by the inhibitory GABAergic neurons, which has been less explored than glutamatergic neurons. First, we discuss how GABAergic neurons may utilize both glucose, lactate, or ketone bodies under different functional conditions, and provide some preliminary data suggesting that unlike glutamatergic neurons, GABAergic neurons work well whe

Corticomotor Control of Lumbar Erector Spinae in Postural and Voluntary Tasks: The Influence of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Current Direction.

Lumbar erector spinae (LES) contribute to spine postural and voluntary control. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) preferentially depolarizes different neural circuits depending on the direction of electrical currents evoked in the brain. Posteroanterior current (PA-TMS) and anteroposterior (AP-TMS) current would, respectively, depolarize neurons in the primary motor cortex (M1) and the premotor cortex. These regions may contribute differently to LES control. This study examined whether responses evoked by PA- and AP-TMS are different during the preparation and execution of LES voluntary

Electrophysiological correlates of divergent projections in the avian superior olivary nucleus.

The physiological diversity of inhibitory neurons provides ample opportunity to influence a wide range of computational roles through their varied activity patterns, especially via feedback loops. In the avian auditory brain stem, inhibition originates primarily from the superior olivary nucleus (SON), and so it is critical to understand the intrinsic physiological properties and processing capabilities of these neurons. Neurons in the SON receive ascending input via the cochlear nuclei: directly from the intensity-coding cochlear nucleus angularis (NA) and indirectly via the interaural timing

Cerebellar Brain Inhibition Is Associated With the Severity of Cervical Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Cerebellar connectivity is thought to be abnormal in cervical dystonia (CD) and other dystonia subtypes, based on evidence from imaging studies and animal work. The authors investigated whether transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced cerebellar brain inhibition (CBI), a measure of cerebellar efficiency at inhibiting motor outflow, is abnormal in patients with CD and/or is associated with clinical features of CD. Because of methodological heterogeneity in CBI reporting, the authors deployed additional controls to reduce potential sources of variability in this study. METHODS: Cerebe

Modulation of reciprocal inhibition at the wrist as a neurophysiological correlate of tremor suppression: a pilot healthy subject study.

It has been shown that Ia afferents inhibit muscle activity of the ipsilateral antagonist, a mechanism known as reciprocal inhibition. Stimulation of these afferents may be explored for the therapeutic reduction of pathological tremor (Essential Tremor or due Parkinson's Disease, for example). However, only a few studies have investigated reciprocal inhibition of wrist flexor / extensor motor control. The main goal of this study was to characterize reciprocal inhibition of wrist flexors / extensors by applying surface electrical stimulation to the radial and median nerves, respectively. Firstl

An acute session of roller massage prolongs voluntary torque development and diminishes evoked pain.

INTRODUCTION: Roller massage (RM) has been reported to reduce pain associated with exercise-induced muscle soreness and increase range of motion without force or activation impairments. The objective was to examine RM effects on evoked pain and contractile properties. METHODS: Twelve men received three sets of 30-s RM at a perceived discomfort level of 7/10 on a visual analogue scale on the ipsilateral (IPSI-R) stimulated plantar flexors (PF), contralateral PF (CONTRA-R), Sham (light rolling on stimulated PF), or Control. At pre-test, post-test, and 5-min post-test, they received evoked maxim

Releasing dentate nucleus cells from Purkinje cell inhibition generates output from the cerebrocerebellum.

The cerebellum generates its vast amount of output to the cerebral cortex through the dentate nucleus (DN) that is essential for precise limb movements in primates. Nuclear cells in DN generate burst activity prior to limb movement, and inactivation of DN results in cerebellar ataxia. The question is how DN cells become active under intensive inhibitory drive from Purkinje cells (PCs). There are two excitatory inputs to DN, mossy fiber and climbing fiber collaterals, but neither of them appears to have sufficient strength for generation of burst activity in DN. Therefore, we can assume two pos

A secondary reflex suppression phase is present in genioglossus but not tensor palatini in response to negative upper airway pressure.

On the basis of recent reports, the genioglossus (GG) negative-pressure reflex consists initially of excitation followed by a secondary state-dependent suppression phase. The mechanistic origin and functional role of GG suppression is unknown but has been hypothesized to arise from transient inhibition of respiratory active neurons as a protective reflex to prevent aspiration, as observed in other respiratory muscles (e.g., diaphragm) during airway occlusion. Unlike GG, tensor palatini (TP) is a tonic muscle with minimal respiratory phasic activation during relaxed breathing, although both mus

Glucose-induced inhibition: how many ionic mechanisms?

Sensing of sugar by specialized 'glucose-inhibited' cells helps organisms to counteract swings in their internal energy levels. Evidence from several cell types in both vertebrates and invertebrates suggests that this process involves sugar-induced stimulation of plasma membrane K(+) currents. However, the molecular composition and the mechanism of activation of the underlying channel(s) remain controversial. In mouse hypothalamic neurones and neurosecretory cells of the crab Cancer borealis, glucose stimulates K(+) currents displaying leak-like properties. Yet knockout of some of the candidat

The effect of hyperventilation on motor cortical inhibition in humans: a study of the electromyographic silent period evoked by transcranial brain stimulation.

We studied the effects of hyperventilation under control of the end-tidal PCO2, on the electromyographic silent period evoked by transcranial magnetic brain stimulation and by peripheral nerve stimulation. We also studied the effects of hyperventilation on the threshold, latency and amplitude of motor potentials. Hyperventilation significantly reduced the duration of the cortical silent period, but did not affect the length of the peripheral silent period. Neither did it alter the latency, amplitude or threshold of the motor potentials. These findings suggest that hyperventilation selectively

Acetylcholine-induced hyperpolarization in identified neurones of the African giant snail (Achatina fulica Férussac).

Three types of hyperpolarization in response to applied acetylcholine (ACh) were observed in 4 identified neurones (RP1, RP2, RP3 and RP4) in the right parietal ganglion of the African giant snail, Achatina fulica Férussac. In order to clarify the ionic mechanisms of these responses, the neurones were voltage-clamped using two microelectrodes and the reversal potential of the ACh-induced currents was measured under several external ionic environments. Experiments revealed the existence of two different ACh-induced currents (Cl- and K+). It was concluded that the 3 types of hyperpolarizing resp

Non-fusable stimuli and the role of binocular inhibition in normal and pathologic vision, especially strabismus.

Stimuli on corresponding points of both retinae that cannot be fused may cause binocular rivalry: the stimuli suppress each other alternately. This effect was used to study the influence of image sharpness upon binocular inhibition. Blurring an image means decreasing its contrast and attenuating its high spatial frequencies. Both factors diminish the time that a stimulus is perceived during rivalry. This fact has implications both for normal vision--as objects off the horopter are normally blurred--and for disturbed vision when the image of one or both eyes is (locally) deteriorated. In both c

Modulation of ipsi- and contralateral reflex responses in unrestrained walking cats.

1. The modulation of reflex responses in up to 10 simultaneously recorded hindlimb muscles was studied in unrestrained cats walking on a treadmill. Single electrical shocks of various strengths were applied to different skin areas of teh hindlimb at different times of the step cycle while the resulting EMG responses were sampled and analyzed. 2. Two excitatory response peaks (P1 and P2) at a latency of about 10 and 25 ms, respectively, were seen in all flexors examined (sartorius, semitendinosus, tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus). Stimulation of most skin areas was effective but re

Reflex responses of gamma motoneurones to vibration of the muscle they innervate.

1. High frequency vibration was applied to the tendon of the non-contracting triceps surae muscle while recording the background discharges of single gamma fibres only small nerve bundles were cut, leaving most of the nerve supply to the triceps intact. 2. 22% out of a total of sixty-three gamma efferents were tonically inhibited by vibration. The inhibition appeared between 25 and 50mum peak-to-peak amplitude of vibration and increased to a plateau for amplitudes of about 100mum. The dependence of the tonic vibration reflex of alpha-efferents on the amplitude of vibration was found to be simi
