Home enteral nutrition does not decrease oral feeding in children during the first year of nutritional support.

BACKGROUND: Enteral nutrition is necessary when nutritional status is poor and oral intake is insufficient or impossible. Although it has been suspected to reduce spontaneous oral feeding, no study has formally assessed the influence of enteral nutrition on pediatric oral intake. The present study aimed to evaluate variation in oral feeding intake after enteral nutrition initiation, and to identify factors influencing oral feeding. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 149 pediatric patients from two French tertiary care hospitals, who received home enteral nutrition from 2009 to

Metabolic plasticity supports a flexible nutritional symbiosis in Cardiocondyla ants.

Nutritional symbioses have repeatedly evolved in insects, yet how hosts regulate these partnerships to balance benefits across development and environments remains unclear. Ants provide an exceptional system to address this question, as several lineages maintain ancient symbionts that can be naturally lost without harming the host. The invasive tramp ant Cardiocondyla obscurior provides a compelling example of this phenomenon, as the vertically transmitted symbiont Candidatus Westeberhardia cardiocondylae can be lost at the species, colony, and even individual level. By implementing a range of

Functional nutrition: a non-pharmacological approach to supporting cognitive Health.

This study presents evidence that functional nutrition serves as a nonpharmacological method for supporting cognitive health. Specific nutrients and dietary patterns known for their supportive effects on cognitive ability and neuroprotection, such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants (vitamins C and E), polyphenols, magnesium, B vitamins, and flavonoid-rich foods, are proposed. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a functional nutrition protocol enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, B vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols as a non-pharmacological strategy for maintaining cognit

Hemodynamic-Guided Nutrition Support in Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at high risk of malnutrition, feeding difficulties and altered body composition beyond infancy. Nutritional decisions are often based on cardiac anatomy. Although anatomy alone does not capture differences in metabolic demand, mesenteric perfusion and feeding intolerance. This review presents physiology-based framework to guide nutritional support in pediatric CHD care pathway. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence favors early enteral feeding when hemodynamically appropriate, prioritizing human milk in high-risk infants, standard…

Levodopa and nutrition support: A case report of Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome.

Levodopa is competitively inhibited by amino acids for absorption across the intestinal wall and blood-brain barrier. An acute withdrawal of levodopa increases the risk of Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome, a life-threatening condition characterized by muscular rigidity, mental status changes, hyperthermia, and autonomic instability. This report discusses the case of a patient with Parkinson's disease who was critically ill who developed Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome while receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition support. Clinicians should be aware of this potential drug-nutrient inter

Immunosuppression in solid organ-transplant recipients and impact on nutrition support.

A key component to nutrition support is to consider immunosuppressive agents, the interaction with nutrients, and how the side effects of the medications influence nutrition support. The immunosuppression of the solid organ-transplant recipient involves the individualized titration of multiple therapeutic agents to prevent allorecognition and, thus, rejection of the transplanted organ. Induction immunosuppression includes the agents used at the time of transplant to prevent early rejection. Maintenance immunosuppression typically consists of oral medications taken for life. Regular therapeutic

Does nutrition support have a role in managing cancer cachexia?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cachexia is a negative prognostic factor in cancer patients. The pathogenesis is related to a variable combination of reduced food intake and metabolic changes. However, whether nutritional support may contribute to effectively prevent and treat cachexia remains a debated issue. RECENT FINDINGS: Consistent evidence demonstrates that anabolic windows of opportunity occur during the clinical trajectory of cancer patients. Also, the use of specific nutrients, namely omega-3 fatty acids, may enhance the efficacy of nutritional support when tumor-driven inflammatory response is …

Nutrition assessment and support in children with end-stage liver disease.

Malnutrition is a treatable complication in children with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). Biliary atresia and other cholestatic disorders are the most frequent cause of ESLD in children. No single variable provides adequate information about nutrition status, yet effective nutrition support is the one intervention known to improve pre- and posttransplant outcomes. A proactive approach consisting of screening anthropometry interpreted using appropriate growth references, recognition of clinical manifestations associated with micronutrient deficiency, and timely aggressive nutrition support is o
