Impact of Surface Passivation on the Efficiency and High-Speed Modulation of III-V GaAs/AlGaAs Nanopillar Array LEDs.

III-V semiconductor nanolight sources with deep-subwavelength dimensions (≪1 μm) are essential for miniaturized photonic devices such as nanoLEDs and nanolasers. However, these nanoscale emitters typically suffer from substantial nonradiative recombination at room temperature, resulting in low efficiency and ultrashort lifetimes (<100 ps). Previous works have predominantly studied surface passivation of nanoLEDs under optical pumping conditions, while practical applications require electrically driven nanoLEDs. Here, we investigate the influence of surface passivation on the efficiency and hig

The optical performance of a 3D printed, titanium dioxide painted, Ganzfeld bowl.

The emergence of three dimensional (3D) printing has inspired creative ways to enable clinicians to make their own medical devices at low cost, a process called distributed manufacture. Devices for light stimulation, such as for visual electrophysiology or pupillometry, require both physical and optical properties. Here we tested whether a 3D printed (fused deposition modelling, FDM) poly-lactic acid (PLA) surface can exhibit Lambertian reflectance, and tested the behaviour of a 3D printed Ganzfeld bowl as an integrating sphere. White PLA transmits light, so a painted inside surface was necess

Development of a statistically standardized optical digital wrist model through integrated MRI-diffuse optical imaging methodology.

SIGNIFICANCE: Current optical health-sensing devices rely on simplified homogeneous tissue models or semi-empirical ratiometric methods, which inadequately address anatomical complexity and inter-individual optical variability. This introduces systematic errors in light propagation modeling, compromising measurement accuracy and clinical robustness, necessitating organ-specific optical models for reliable physiological sensing. AIM: To develop a standard optical digital wrist (DW) model by integrating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffuse optical imaging (DOI), enabling anatomically ac

Development of a microfabricated device for low-voltage electropermeabilization of adherent cells.

A microfabricated device for low-voltage electropermeabilization of adherent cells has been developed. The device, which is fabricated on a cover glass using mainly transparent materials, allows optical observation of cells through it. This device consists of an array of 6-μm circular electrodes connected via a transparent and conductive layer made of ITO (indium tin oxide) to give pulsed voltages for electropermeabilization. The surface of the electrode is coated with a thin Au film to reduce impedance. The insulation layer contains holes aligned on the electrodes to constrict the electric fi

Broadband and Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation in Metallic 3R-TaS2.

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) serves as a fundamental mechanism for frequency conversion and light manipulation in photonic devices, as well as a powerful probe for exploring nonlinear optical properties in 2D materials. However, in metallic 2D systems, strong free-carrier absorption and shallow optical penetration depth usually suppress the nonlinear response. Realizing pronounced SHG in such highly absorptive materials thus remains a major challenge in nonlinear photonics. In this work, we systematically investigate the SHG response of non-centrosymmetric metallic 3R-TaS2 and demonstrate

Dual quasi-BIC enhanced by a metasurface for simultaneous tunable nonreciprocity and low-threshold optical bistability.

The nonlinear optical effect is an indispensable theoretical cornerstone and technological source of photonics, leading the development of nonlinear photonic devices towards higher integration, stronger functionality, and wider application scenarios. However, achieving high-efficiency non-reciprocal transmission, low-threshold optical bistability, and flexible controllability within compact micro-nano structures remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a symmetry-broken silicon-grating metasurface aimed at realizing dual quasi-bound states in the continuum (Q-BICs) near the optical com

Free-Space Skyrmions Radiated from a Geometric Phase Aperture.

The topological properties of optical spin skyrmions provide an additional degree of freedom for data encoding in photonic networks. Although optical spin skyrmions can be realized at subwavelength scales by surface plasmonics, they fail to radiate into free space as information carriers due to spatial confinement to metal-dielectric interfaces. To date, free-space radiative spin skyrmions have relied on cascaded, bulky optical elements. Here, we report a direct approach to generating free-space optical spin skyrmions using a single surface plasmonic device named a plasmonic geometric phase ap

Simultaneous optical and electrochemical label-free biosensing with ITO-coated lossy-mode resonance sensor.

In this work we discuss a new label-free biosensing device based on indium tin oxide (ITO) overlaid section of a multimode optical fiber fused silica core. The sensor has been used to optical measurements also simultaneously interrogated electrochemically (EC). Due to optimized thickness and optical properties of ITO film, a lossy-mode resonance (LMR) could be observed in the optical domain, where electrical properties of the film allowed for application of the sensor as a working electrode in an EC setup. It has been confirmed that the LMR response depends on optical properties of the externa

All-optical hybrid active-passive waveguide selective mode converter.

Waveguide-structured mode converters are essential in integrated photonics for multidimensional optical control, directly impacting the capacity and reliability of optical communication, interconnects, and mode-division multiplexing. Passive designs achieve fixed mode conversion by tailoring waveguide geometry and refractive index profile; while active control expand the flexibility through external stimuli that modulate waveguide properties for mode conversion. However, most devices confine mode conversion to the adjustment of intensity distribution under a single polarization state and lack

Real-time optical fiber sensors based on light diffusing microlens arrays.

The applications of optical fibers are impeded in implantable medical diagnostics due to incompatibility with biological tissues, and immune reaction in vivo. The utilization of biocompatible materials to construct a photonic sensing platform can reduce the immune response in in vivo medical diagnostics. Here, we developed real-time optical fiber sensors to determine the volumetric modulation of stimuli-responsive polymers. Asymmetric microlens structures were replicated on stimuli-sensitive hydrogels as stand-alone sensors and were chemically attached to the tips of silica and biocompatible o

Quantification of histological changes after calibrated crush of the intraorbital optic nerve in rats.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic optic nerve lesions (TONL) are probable but unpredictable consequence after severe midface or skull base trauma. Based on a previously described rat model, the authors developed a new model in order to simulate optic nerve crush during trauma on the optic canal. METHODS: To achieve a calibrated TONL, a microinjuring device was designed that made it possible to assess the correlation between a defined trauma and the neuronal degeneration in the rat retinal ganglion cell (RGC) layer. This device is based on a small dynamometer mounted onto a conventional micromanipulator.

Axial movement of the dual-optic accommodating intraocular lens for the correction of the presbyopia: optical performance and clinical outcomes.

Presbyopia occurs in the aging eye due to changes in the ciliary muscle, zonular fibers, crystalline lens, and an increased lens sclerosis. As a consequence, the capacity of accommodation decreases, which hampers to focus near objects. With the aim of restoring near vision, different devices that produce multiple focuses have been developed and introduced. However, these devices are still unable to restore accommodation. In order to achieve that goal, dual-optic accommodating Intraocular Lenses have been designed, whose anterior optic displaces axially to increase ocular power, and focus near

Long-lived stationary holographic gratings and optical memory in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals.

Stable stationary holographic gratings were recorded in a pure, room-temperature ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (NFLC) using degenerate two-wave mixing. These structures exhibit extraordinary six-month stability and resist erasure under the electric-field and thermal-cycling conditions investigated, indicating a persistent material modification rather than reversible reorientation. Polarization-dependent readout reveals nearly constant diffraction efficiency despite strongly anisotropic transmission of the host medium, indicating both phase and amplitude contributions to the optical resp

Procedure via cross-Kerr nonlinearities for encoding single logical qubit information onto four-photon decoherence-free states.

We propose a photonic procedure using cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs) to encode single logical qubit information onto four-photon decoherence-free states. In quantum information processing, a decoherence-free subspace can secure quantum information against collective decoherence. Therefore, we design a procedure employing nonlinear optical gates, which are composed of XKNLs, quantum bus beams, and photon-number-resolving measurements with linear optical devices, to conserve quantum information by encoding quantum information onto four-photon decoherence-free states (single logical qubit info…

Comparison between Different Structures of Suspended-Core Microstructured Optical Fibers for Volatiles Sensing.

In this paper, different core structures of microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) for low-finesse Fabry⁻Pérot (FP) sensors are experimentally compared to get the highest sensitivity. These devices are designed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measurements. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited by sputtering on the MOFs and different optical fast Fourier transform (FFT) phase responses from the FP were measured for saturated atmospheres of ethanol. It has been demonstrated that the sensitivities of the developed sensors depend strongly on the geometry and the dimensions of the M

A plasmonic nanoledge array sensor for detection of anti-insulin antibodies of type 1 diabetes biomarker.

Here we present a plasmonic nanoledge device with high sensitivity and selectivity used to detect protein biomarkers simply by functionalizing the device, which specifically binds to particular biomolecule or biomarkers. We employ this plasmonic nanoledge device for the detection of anti-insulin antibodies of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in buffer and human serum at the range of pg ml-1 to 100 ng ml-1. The signal transduction is based on the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through the nanoledge array and the optical spectral changes with the biological binding reaction between the surface fu

Estimation of spectral mismatch correction factor f1' indicated by radiometer responsivity toward phototherapic infant devices.

The main aim of this research is to assess the variation in phototherapy radiometer responsivities toward the optical power of the phototherapeutic devices and hence estimate the spectral mismatch correction factor f1'. Two conventional phototherapy devices were studied to verify their spectral irradiance and three different phototherapy radiometers were studied for their responsivity at the range 400-500 nm. The results show the dependence of total irradiance measurement of phototherapy sources on matching between phototherapy radiometer band responsivity and spectral irradiance of the photot
