The treatment of skeletal class III and anterior open bite can be unstable and orthodontists frequently observe relapse. Here, we report on the management of three patients with skeletal class III profiles and open bites treated by orthodontic camouflage. Each received a retention protocol involving the use of two separate appliances during the night and day accompanied by myofunctional therapy. Long-term follow-up revealed a stable outcome.

A detailed clinical examination is important for early diagnosis of oral lesions in every dental specialty, including orthodontics, particularly because these patients are constantly checked during orthodontic treatment. This report describes 2 men receiving orthodontic treatment and who had swelling on the hard palate diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Both patients received appropriate treatment and had a good prognosis because of the rapid recognition of these oral lesions by their orthodontists.

General practitioners have observed the changes in appliance design in their own patients in treatment by local orthodontists. This article discusses state-of-the-art orthodontic biomechanics and appliance design, and the impetus that has led many clinicians to adopt biomechanically sound treatment innovations that avoid damage to dental roots and their supporting tissues.

The functional differences between breast-feeding and bottle-feeding may have a significant effect on dento-facial development and on the genesis of some severe malocclusions. Orthodontists should be aware of this sometimes under-estimated aspect of development. They should, in conformity with their role as professional health care providers, advise long-term breast feeding as a way of preventing certain disorders or, at least, reducing their severity.

Eruption disturbances of teeth should not be considered as a curiosity. Acquaintance with these phenomena should form a substantial component of the dentist's, orthodontist's and oral and maxillofacial surgeon's basic expertise. Early detection of these disturbances followed by treatment in due time, can minimise progressive negative effects, such as the development of severe malocclusion. Treatment modalities are described.

What's in a pretty face? In our world, unfortunately, too much. As orthodontists our goal should be to provide our patients with a stable, functional occlusion. Consider, however, the importance of changing our patients' future by significantly improving their facial esthetics. The combination of a very narrow maxillary arch, three absent upper left incisors, and a protrusive lower jaw provide a platform for dramatic improvement in our patients' facial esthetics.
