Diagnosis of rare diseases based on facial phenotype: a quantitative assessment using 2D and 3D photography in Stickler syndrome.

Stickler syndrome (SS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in collagen-encoding genes. Patients with SS are at an increased risk of retinal detachment, with ophthalmologic complications often presenting as the first symptom due to significant diagnostic delays. These delays contribute to severe visual impairment, even in early childhood, making diagnostic uncertainty a major clinical challenge. This study assessed the feasibility of early SS detection using facial features. Supervised machine learning models, including XGBoost and support vector machines (SVM), were applied to 2D an

Nature As a "Lifeline": The Power of Photography When Exploring the Experiences of Older Adults Living With Memory Loss and Memory Concerns.

The visual is an underutilized modality through which to investigate experiences of memory loss in older people. We describe a visual ethnography with older adults experiencing subjective or objective memory loss, receiving a cognitive well-being group intervention designed to prevent cognitive decline and dementia (APPLE-Tree program). We aimed to explore lived experiences of people with memory concerns, how participants engaged with this photography and codesign project, and how collaboration with an artist/photographer enhanced this process. Nineteen participants shared photographs reflecti…

Effective field of view of wide-field fundus photography in the Stanford University Network for Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity (SUNDROP).

Five-field 130° wide-angle imaging is the standard of care for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening with an ideal hypothetical composite field-of-view (FOV) of 180°. We hypothesized that in many real-world scenarios the effective composite FOV is considerably less than ideal. This observational retrospective study analyzed the effective FOV of fundus photos of patients screened for ROP as part of the Stanford University Network for Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity (SUNDROP) initiative. Five fundus photos were selected from each eye per image session. Effective FOV was defined as t

Simultaneous, radiation-free registration of the dentoalveolar position and the face by combining 3D photography with a portable scanner and impression-taking.

OBJECTIVES: Simultaneous, radiation-free registration of the teeth and the upper and lower jaw positions in relation to the extraoral soft tissue could improve treatment planning and documentation. The purpose of this study is to describe a workflow to solve this form of registration and surface acquisition with a mobile device. METHODS: Facial scans of ten healthy participants were taken using a blue-light LED 3D scanner (Artec® Space Spider; Artec® Group; Luxembourg). An impression of the maxillary dentoalveolar arch was taken simultaneously to the 3D photo using a modified impression tray

Characteristic findings on imaging of cervical spondylolisthesis: Analysis of computed tomography and X-ray photography in 101 spondylolisthesis patients.

INTRODUCTION: The characteristics of cervical spondylolisthesis are not currently fully understood, because of the shortage of reports covering the large population of patients with cervical spondylolisthesis. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the characteristics of cervical spondylolisthesis by examining a relatively large number of cases. METHODS: We analyzed 101 cases with more than 2 mm of vertebral listhesis as determined from X-ray or computed tomography (CT) images among 731 patients who underwent surgery at a single institute. We considered the C2-7 angle, range of motion, an

Development and clinical validation of a novel photography-based skin pigmentation evaluation system: a comparison with the calculated consensus of dermatologists.

OBJECTIVE: Various cosmetics, medicines, and light and laser treatments have been increasingly developed to improve pigmentary skin alterations such as melasma, actinic lentigo and dyschromia. To determine the efficacy of these modalities in view of the changes in pigmentation, an objective and reliable device that has a comparable performance to that of physicians is required. We developed a novel photography-based skin pigmentation evaluation system and validated its accuracy and reliability with a newly proposed method. METHODS: A novel photography-based system was developed that integrate…

Three-dimensional analysis of knee joint movement with biplanar photography, with special reference to the analysis of 'dynamic' knee instabilities.

An apparatus was developed by means of which it was possible to move a cadaveric knee joint under a constant external force and to measure its movement in three dimensions using biplanar photography, to investigate mechanisms of 'dynamic' knee instabilities, such as the 'pivot shift' phenomenon. Two wire frameworks, one attached to the femur, the other to the tibia, defined a system of three mutually orthogonal axes. While the knee joint was moved under a given force, a series of biplanar photographs of the two frameworks were taken. This procedure was repeated after sectioning different ligam…

Diagnostic Performance of Deep Learning Models for Ocular Toxoplasmosis Using Fundus Photography: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is the leading infectious cause of posterior uveitis worldwide, yet diagnosis remains challenging without a universal gold standard. Although deep learning (DL) shows significant promise for automated image analysis, a rigorous synthesis of its diagnostic accuracy across heterogeneous architectures and datasets is lacking. METHODS: Following PRISMA-DTA and CLAIM-AI guidelines, we searched major databases through January 2026 for studies evaluating DL models for OT detection using fundus photography. Methodological quality was appraised using QUADAS-2. A b…
