Longitudinal study of spherical refractive error in infantile nystagmus syndrome.

PURPOSE: To explore the onset and progression of spherical refractive error in a population with infantile nystagmus syndrome. METHODS: Retrospective refractive error data were obtained from 147 medical records of children with infantile nystagmus syndrome (albinism n = 98; idiopathic infantile nystagmus n = 49), attending a low vision clinic in Northern Ireland, over a 24 year period (1986-2010). Data were categorised by age to allow for comparisons with published studies. A prospective group of participants with Infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) [n = 22 (albinism n = 18, idiopathic infanti

Negative lens-induced myopia in infant monkeys: effects of high ambient lighting.

PURPOSE: To determine whether high light levels, which have a protective effect against form-deprivation myopia, also retard the development of lens-induced myopia in primates. METHODS: Hyperopic defocus was imposed on 27 monkeys by securing -3 diopter (D) lenses in front of one eye. The lens-rearing procedures were initiated at 24 days of age and continued for periods ranging from 50 to 123 days. Fifteen of the treated monkeys were exposed to normal laboratory light levels (∼350 lux). For the other 12 lens-reared monkeys, auxiliary lighting increased the illuminance to 25,000 lux for 6 hours

A canine model of inherited myopia: familial aggregation of refractive error in labrador retrievers.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the distribution of naturally occurring myopia in Labrador Retrievers has a genetic component. METHODS: Pedigree records of a large canine family were analyzed. Pure Labrador Retrievers, 1 to 8 years of age, free of ocular disease, and available for testing were studied. Refractive error was measured by cycloplegic retinoscopy in both eyes. The family included mating loops, and so an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm (multivar program, MORGAN software; University of Washington, Seattle) was used to calculate log likelihoods of refractive error with environm

Image-level tortuosity estimation in wide-field retinal images from infants with Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Tortuosity and dilation of retinal vessels are considered of primary importance for the diagnosis and follow-up of the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) disease. We developed an algorithm to estimate vessel tortuosity in images acquired with a wide-field fundus camera in ROP subjects, offering clinicians a quantitative, objective, and reproducible diagnostic parameter. Vessels were manually traced in 20 images to provide error-free input data for the tortuosity estimation. At first we investigated different vessel-level measures, some including also caliber information. Then we used them to obt
