BACKGROUND: Adams-Oliver syndrome is characterized by the combination of congenital scalp defects and terminal transverse limb defects. In some instances, cardiovascular malformations and orofacial malformations have been observed. Little is written with regards to the anesthetic management and airway concerns of patients with Adams-Oliver syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A five-year-old female with Adams-Oliver syndrome presented for repeat lower extremity surgery. Airway exam was significant for dysmorphic features, such as hypertelorism, deviated jaw, and retrognathia. Video laryngoscope was u

BACKGROUND: Kyphoscoliosis is a complication of some bone dysplasias, including cleidocranial dysplasia.
OBJECTIVES: We report a distinct disorder with defective ossification of the ischial rami, severe kyphoscoliosis and normal clavicles. Early recognition of this syndrome allows prevention of complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patient cases (aged 1 day to 33 years) were selected according to the above criteria, with special attention to radiological findings, family history and follow-up (5-30 years).
RESULTS: In all eight patients, we observed the following: (a) Severe thoracic sc

The aim of this study was to survey an international group of temporomandibular joint surgeons regarding their outcomes with alloplastic total joint replacement in skeletally immature patients and to review the literature linked to autogenous reconstruction and alloplastic replacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJR) in this population. A total of 24 custom/patient-specific TMJ Concepts devices were implanted into 14 patients (eight male and six female). Their mean age was 14 years (range 7-17 years). Nine (64.3%) had bilateral devices and five (35.7%) had unilateral devices. The most pre

Patients with cleft lip and palate frequently develop dento-facial deformity requiring orthognatic surgery. The origin of this deformity is therapeutic and surgeons are currently trying to prevent this iatrogenicity. The maxillary dento-facial deformity in these patients is a retrognathia with infragnathia, associated with endognathia, obliquity of the occlusal plane, with deviation of the superior incisive midline in case of unilateral clefts. The difficulties in the treatment of these skeletal deformities are due to the palatal, labial, and pterygomaxillary scar tissue. Orthognathic surgery

BACKGROUND: Dermatoglyphics, the study of fingerprint patterns, is derived from the ectoderm, the same embryological layer responsible for craniofacial development. Its potential as a non-invasive diagnostic tool has been explored in various medical and dental conditions, including skeletal Class II malocclusion.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the correlation between dermatoglyphic patterns and cephalometric angles (SNA and SNB) in Class II skeletal malocclusion to establish a novel diagnostic approach.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 participants (aged 18:35 years) diagnosed wi

OBJECTIVE: The morbidity and mortality associated with the Marfan Syndrome (MFS) warrant timely diagnosis and intervention that can improve long-term prognosis. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a distinct craniofacial morphology exists for patients with MFS that can be described quantitatively and qualitatively.
METHODS: Subjects with a positive diagnosis of MFS were recruited for this study (N = 36). Craniofacial anthropometric measurements were made on each subject and compared to established norms of age- and sex-matched controls using z-scores calculated for measureme

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that sagittal mandibular development has no effects on the dimensions of the awake pharyngeal airway passage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-one subjects (age 15-25 years) with a normal vertical growth pattern of the mandible, normally positioned maxilla, and various sagittal mandibular developments were divided into three groups based on the sagittal mandibular development. Group I included 37 subjects who had a normally positioned mandible (76 degrees < or = angle between 'S,' 'N,' and 'B'; it represents the antero-posterior position of the maxilla in relati

Unilateral subcondylar vertical osteotomy of the mandibular ramus was performed in 26 patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism (AMP). 16 of 26 patients had temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms before surgery. Asymmetric mandibular prognathism was combined with maxillary micro-retrognathism in 15 patients. Condyle position was evaluated by pre- and postoperative computed tomography (CT) data. Unlike mandibular sagittal split osteotomy with rigid fixation, the vertical subcondylar osteotomy with wire osteosyntheses allows to keep preoperative condylar head position on the side of hypert

A single mandibular incisor and an unusually narrow mandible and tongue were noted in an 8-year-old moderately retarded boy with 18p- (45, XY, der dic (18) (18qter-p11.2::22p 11.2-qter). While a single maxillary incisor, considered a minor feature of holoprosencephaly, was reported in three cases of 18p-, reduction of mandibular incisors has been a very rare finding and has never been noted in similar cases.

Facial nerve palsy following a sagittal split osteotomy is a rare but serious complication. The incidence of facial nerve injury in a group of 1747 patients who had undergone a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (3494 sagittal splits) was determined and proved to be 0.26% (9 cases). The case histories of 2 patients are presented, and the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this complication are discussed.

Pronounced tonsilar hypertrophy was found in two obese patients suffering from hypersomnolence, periodic attacks of apnea and disturbing snoring at night. Both patients underwent tonsillectomy. Immediately after the operation the hypersomnolence disappeared, the breathing became normal, and the disturbing snoring at night ceased. Follow-up over a period of three years did not reveal any recurrence of these symptoms, even though the patients had not lost any weight during this period.

The aim of the presented study was to assess the impact of mandibular advancement on the upper airways patterns, on the position of soft palate, hyoid bone and tongue. The set of 12 patients who underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy advancement surgery only, without genioplasty, for correction of retromandibularism (skeletal class II malocclusions) was evaluated. Rigid internal fixation was used in all the patients without rigid intermaxillary fixation. Measurements were taken in cephalograms obtained after the orthodontic decompensation and immediately after the surgery. In the set of

The chin is an element as important in facial profile as the nose and the forehead. It is subject to morphological anomalies in the sagittal (retrogenius or progenius), vertical (excess or insufficient height), or transversal (laterogenius) axes. Genioplasty used alone or in complement to other maxillomandibular osteotomies, allows for the correction of these malformations by modifying the position of the chin bones in three planes. Many types of genioplasty may be used to reach the desire goal, such as advancement, retraction, or adjustment of height or of symmetry. This genioplasty also has
