Developing a nurse-led reproductive health mobile health unit in rural Illinois: Opportunity to promote faculty practice and student training.

Mobile health units (MHUs) in the United States have grown to over 3,000 nationwide, increasing health care access and equity to underserved communities. Although MHUs have demonstrated improved patient outcomes, there is a lack of literature on partnering with nursing colleges and their faculty. This report will share how a college of nursing and their office of faculty practice and partnerships in a large midwestern state university implemented a nurse-led MHU to deliver reproductive health care to rural communities in central Illinois, incorporating advanced practice registered nurses (APRN

The Changing Landscape of Community Health Centers in Rural America: A Commentary on Federal Policy Developments.

Community health centers in rural communities provide primary care and other health services that are essential, particularly given the closures and reductions of services by rural hospitals. The centers play a critical role in delivering affordable and accessible care as part of the safety-net health care system for low-income, publicly insured, and uninsured patients. In this commentary, we highlight several key considerations related to community health centers in rural communities and reflect on the sustainability of the centers, given the current focus on budgetary cuts and changing lands

Where state, market, and community meet: Village doctors and the governance of rural health in China.

INTRODUCTION: Effective health governance is essential for ensuring accessible, equitable, efficient, and high-quality healthcare services. Yet it is often overlooked or oversimplified in health services studies in rural China. We examine the unique role of village doctors in shaping public health governance in rural China. METHODS: A two-phase ethnographic study was conducted in Gaomi, Shandong, from February to May 2023. Phase one involved a one-month in-field rapid assessment of the local health system. Phase two included two months of fieldwork, with participant observation and informal i

Financial health and well-being of rural female caregivers of older adults with chronic illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Rural caregivers experience significant financial stressors while caring for their older family members with chronic illnesses. Limited access to care, support, and resources in rural areas poses significant financial threats and insecurity for some caregivers. As the majority of rural family caregivers are women, these challenges also represent gender disparities, role imbalances, and division of labor in the society that has rarely been explored in the literature from a rural context. To address these gaps, our study aims to explore the lived experiences of financial burdens and

Norms of masculinity: community voices on sexual and reproductive health communication in rural southwestern Uganda.

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) communication between parents and children is critical for adolescent well-being but remains limited in many Sub-Saharan African contexts. This study examined how masculinity norms shape SRH communication between parents and boys in rural southwestern Uganda, where such interactions are often constrained by gender socialisation, fear-based approaches, and traditional expectations of masculinity. Using qualitative methods and a community-based participatory research design, data were collected from emerging adults, parents and community stakeholders to ident

Rurality, Health Care Resource Use, and Care Trajectories in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) epidemiology varies geographically, and rural populations (typically less affluent) may face barriers accessing cancer care, which could lead to worse outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To compare health care resource use between patients with HNC living in urban and rural areas. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort study in Alberta, Canada. Participants were adult patients (aged ≥18 years) diagnosed with HNC with at least 1 year of posttreatment follow-up between January 2012 and September 2020. Data were analyzed from August to September 2024. E

Heat vulnerability: health impacts of heat on older people in urban and rural areas in Europe.

Exposure to extreme heat is associated with both increased morbidity and mortality, especially in older people. Health burdens associated with heat include heat stroke, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ischemic heart diseases, heart failure and arrhythmia, pulmonary diseases but also injuries, problems with activities of daily living, and mental disorders. In Europe, there are remarkable spatial differences in heat exposure between urban and less populated areas. In Austria, for example, there is a significant gradual association between population density and the number of heat days, where th

Implementation of CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 genotyping to guide antidepressant use in a large rural health system.

PURPOSE: We describe the implementation and ongoing maintenance of CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 focused pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing to guide antidepressant and antianxiety medication prescriptions in a large rural, nonprofit health system. SUMMARY: Depression and anxiety are common psychiatric conditions. Sanford Health implemented PGx testing for metabolism of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozymes 2C19 and 2D6 in 2014 to inform prescribing for multiple medications, including antidepressant and antianxiety therapies. As guidelines, genotype to phenotype translation, panel offerings, and other resources are

Patient Practices, Perceptions, and Barriers to Self-measurement of Blood Pressure in a Rural Health System.

BACKGROUND: Self-measurement of blood pressure (SMBP) is endorsed by current guidelines for diagnosing and managing hypertension (HTN). We surveyed individuals in a rural healthcare system on practices and attitudes related to SMBP that could guide future practice. METHODS: Survey questions were sent via an online patient portal to a random sample of 56,275 patients with either BP > 140/90 mm Hg or cardiovascular care in the system. Questions addressed home blood pressure (BP) monitor ownership, use, willingness to purchase, desire to share data with providers, perceptions of patient educatio

Rabies in rural northeast India: A case report emphasising the urgency of the One Health approach.

Dog-mediated rabies is endemic in India. The country records the highest mortality due to dog-bite-related rabies despite the availability of interventions to prevent deaths. We present a case study of the death of a 59-year-old man in a suburban town of Northeast India after a dog bite from an owned pup. Through this case study, we investigate various omissions and commissions in communities and health professionals that make rabies rampant in India. The circumstances surrounding the death were investigated by interviewing the wife, relatives, neighbour, the hospital/nursing home where the bi

Opioid Literacy Among Individuals Living in Rural Alabama: The Role of Social Determinants of Health.

Using the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, the current study aimed to examine opioid literacy and the role of SDOH on opioid literacy. This study used a cross-sectional survey design to collect self-reported data from people living in four rural Alabama counties affected by the opioid crisis. Participants reported moderate levels of opioid knowledge. There were no significant predictors of general knowledge. For opioid overdose knowledge, the strongest individual predictors were educational level (Bachelor's degree) and self-rated financial strain, which contributed to higher sc

METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled adolescents aged 13-19 in six rural and six urban schools in Osun State, Nigeria. We measured the prevalence of poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score >5), daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale
