Heritability estimations for diseases, coat color, body weight, and height in a birth cohort of Boxers.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain heritability estimates for diseases and characteristics in Boxers. ANIMALS: Birth cohort of 2,929 purebred Boxers from 414 litters. PROCEDURE: Heritability estimates were determined for cheiloschisis-palatoschisis, cryptorchidism, epilepsy, stifle disorders, cardiac disorders, coat color, birth weight, and adult weight, and height. Binary traits were analyzed by use of a mixed-effects probit model. Some traits also were analyzed by use of a model that postulated monogenic inheritance. Full pedigree analyses were performed. Variation in incidences of disease among cluster…

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF UPWARD FIXATION OF THE PATELLA VIA MEDIAL PATELLAR LIGAMENT DESMOTOMY IN A LOWLAND TAPIR (TAPIRUS TERRESTRIS).

Tapirs are endangered terrestrial mammals that inhabit several continents. They have anatomical similarities to horses, sharing a common ancestral lineage. This article reports the case of a 14-yr-old female lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) presented for intermittent lameness due to upward fixation of the patella causing extension of the limb in the caudal phase of the stride. Medial patellar desmotomy was performed under general anesthesia, correcting the problem. To date there are no reports of this condition or treatment recommendations in tapirs. An anatomical study including stifle diss…

Discrepancy between true distance of tibial tuberosity advancement and cage size: An ex vivo study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the discrepancy between true distance of tibial tuberosity advancement (tTTA) and the most commonly used cages. The null hypothesis was that tTTA would be within 1.5 mm difference of the cage size. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Eight foam cortical shell specimens modeled from canine tibias. METHODS: Modified tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) was performed to allow repeated measurement of the tTTA. The Pearson correlation test was used to evaluate the relationships of tTTA and cage sizes (P < .05). The difference between tTTA and cage size was calc

Assessment of the Diagnostic Value of the Sit Test as a Screening Test for Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture in Dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is primarily through physical examination, imaging, and intra-articular assessment. Assessment of sit position where affected dogs abduct and extend the stifle to reduce discomfort has been proposed to aid diagnosis but not evaluated as a diagnostic test. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sit position and CCLR and assess the sit test as a diagnostic tool. STUDY DESIGN: Dogs with CCLR or hip dysplasia (HD) diagnosis were prospectively recruited and allocated to affected (CCLR) and unaffected (HD and normal sti…

Porous tibial tuberosity advancement without using flange for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs-a clinical pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Porous tibial tuberosity advancement (porous-TTA) is a surgical technique used to treat cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating its application without technical modifications such as the inclusion of a flange- under real-world clinical conditions and with standardized monitoring of bone healing and osteoarthritis progression. This pilot study aims to provide preliminary clinical data on porous-TTA without a flange. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen stifles diagnosed with CCL rupture treated with porous-TTA without a flange …

Femorotibial joint rotation in intact joints and following partial medial collateral ligament transection, tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, and cranial cruciate ligament transection - A limb press study.

Despite widespread use of tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), the influence of partial medial collateral ligament transection (pMCLX) and physiologic loading on rotational stability remains unclear. This cadaveric study quantified internal and external tibial rotation in canine stifles under simulated weightbearing conditions. Ten unpaired pelvic limbs were mounted in a custom limb press applying axial loads equivalent to 30 % body weight with the stifle fixed at 135°. Quadriceps tension was simulated using a load cell and turnbuckle, and controlled internal and external torques (0.007 N…

Postoperative efficacy of chondroprotectors and diacerein in dogs with osteoarthritis secondary to cranial cruciate ligament disease.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament disease is one of the leading causes of pelvic limb claudication in canines and osteoarthritis in the stifle joint. Historically, studies have focused on surgical options to improve the stability of the stifle joint, although none of the techniques described in the literature prevents the development of osteoarthritis. AIM: This study aimed at proving the presence of osteoarthritis at the time of diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, as well as evaluating the benefits of administering diacerein (DAR) or chondroprotective coadjuvants to the extra…

Increased vascular permeability evoked by mechanical trauma and haemarthrosis in synovium of the rat.

Increased vascular permeability was studied in the synovium of the rat's stifle joint following mechanical trauma and haemarthrosis. The abnormal permeability was detected by injecting colloidal carbon intravenously and examining the synovial vessels for intra-mural deposits of carbon. The effects of rotational and stretch injuries were minimal except when accompanied by intra-synovial haemorrhage. Injection of autologous whole blood into the joint evoked a marked venular permeability response which persisted for 24 hours. These findings indicate that the major factor in the formation of traum…

Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease for the Small Animal Practitioner.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) disease is a common pelvic limb condition in canines. It is most commonly a degenerative process but can also result from trauma. Diagnosis is primarily based on orthopedic examination using the cranial drawer and tibial compression (thrust) tests, although other secondary changes to the stifle and radiographic findings can be supportive. Surgical treatment is generally recommended, with good functional outcomes reported following many different procedures. Contralateral CrCL rupture, medial meniscal injuries, and secondary osteoarthritis are common concurrent …

Use of the Thomas splint and cast combination, walker splint, and spica bandage with an over the shoulder splint for the treatment of fractures of the upper limbs in cattle.

Many tibial and radial-ulnar fractures in cattle and small ruminants may be treated successfully with Thomas splint and cast combinations (TSCC). The Walker splint has been specifically designed for treating tibial fractures and stifle injuries in cattle. It usually fits better in rear limbs of cattle than the TSCC and thus can provide more stability. Spica bandages combined with lateral splints placed over the dorsum of the affected limb and down the contralateral shoulder may be used for partial immobilization of humeral fractures in calves and small ruminants when surgical repair is not an o…

Causes of copulatory failure in beef bulls.

A cow in full standing estrus is required to assess a bull's ability to copulate. Insufficient libido is not involved if the bull sniffs the cow's vulva and attempts to mount. Blood or pus exiting the penis or prepuce indicates penile or preputial lacerations or other lesions. Rear foot or stifle lesions, seminal vesiculitis, traumatic reticulitis or lumbar spinal injuries may prevent the bull from mounting. Preputial stenosis, penile adhesions, desensitization, hematomas or deviations, peripreputial abscess, cavernosal shunts, insufficient penile length and occlusions of the cavernosal canals…
