PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Traumatic childbirth can lead to childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) or retraumatize those with prior trauma, contributing to long-term maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. This condition affects approximately 4-7% of postpartum patients. Given the concerningly high maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the USA, it is crucial to further analyze the risk factors and clinical management recommendations for the prevention of CB-PTSD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Research highlights the negative outcomes and high costs associated with CB-PTSD. Studies

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which develops in susceptible individuals after life-threatening or traumatizing events, manifests as a heightened anxiety and startle reflex, disordered sleep, nightmares, flashbacks, and avoidance of triggers. Moreover, PTSD is a predictor and independent risk factor of numerous cardiovascular comorbidities, including stroke, myocardial infarction, coronary atherosclerosis, and atrial fibrillation. Compounding the direct detrimental effects of PTSD on the cardiovascular system, this condition provokes classical cardiovascular risk factors, including hig

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms related to work in pediatric departments aremajor public health problems, as they directly affect health organizations, healthcare workers, and, due to the poor quality of care, the patients as well. The post-traumatic symptoms that a healthcare worker may experience are related to intrusion, avoidance, negative changes in cognition and mood, and changes in arousal and reactivity. The aim of the present investigation was to identify risk factors that contribute to the development of PTSD in pediatric healthcare workers, in order to implement necessary wo

Introduction: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition characterised by several disturbances in an individual's executive functioning. We were interested in the link between executive functions and the presence of anxiety and depression in a clinical population with post-traumatic stress disorder. Methods: Our sample comprised 180 participants divided into three groups: 60 with PTSD, 60 trauma-exposed without PTSD, and 60 controls. All participants were assessed on the following dimensions: PTSD, dissociation, executive functions, anxiety, and depression. Results: Consistent with the

In the field of psychiatry, biological markers are rarely, if ever, used in the diagnosis of mental health disorders. Clinicians rely primarily on patient histories and behavioral symptoms to identify specific psychopathologies, which makes diagnosis highly subjective. Moreover, therapies for mental health disorders are aimed specifically at attenuating behavioral manifestations, which overlooks the pathophysiological indices of the disease. This is highly evident in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) where inflammation and immune system perturbations are becoming increasingly described. Fur

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), currently included by the Diagnostic and Statistical of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision in the macro-category "disorders related to traumatic and stressful events", is a severe mental distress that arises acutely as a result of direct or indirect exposure to severely stressful and traumatic events. A large body of literature is available on the psychological and behavioral manifestations of PTSD; however, with regard to the more purely neuropsychological aspects of the disorder, they are still the subject of research and need greater clarit

The existing theories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have inspired large volumes of research and have contributed substantially to our current knowledge base. However, most of the theories are of a qualitative and verbal nature, and may be difficult to evaluate and compare with each other. In this paper, we propose that one way forward is to use computational modelling to formulate more precise theories of PTSD that can be evaluated by (1) assessing whether the model can explain fundamental phenomena related to PTSD, and (2) comparing simulated outcomes with real data. Computational

BACKGROUND: The estimated lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults worldwide has been estimated at 3.9%. PTSD appears to contribute to alterations in neuronal network connectivity patterns. Current pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for PTSD are associated with inadequate symptom improvement and high dropout rates. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive therapy involving induction of electrical currents in cortical brain tissue, may be an important treatment option for PTSD to improve remission rates and for people who ca

Epilepsy, a chronic neurological condition characterized by unpredictable seizures, poses considerable challenges, including disability, stigma, and increased mortality. Psychiatric comorbidities are prevalent in 20-30% of epilepsy patients, notably mood or anxiety disorders, psychotic symptoms, and personality disorders. Trauma and childhood adversities are pivotal risk factors for psychopathology, yet the link between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and epilepsy remains underexplored. This meta-analysis is aimed to establish updated estimates of PTSD prevalence among individuals with e

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). We examined the relation between PTSD and PD in a cohort of 158,122 Veterans who had any Veterans Health Administration (VHA) or Medicare health care utilization between 10/1/1999- 2/17/2021. Using a nested case-control design we matched 10 controls to each Veteran with PD by sex, race, and rank. In conditional logistic regression models adjusted for camp and smoking, a PTSD diagnosis was significantly associated with PD (OR = 1.35; p = 0.0002); odds were higher if PTSD was coded before PD (OR = 1.53, p <

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder resulting from traumatic events which are characterized primarily by anxiety and depressive disorder. In this study, we determine the role of gut bacteria in PTSD. PTSD-like symptoms were produced by single prolonged stress (SPS). SPS animals showed increased levels of anxiety as measured by the elevated plus maze test, while depressive behaviour was confirmed using sucrose preference, force swim, and tail suspension tests. Gut dysbiosis was confirmed in PTSD animals by next-generation sequencing of 16 s RNA of faecal samples, while th

This paper describes the development and validation of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Assessment Scale for Emergency Services (PASES). The PASES was developed to address the needs of Australia's first National Mental Health and Wellbeing Study of Police and Emergency Services, Answering the Call (AtC) which covered Police, Ambulance, Fire and Rescue and State Emergency Services personnel. PASES offers several advantages for use in the emergency services sector over other Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) screening scales, including assessment of functional impairment, a dimensional mea

Antidepressants are a commonly used, easily accessible, and overall safe treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in treating sleep disturbances in patients with PTSD. PubMed and the Cochrane Library were searched (July 2022) for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the treatment of PTSD. Moreover, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for individual trials investigating the antidepressant treatment of PTSD (up to September 2022), and reference lists of all possibly relevant identified st
