Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in the Breastfeeding Infant.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the importance of utilizing fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) when evaluating breastfeeding infants with suspected dysphagia. Failure to recognize and account for the fundamentally different physiology of the primarily breastfed infant can lead to false assumptions about the safety of breastfeeding in this understudied patient population. METHODS: Case-series. The medical records of patients referred to an urban, university-based, pediatric hospital for FEES from February 2017 to October 2020 were reviewed. Their presenting symptoms, dysphagia sev

The Development and Implementation of A Data Repository for Swallow Studies.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical note is to (a) describe the development of an open-source data repository of videofluoroscopic evaluations of swallow studies (VFSS) from individuals across the lifespan with various feeding and swallowing disorders, and (b) to qualitatively assess the usefulness of a repository to engage students in research in swallowing disorders. METHOD: This project was divided into two phases. Phase 1 focused on the development of the repository. This entailed identifying videos, removing private information, developing codes for swallow events and bolus variables,

The effect of rasagiline on swallowing function in Parkinson's disease.

Dysphagia, a potentially fatal symptom of Parkinson's disease, is characterized by frequent silent aspiration, a risk factor for aspiration pneumonia. The transdermal dopamine agonist rotigotine alleviates dysphagia in patients with Parkinson's disease and is more effective than oral levodopa, suggesting the importance of continuous dopaminergic stimulation during swallowing. Rasagiline is a monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) inhibitor that facilitates continuous dopaminergic stimulation. We hypothesized that MAOB inhibition by rasagiline would be effective in improving swallowing function in patients

Swallowing Related Problems of Toddlers with Down Syndrome.

The study was aimed to define swallowing related problems of toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) by comparing toddlers with typically developing children (TDC). A total of 127 children (96 DS, 31 TDC), and their mothers included in the study. The presence of chewing disorders, food selectivity, drooling, coughing during swallowing was scored as 'absent' or 'present'. The Pediatric version of the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (PEDI EAT-10) was used to determine dysphagia symptom severity, and the Turkish version of the Feeding/Swallowing Impact Survey (T-FS-IS) was used to measure the impact of swallo

Respiratory-swallow coordination in a rat model of chemoradiation.

BACKGROUND: Chemoradiation treatment (CRT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) is associated with postswallow inhale events that elevate the risk of penetration/aspiration. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of a rat model for investigating the effect of CRT on respiratory-swallow coordination. METHODS: Videofluoroscopic swallow study was performed on 10 Sprague-Dawley rats 3 months post-CRT (3 mg/kg Cisplatin, 10 fractions of 4.5 Gy/day radiotherapy to tongue base), and 10 naïve controls. We examined the effect of CRT on swallow apnea duration, diaphragm movement, and bolus kine

Swallowing difficulties caused by a voice prosthesis in a laryngectomee.

INTRODUCTION: The role of voice prosthesis (VP) in causing swallowing difficulties has not been thoroughly evaluated. A laryngectomee with dysphasia caused by a VP is presented. CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old laryngectomee presented with dysphagia. He had hypo pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, which was treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy 13 years earlier. Cancer recurrence 2 years later required laryngectomy and forearm free flap restoration. The patient used trachea-oesophageal speech for communication using Provox® Vega 22.5/Fr 6mm. Diagnostic endoscopy revealed significant oesopha

Swallowed by the bone - Is skin reaction the "tip of the iceberg"?

The most frequent complications of osseointegrated implantation include implant-site infections, soft tissue overgrowth and failure of osseointegration. Bone overgrowth is also a complication at the abutment site and infrequently reported. We describe a rare case of difficult control and exuberant bone overgrowth, with total implant involvement, in a short period of time never before described in the literature. Bone growth around the implant is frequently underestimated and can be the cause of difficult control of skin reactions, that in some cases is just the "tip of the iceberg". Timely sur

Evaluation of swallowing function in patients with oropharyngeal secretions.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported a strong association between the presence of oropharyngeal secretions in the laryngeal vestibule and the likelihood of aspiration of food or liquid. However, no previous studies have evaluated the accumulation of saliva and swallowing dynamics. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the factors related to decreased function that result in saliva accumulation based on images from videofluoroscopic examination of swallowing (VF) performed on the same day as videoendoscopic examination of swallowing (VE). METHODS: This retrospective study

Respiratory-Swallow Pattern Following Total Laryngectomy.

The goal of this study was to further characterize respiratory patterns in total laryngectomees with attention to respiratory-swallow pattern as it relates to presence/absence of tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) and bolus consistency. It was hypothesized that participants with TEP would exhibit respiratory-swallow patterns that were significantly different than those without TEP and that bolus consistency (thin or solid) would modulate respiratory-swallow pattern. Data were collected from 12 adults (8 male), aged 46-67 years (mean 57) status post total laryngectomy (1-30 years; average 6 years

Swallowing disorders in an older fractured hip population.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is prevalent in the older population and might lead to complications, such as pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration. This study examines an older population post hip-fracture surgery to examine the factors correlated with dysphagia, severity of dysphagia and the incidence of dysphagia in a regional setting. DESIGN: This prospective cohort study replicates Love et al's (2013, Age Ageing, 42:782) and compares the studies' results. Participants were assessed for dysphagia within 72 hours post hip-fracture surgery. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the incidence
