The title compound, [Cd(S(2)O(3))(C(16)H(16)N(2))(H(2)O)](n), presents a polymeric one-dimensional structure running along the P2(1)/c glide direction, with elementary units defined by six-coordinate Cd(II) atoms bonded to three symmetry-related thiosulfate groups, a bidentate tetramethylphenanthroline ligand and one aqua ligand. The bridging thiosulfates bind metal centers through two different sequences, viz. Cd-S-Cd' and Cd'-S'-S'-O'-Cd, defining a closed six-membered ring. Individual chains are held together via pi-pi interactions to generate two-dimensional networks parallel to the (100) …

The combination of cobalt salts and oxygen with the traditional sodium nitrite-sodium thiosulfate antidote may have value as cyanide antidotes. Results reported previously in mice were extended to sheep in the present experiments. Cobaltous chloride (15 mg/kg of body weight) or oxygen with or without sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate were compared with respect to the median lethal dose of oral sodium cyanide. Although cobaltous chloride or oxygen used alone did result in a significant increase in the median lethal dose of sodium cyanide in sheep, the protection was minor compared with the

Anaerobic fermentation (AF) has been identified as a promising method of transforming waste activated sludge (WAS) into high-value products (e.g., short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)). This study developed thiosulfate/FeCl3 pre-treatment and investigated the effects of different thiosulfate/FeCl3 ratios (S:Fe = 3:1, 3:2, 1:1, 3:4 and 3:5) on SCFA production and sulfur transformation during the AF of WAS. At a S:Fe ratio of 1:1, the maximal SCFA yield (933.3 mg COD/L) and efficient H2S removal (96.5 %) were obtained. S:Fe ratios ≤ 1:1 not only benefited hydrolysis and acidification but largely miti

Attempts were made to evaluate the effects of pretreatment with air and oxygen either alone or in various combinations with sodium nitrite and/or sodium thiosulfate on the physiological disposition of 14C-labeled sodium cyanide in mice. The radioactive respiratory excretion was studied by radiorespirometry, and the effects of various combinations of cyanide antagonists were compared. Oxygen either alone or in combination with sodium thiosulfate significantly enhanced the respiratory excretion when compared with air. Sodium thiosulfate accelerated the initial rate, but not the total amount of r

The reaction between bovine rhodanese (thiosulfate:cyanide sulfurtransferase, EC 2.8.1.1) and reduced dithiothreitol has been studied. This reagent, in the absence of thiosulfate, reduces the amount of sulfur carried by rhodanese with formation of sulfide and oxidized dithiothreitol: E-S-SH + reduced dithiothreitol replaced by E-SH + HS- + oxidized dithiothreitol, (E = enzyme). An inactivation was observed at high dithiothreitol/enzyme ratios or at very low enzyme concentrations. The inactivation was not observed in the presence of thiosulfate and can be reversed by cyanide or thiosulfate. A t

Calcium polysulfide (CPS) has been observed to maintain a reducing capacity for prolonged time periods when used to treat Cr(VI)-contaminated soils. This study utilized bulk and micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to investigate sulfur speciation in soil samples treated with CPS in batch and column studies and to determine the source of the reducing potential. Bulk XANES spectra indicated the presence of two dominant sulfur species: elemental sulfur, which is the product of the sulfide-chromate redox reaction, and thiosulfate (S2O3(2-)). Micro-XANES analyses confirm

A laboratory-scale well-mixed thermostatic reactor with continuously blasting air was used to investigate the oxidation inhibition of sulfite in dual alkali flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. The effects of operating parameters such as pH value and catalyst concentration on the oxidation were studied. Sodium thiosulfate was used in the system, and was found that it significantly inhabited the sulfite oxidation. In the absence of catalyst, sodium thiosulfate at 12.67 mmol/L had an inhibition efficiency of approximately 98%. While in the presence of catalyst, sodium thiosulfate at 26.72 mmol

Protection against convulsions induced by cyanide was observed after treatment with alpha-ketoglutarate, either alone or in combination with sodium thiosulfate, a classical antagonist for cyanide intoxication. However, sodium thiosulfate alone did not protect against cyanide (30 mg/kg)-induced convulsions. gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in brain were decreased by 31% in KCN-treated mice exhibiting convulsions. The combined administration of alpha-ketoglutarate and sodium thiosulfate completely abolished the decrease of GABA levels induced by cyanide. Furthermore, sodium thiosulfate alon

Various cyanide antidotes were evaluated by comparing the effects of delay in time of therapy following oral administration of sodium cyanide in sheep. Successful therapy of lethal doses of sodium cyanide could be accomplished with the more potent antidotes for up to 30 minutes following administration of sodium cyanide. Either 660 mg/kg sodium thiosulfate or 1 mg/kg p-aminopropriophenone were effective antidotes for moderate lethal doses (7.6 mg/kg) of sodium cyanide. The conventional low dosage nitrite/thiosulfate (6.7 mg/kg and 67 mg/kg) was much less effective. Larger doses (15.2 mg/kg) of

A dramatic response was noted in a patient at our hospital who received hemodialysis therapy for severe acidosis secondary to an unknown toxin, subsequently identified as cyanide. We were unable to find any information concerning the hemodialysis clearance and extraction ratio of cyanide; thus, we studied the effect of hemodialysis in dogs receiving a constant infusion of cyanide with and without a simultaneous infusion of thiosulfate. The hemodialysis clearance of cyanide in the presence of thiosulfate was 38.3 +/- 5.4 ml/min with an extraction ratio of 0.43 +/- 0.06 (n = 4). Hemodialysis was

Acute acetonitrile toxicity is mainly dependent on the release of cyanide via hepatic metabolism. Although evaluated in animals, few data are available concerning the toxicokinetic parameters of acetonitrile and acetonitrile-liberated cyanide in human. This paper reports a case of suicidal oral acetonitrile ingestion of about 5 mL without severe symptoms of intoxication in a previously healthy adult male with a body weight of 60 kg. Acetonitrile serum concentrations as well as cyanide blood levels were determined over the whole hospitalization. The elimination half-lives calculated from these

It has been reported that compounds containing carbonyl groups can readily react with cyanide. Pyruvic acid, an alpha-ketocarboxylic acid, has been shown to antagonize the lethal effects of cyanide. It is suggested that its mechanism of action rests in its ability to react with or "bind" cyanide. In this study, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, also an alpha-ketocarboxylic acid, was evaluated for its ability to counteract the lethal effects of cyanide. alpha-Ketoglutaric acid increased the LD50 value of cyanide (6.7 mg/kg) by a factor of five, a value statistically equivalent to that ascertained in mic

Aims: Thiosulfate and sulfate are metabolites of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule with cardiovascular (CV) protective properties. Urinary thiosulfate excretion and sulfate excretion are associated with favorable disease outcome in high-risk patient groups. We investigated the relationship between urinary excretion of sulfur metabolites, and risk of CV events and all-cause mortality in the general population. Results: Subjects (n = 6839) of the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease (PREVEND) study were followed prospectively. At baseline, 24-h urinary excretion

OBJECTIVES: Sodium thiosulfate (STS) has recently been approved as an otoprotectant for systemic use in pediatric cancer patients receiving cisplatin treatment for localized, nonmetastatic solid tumors by the Food and Drug Administration, European Medicines Agency, and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. While incorporating STS into the current standard of care pediatric practice, questions about uniform, timely, and safe administration are raised that may benefit from additional guidance.
DESIGN: Recognizing that advancing clinical practice presents multiple challenges, an i

Cyanide intoxication in mice can be antagonized by the opiate antagonist, (-)naloxone HCl, alone or in combination with sodium thiosulfate and/or sodium nitrite. Potency ratios, derived from LD50 values, were compared in groups of mice pretreated with sodium nitrite (sc, 100 mg/kg), sodium thiosulfate (ip, 1 g/kg), and (-)naloxone HCl (sc, 10 mg/kg) either alone or in various combinations. These results indicate that naloxone HCl provides a significant protection against the lethal effects of potassium cyanide. The protective effect of sodium thiosulfate, but not sodium nitrite, was enhanced w

Chemolithotrophic sulfur oxidation represents a significant part of the biogeochemical cycling of this element. Due to its long evolutionary history, this ancient metabolism is well known for its extensive mechanistic and phylogenetic diversification across a diverse taxonomic spectrum. Here we carried out whole-genome sequencing and analysis of a new betaproteobacterial isolate, Pusillimonas ginsengisoli SBSA, which is found to oxidize thiosulfate via the formation of tetrathionate as an intermediate. The 4.7 Mb SBSA genome was found to encompass a soxCDYZAXOB operon, plus single thiosulfate

Resealed erythrocytes containing sodium thiosulfate and rhodanese (CRBC) are being employed as a new approach in the antagonism of cyanide intoxication. In earlier in vitro studies, the behavior of red blood cells containing rhodanese and sodium thiosulfate was investigated with regard to their properties and their capability of metabolizing cyanide to thiocyanate. The present studies are concerned with the properties of these rhodanese-containing carrier erythrocytes in the intact animal. These carrier erythrocytes were administered intravenously and the survival of the encapsulated enzyme wa
