mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine safety and COVID-19 risk perception in recently transplanted allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.

PURPOSE: This study aims to describe the incidence and severity of adverse events (AEs) following the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and explore the risk perception of COVID-19 in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients. METHODS: We performed a single-center prospective study including recently transplanted (< 2 years post-infusion) allogeneic HCT recipients. AEs were assessed through phone calls and graded from 0 to 4, while COVID-19 risk perception was measured using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIP-Q5). RESULTS: Fifty-four HCT recipients were evaluated.

Sub-second timing irregularities in a simple motor task in autism spectrum disorder: Preliminary effects of intermittent light stimulation.

Several authors have contributed extensively to the neurocognitive understanding of timing. In Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on the contrary, internal timing and its functioning is not well understood. In this study, we have adapted a simple finger-tapping motor task, with a timing component, as we aim at understanding whether the processing of time is preserved in this population. We have tested a group of people on the autism spectrum without intellectual disabilities and a control sample recruited from the general population, matched for age, sex, schooling and general cognitive abilities

Attention capture by brief abrupt-onset cues in deaf individuals.

Auditory loss in deaf individuals has been associated with an enhancement in the visual modality. Visual attention is one domain where such plasticity-induced changes have been observed, although which specific attentional mechanisms are improved is still not clear. Using a modified spatial cueing paradigm, we examined attention capture in deaf and normal-hearing participants. Brief abrupt-onset cues were presented for 16 ms either in attended or ignored locations. The to-be-attended locations for each trial were indicated by a horizontal or a vertical bar at the centre of the screen. These we

Noise and adaptation in multistable perception: noise drives when to switch, adaptation determines percept choice.

We study the dynamics of perceptual switching in ambiguous visual scenes that admit more than two interpretations/percepts to gain insight into the dynamics of perceptual multistability and its underlying neural mechanisms. We focus on visual plaids that are tristable and we present both experimental and computational results. We develop a firing-rate model based on mutual inhibition and adaptation that involves stochastic dynamics of multiple-attractor systems. The model can account for the dynamic properties (transition probabilities, distributions of percept durations, etc.) observed in the

Assessing the Geographic Context of Risk Perception and Behavioral Response to Potential Ebola Exposure.

The 2014⁻2016 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic outbreak reached over 28,000 cases and totaled over 11,000 deaths with 4 confirmed cases in the United States, which sparked widespread public concern about nationwide spread of EVD. Concern was elevated in locations connected to the infected people, which included Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. This threat of exposure enabled a unique opportunity to assess self-reported knowledge about EVD, risk perception, and behavior response to EVD. Unlike existing studies, which often survey one point in time across geographically coarse scales, this

Interaction of numerosity and time in prefrontal and parietal cortex.

It has been proposed that numerical and temporal information are processed by partially overlapping magnitude systems. Interactions across different magnitude domains could occur both at the level of perception and decision-making. However, their neural correlates have been elusive. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging in humans, we show that the right intraparietal cortex (IPC) and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) are jointly activated by duration and numerosity discrimination tasks, with a congruency effect in the right IFG. To determine whether the IPC and the IFG are involved in r

Distinct Oscillatory Frequencies Underlie Excitability of Human Occipital and Parietal Cortex.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of human occipital and posterior parietal cortex can give rise to visual sensations called phosphenes. We used near-threshold TMS with concurrent EEG recordings to measure how oscillatory brain dynamics covary, on single trials, with the perception of phosphenes after occipital and parietal TMS. Prestimulus power and phase, predominantly in the alpha band (8-13 Hz), predicted occipital TMS phosphenes, whereas higher-frequency beta-band (13-20 Hz) power (but not phase) predicted parietal TMS phosphenes. TMS-evoked responses related to phosphene perception

Flexible, abstract rhythm perception in bumble bees.

Flexible, abstract rhythm perception underpins human music, dance, and speech, but thus far, it has only been demonstrated in a few birds and mammals. In this work, we show that bumble bees also form robust abstract rhythm representations. Free-flying bees learned to discriminate two arbitrary repeating flashing light sequences, balanced to preclude the use of any local cues. Bees successfully recognized these learned rhythmic patterns at new, faster, and slower tempi. Bees trained on vibrational patterns transferred their learning to equivalent flashing light patterns, demonstrating cross-mod

[Time and the depressive subject].

Dealing with the diseased man means dealing with man, and whether his disease be organic or psychic, this disease is, first and foremost, a human affliction imposed by life. Any attempt at understanding this affliction should first answer the question of what "being a man" signifies. When Nietzsche writes that man is an animal "not yet established", "an afflicted animal", one may understand that man is afflicted by himself and that he is not a man in the way a thing is a thing. Our approach is based on a phenomenology of existence which focuses on the style of existence of the concrete individ

Differences between Dyslexic and Non-Dyslexic Children in the Performance of Phonological Visual-Auditory Recognition Tasks: An Eye-Tracking Study.

The object of this study was to explore further phonological visual-auditory recognition tasks in a group of fifty-six healthy children (mean age: 9.9 ± 0.3) and to compare these data to those recorded in twenty-six age-matched dyslexic children (mean age: 9.8 ± 0.2). Eye movements from both eyes were recorded using an infrared video-oculography system (MobileEBT® e(y)e BRAIN). The recognition task was performed under four conditions in which the target object was displayed either with phonologically unrelated objects (baseline condition), or with cohort or rhyme objects (cohort and rhyme cond

Deficits in temporal-order judgments in dyslexia: evidence from diotic stimuli differing spectrally and from dichotic stimuli differing only by perceived location.

The main debate concerning dyslexia focuses on the question of whether dyslexia is a language-specific disorder or a general nervous system dysfunction manifested in deficits of temporal processing. According to the temporal-order deficit hypothesis, dyslexia manifests difficulty in discriminating the temporal order of stimuli. Evidence has usually involved testing the ability to discriminate series of phonemes or pure tones whose components are separated by very short intervals. One of the difficulties in interpreting the data is the confound of changes in the spectrum with changes in tempora

Anticholinergic effects on memory: benztropine versus amantadine.

To evaluate anticholinergic effects on cognition and other functions, we studied 60 healthy volunteers in a double-blind crossover trial of two antiparkinsonian agents, benztropine and amantadine. Benztropine 4 mg/day, but not amantadine 200 mg/day, impaired free recall and perception of time, and subjects' perception of their own memory impairment was significantly greater with benztropine. Side effects in general were worse with benztropine, particularly such anticholinergic effects as dry mouth and blurred vision, and benztropine decreased measured salivary flow to a significantly greater d

Multi-modal imaging of the auditory-larynx motor network for voicing perception.

Voicing is one of the most important characteristics of phonetic speech sounds. Despite its importance, voicing perception mechanisms remain largely unknown. To explore auditory-motor networks associated with voicing perception, we firstly examined the brain regions that showed common activities for voicing production and perception using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results indicated that the auditory and speech motor areas were activated with the operculum parietale 4 (OP4) during both voicing production and perception. Secondly, we used a magnetoencephalography and examined the dy

Temporal discrimination threshold and blink reflex recovery cycle in cervical dystonia - two sides of the same coin?

INTRODUCTION: Elevated temporal discrimination thresholds (TDT) have been found in cervical dystonia (CD) and unaffected first-degree relatives, indicating autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance, serving as an endophenotype and being indicative of abnormal inhibitory processing within the brainstem-basal ganglia circuits. The blink reflex R2 recovery cycle (BRRC) is also a measure of excitability of brainstem-basal ganglia circuits, and inconsistent findings are reported in CD. The aim was to investigate TDT and BRRC in CD and evaluate its reliability as an endophenotype. METH

Prospective versus predictive control in timing of hitting a falling ball.

Debate exists as to whether humans use prospective or predictive control to intercept an object falling under gravity (Baurès et al. in Vis Res 47:2982-2991, 2007; Zago et al. in Vis Res 48:1532-1538, 2008). Prospective control involves using continuous information to regulate action. τ, the ratio of the size of the gap to the rate of gap closure, has been proposed as the information used in guiding interceptive actions prospectively (Lee in Ecol Psychol 10:221-250, 1998). This form of control is expected to generate movement modulation, where variability decreases over the course of an action

Auditory temporal processing deficit in dyslexia is associated with enhanced sensitivity in the visual modality.

Developmental dyslexia has been associated with a deficit in temporal processing, but it is controversial whether the postulated deficit is pansensory or limited to the auditory modality. We present psychophysical assessment data of auditory and visual temporal processing abilities in children with dyslexia. While none of the dyslexic children displayed temporal processing abnormalities in the visual sensory modality, dyslexics with poor auditory temporal scores reached high-level visual performance. Our results do not confirm the hypothesis of a general temporal processing deficit for dyslexi

Reduction of the flash-lag effect in terms of active observation.

In the present study, we investigated how observers' control of stimulus change affects temporal and spatial aspects of visual perception. We compared the illusory flash-lag effects for automatic movement of the stimulus with stimulus movement that was controlled by the observers' active manipulation of a computer mouse (Experiments 1, 2, and 5), a keyboard (Experiment 3), or a trackball (Experiment 4). We found that the flash-lag effect was significantly reduced when the observer was familiar with the directional relationship between the mouse movement and stimulus movement on a front paralle

Phantom limb perception interferes with motor imagery after unilateral upper-limb amputation.

A potential contributor to impaired motor imagery in amputees is an alteration of the body schema as a result of the presence of a phantom limb. However, the nature of the relationship between motor imagery and phantom experiences remains unknown. In this study, the influence of phantom limb perception on motor imagery was investigated using a hand mental rotation task by means of behavioral and electrophysiological measures. Compared with healthy controls, significantly prolonged response time for both the intact and missing hand were observed specifically in amputees who perceived a phantom
