BACKGROUND: Collagen deposition disorders such as hypertrophic scars, keloids and scleroderma can be associated with significant stigma and embarrassment. These disorders often constitute considerable impairment to quality of life, with treatment posing to be a substantial challenge. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides a non-invasive, easily applicable bedside optical imaging method for assessment of the skin. It is hypothesized that OCT imaging may be useful in assessing fibrosis to avoid additional biopsies that could potentially worsen the scarring.
METHOD: Thirty-three patients wi

High-definition optical coherence tomography (HD-OCT) scanners have recently been developed. We assessed micromorphological HD-OCT correlates of benign naevi (BN) and malignant melanoma (MM). 28 BN and 20 MM were studied using HD-OCT and histology. Epidermal honeycomb/cobblestone pattern, regular junctional cell nests, and edged papillae are more often observed in BN, whereas fusion of rete ridges, pagetoid cells and junctional and/or dermal nests with atypical cells are more frequently seen in MM. A high overlap of HD-OCT features in BN and MM was observed and in 20% of MM we did not find evi

PURPOSE: To examine retinal and choroidal blood vessels using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Scans through retinal blood vessels in healthy subjects demonstrated vessel wall reflexes and a tri-layer profile of the blood column on longitudinal scans and a figure-of-eight configuration on cross-sectional scans. Intravascular reflectivity decreased with increasingly oblique angles of observation and was absent when blood flow was parallel to the line of sight. The high blood flow in the choroidal vessels in healthy subjects an

The authors describe a rare artifact on two different spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems and explain its origin in patient- rather than hardware-related errors. During evaluation on spectral-domain OCT, four patients registered twin foveal depressions on the retinal thickness map display and were initially unable to fixate on the given target. Repeat scans on the same OCT system without changing scan protocol demonstrated no artifact after the patients began to fixate well, except in one patient who had nystagmus. Fundus and autofluorescence evaluation revealed no true

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high resolution imaging technique that offers microscopic visualization of the coronary artery. The fast scanning speed and simple imaging procedure of new-generation frequency-domain OCT make this technology easy to use in the clinical setting. The OCT examination is useful for guidance and risk stratification of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). OCT-derived thin-cap fibroatheroma, which is characterized by large lipid-core and thin fibrous cap <65 μm, is a predictor of peri-PCI complications, such as angiographic no-reflow, microvascular obstru

DESIGN: Retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred consecutive keratoconus patients.
INTERVENTION: Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty was performed using the big-bubble technique. During surgery, the cannula used for pneumatic dissection was inse

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to axonal dysfunction and neuronal loss and often presents optic neuritis (ON). Decreased thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is a classic finding on ophthalmoscopic examination of patients with MS and especially noted in those patients with a history of ON. The thickness of the RNFL can be measured by a non-invasive technique, optical coherence tomography (OCT).
AREAS COVERED: This review will cover the history and development of the OCT technology and the advantages of a potential

BACKGROUND: Advances in optic nerve and retinal imaging have dramatically changed the care of glaucoma patients, complementing the importance of the clinical exam of the optic nerve and automated perimetry in making the diagnosis of glaucoma. Computerized imaging, however, does not replace the clinical exam, as there can be overlap in the appearance of non-glaucomatous optic neuropathies with glaucoma.
METHODS: The spectral domain optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images of five patients with non-glaucomatous optic nerve pathology are presented.
CASES: The first patient had bilateral tempo

CASE REPORT: A 17 year-old female presented with a bilateral and acute visual loss. On ophthalmoscopic examination, there was a subfoveal deposit with a vitelliform appearance. Optical coherence tomography revealed a hyperreflective and homogeneous material located at the photoreceptor external segment layer. A month later, vision had spontaneously recovered and macular appearance was normalised. On tomography, the subretinal material had completely disappeared.
DISCUSSION: Acute retinal pigment epitheliitis is a rare condition that usually causes a transient visual loss, with a good prognosi

An eight-year-old boy presented with decreased vision in both eyes. At presentation, the visual acuity was 6/60 in both eyes with high plus spheres. Anterior segment examination was normal. Fundus examination and spectral domain optical coherence tomography were consistent with posterior microphthalmos and showed an elevated foveal contour and fold in the outer plexiform layer. External limiting membrane, photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelium were not involved in the fold. To the best of our knowledge this is the first such case report with optical coherence tomography imaging of the re

A 36-year-old female followed with the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus complained of bilateral visual loss. Ophthalmological examination revealed disc edema with irregular borders, edematous and pale retina with widespread cotton wool spots, intraretinal hemorrhages and serous retinal detachment in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans showed intraretinal and subretinal fluid creating cystic cavities with central subfield macular thickness values of 994 and 912( )µm in the right and left eye, respectively. The follow-up scans after the treatment with systemic steroid, a

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to compare the optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters of the optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and to identify which measurements are best able to differentiate between normal and glaucoma suspect eyes.
METHODS: The study included 27 eyes with ocular hypertension (OHT), 33 eyes with pre-perimetric glaucoma (PG), 30 perimetrically unaffected eyes of patients with glaucoma in the fellow eye (FE) and 58 eyes of age-matched normal volunteers. All subjects underwent a complete eye examination with standard automated perimetry, opti

The sympathetic ophthalmia is a granulomatous panuveitis that starts after ocular trauma. The prognosis is poor and depends of both early diagnosis and treatment. The authors describe one case of a patient with sympathetic ophthalmia using optical coherence tomography who was submitted to early treatment, and it suggests that the optical coherence tomography can corroborate as a ancillary method in the study of retina characteristics in sympathetic ophthalmia disease specially in cases of rare presentation, with serous retinal detachment as an isolated ophthalmological manifestation.

OBJECTIVES: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging modality that uses a broadband light source to produce high-resolution cross-sectional images in living tissue (8-20 microm). A prospective study of normal, benign, and pathologic tissues in the pediatric airway was conducted to assess the utility of OCT technology in characterizing the microanatomy of the pediatric upper aerodigestive tract in vivo.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients from 1 to 17 years of age underwent surgical endoscopy and OCT for various airway disorders. OCT imagi
