Prevalence of endoparasitic infections of birds in zoo gardens in Serbia.

This report represents the prevalence of endoparasitic infections of birds in zoological gardens in Serbia. Coprological examination conducted during 2015 and 2016, involved samples from 318 individual birds belonging to 112 species, in three zoo gardens (Belgrade, Palić and Bor). Individual faeces samples were analysed by the flotation method in salt solution. The presence of endoparasites was established in 51.96% (Belgrade), 46.16% (Palić) and 16.66% (Bor) of the tested birds. We diagnosed coccidian oocysts, eggs of Capillaria spp, Heterakis spp, Trichostrongylus spp, Ascaridia spp, Syngamu

Development and evaluation of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of Opisthorchis viverrini in fish.

Human opisthorchiais caused by the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is a major fish-borne trematode infection endemic in the Southeast Asian countries. The infection is acquired through consumption of raw fish harboring metacercariae of O. viverrini. Owing to potential risk of transmission of opisthorchiasis through fish trade, rapid and reliable detection methods have gained importance to ensure food safety. In the study described here, we report successful development and evaluation of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of O. viverrini, based on the nucleotide sequen

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF TWO SPECIES OF TREMATODE PARASITES OF AMERICAN MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS) AND THEIR POSSIBLE ROLE AS BIO-INDICATORS OF HOST DISTRIBUTION AND DIET.

Sirenians comprise manatees and dugongs, which host various parasites that cause little or no pathology. Parasitological studies have recommended using Chiorchis spp. as bio-indicators of population distribution. American manatees (Trichechus manatus) live in varied environments (marine, estuarine, fluvial, and lake). However, their relationship to their environment and feeding habits, and thus how it relates to their internal parasites, has yet to be studied. We sought to identify Chiorchis spp. through molecular analysis in manatees from different areas of the Caribbean. A ribosomal RNA 18S

Invasion biology meets parasitology: a case study of parasite spill-back with Egyptian Fasciola gigantica in the invasive snail Pseudosuccinea columella.

The liver fluke Fasciola gigantica is a trematode parasite of ruminants and humans that occurs naturally in Africa and Asia. Cases of human fascioliasis, attributable at least in part to F. gigantica, are significantly increasing in the last decades. The introduced snail species Galba truncatula was already identified to be an important intermediate host for this parasite and the efficient invader Pseudosuccinea columella is another suspect in this case. Therefore, we investigated snails collected in irrigation canals in Fayoum governorate in Egypt for prevalence of trematodes with focus on P.

First Molecular Identification of Cotylophoron cotylophorum in Ecuador and Its Phylogenetic Relationship with Fasciola hepatica.

Trematode infections caused by Fasciolidae and Paramphistomidae remain widespread in livestock, resulting in substantial economic losses. The two distinct fluke families are difficult to distinguish morphologically, and molecular identification provides the most reliable means of accurate diagnosis. In Ecuador, however, molecular data on these parasites are scarce. In this study, we collected trematodes from cattle rumen and bile ducts, molecularly identified them, and assessed their phylogenetic relationship to Fasciola hepatica to determine their introduction pathways into South America. Gen…

Comparative recruitment, morphology and reproduction of a generalist trematode, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, in three species of host.

Epidemiological rate parameters of host generalist parasites are difficult to estimate, especially in cases where variation in parasite performance can be attributed to host species. Such cases are likely common for generalist parasites of sympatric grazing mammals. In this study, we combined data from experimental exposures in cattle and sheep and natural infections in elk to compare the recruitment, morphology and reproduction of adult Dicrocoelium dendriticum, a generalist trematode that has emerged in sympatric grazing hosts in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Alberta. Overall, there were no

Novel and selective inactivators of Triosephosphate isomerase with anti-trematode activity.

Trematode infections such as schistosomiasis and fascioliasis cause significant morbidity in an estimated 250 million people worldwide and the associated agricultural losses are estimated at more than US$ 6 billion per year. Current chemotherapy is limited. Triosephosphate isomerase (TIM), an enzyme of the glycolytic pathway, has emerged as a useful drug target in many parasites, including Fasciola hepatica TIM (FhTIM). We identified 21 novel compounds that selectively inhibit this enzyme. Using microscale thermophoresis we explored the interaction between target and compounds and identified a…

Helminth infections in chickens (Gallus domesticus) raised in different production systems in Brazil.

The current study evaluated helminth infections in birds raised in different production systems for different purposes (extensive/dual-purpose, semi-intensive/broiler, semi-intensive/hen, intensive/hen and intensive/broiler) in Brazil. A total of 374 birds was assessed for helminths at necropsy using standard parasitological methods. During the necropsies, organs from the gastrointestinal tract (crop, esophagus, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine and ceca) of each bird were collected and the contents fixed in 70% ethanol. Additionally, the trachea and eyes were assessed

Contribution to the knowledge of infectivity of Fasciola hepatica adolescariae after their passage through the digestive tract of white mice.

The study of infective elements of Fasciola hepatica which passed through the digestive tract of white mice revealed that those adolescariae (transitive adolescariae) (Table 1), which were not visibly damaged or possessed a more or less digested outer cyst wall, remained infective. The mice infected with transitive adolescariae harboured higher number of trematodes in the livers than those infected with infective elements which had not previously passed through the digestive tract of the definitive host.

Introducing the land snail Bradybaena pellucida increased infection risk of the avian parasite Postharmostomum commutatum in the Kanto region of Japan.

The trematode Postharmostomum commutatum is a parasite of the chicken Gallus gallus domesticus. Its heavy infection can cause inflammation and hemorrhage in the cecum of host birds. We found a severe infection of metacercariae of P. commutatum, which was identified based on DNA barcodes with morphology, in the introduced land snail Bradybaena pellucida and its related species in the Kanto region of Japan. Our field survey revealed that metacercariae were detected in 14 of 69 sampling locations in this region. B. pellucida was thought to be the major second intermediate host of metacercariae of

How Temperature, Pond-Drying, and Nutrients Influence Parasite Infection and Pathology.

The rapid pace of environmental change is driving multi-faceted shifts in abiotic factors that influence parasite transmission. However, cumulative effects of these factors on wildlife diseases remain poorly understood. Here we used an information-theoretic approach to compare the relative influence of abiotic factors (temperature, diurnal temperature range, nutrients and pond-drying), on infection of snail and amphibian hosts by two trematode parasites (Ribeiroia ondatrae and Echinostoma spp.). A temperature shift from 20 to 25 °C was associated with an increase in infected snail prevalence o

Foodborne trematodes: old foes, new kids on the block and research perspectives for control and understanding host-parasite interactions.

Foodborne trematodes (FBTs) have a worldwide distribution (with particular prevalence in south-east Asia) and are believed to infect almost 75 million people, with millions more living at risk of infection. Although mortality due to trematodiasis is low, these infections cause considerable morbidity and some species are associated with the development of cancer in hyperendemic regions. Despite this, FBTs are often side-lined in terms of research funding and have been dubbed neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organisation. Thus, the aim of this special issue was to provide an updat

Time-Course Study of the Transcriptome of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) from Sheep Infected with Fasciola hepatica.

Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic trematode that infects a wide range of mammalian hosts, including livestock and humans, in temperate and tropical regions globally. This trematode causes the disease fascioliasis, which consists of an acute phase (≤ 12 weeks) during which juvenile parasites migrate through the host liver tissues, and a chronic phase (> 12 weeks) following the establishment of adult parasites in the liver bile ducts. Few studies have explored the progression of the host response over the course of Fasciola infection in the same animals. In this study, we characterized transcript

[Parasite infections: schistosomiasis and echinococcosis].

Current situations of schistosomiasis and echinococcosis as re-emerging helminthic infec- tions are reported. Because of their relatively complicated life-cycles, those infections are in- fluenced and drifted by social and/or natural changed. Schistosomiasis is a trematode infec- tion, for which snails are needed as intermediate hosts in the life-cycle, therefore, endemic situation of schistosomiasis reflect ecological condition of their intermediate snail hosts. Current changes in the global environmental and/or climate conditions affect distribution of snail hosts, and subsequently, schistos

Evaluation of praziquantel effects on Echinostoma paraensei ultrastructure.

Echinostomiasis is a food-borne, intestinal, zoonotic, snail-mediated helminthiasis caused by digenean trematodes of the family Echinostomatidae with seven species of the genus Echinostoma infecting humans or domestic and wildlife animals. Echinostoma paraensei is a peristomic 37-collar-spined echinostome belonging to the "revolutum group". Praziquantel (PZQ) is the drug of choice for treatment and control of human schistosomiasis and food-borne trematodiasis. In the present study we used scanning and transmission electron microscopy to further elucidate the trematocidal effect of PZQ on adult

Transcriptome analysis reveals significant discrepancies between two in vitro models of host-trematode interaction.

Cell models emulating an in vitro parasitic infection can greatly improve our understanding of helminthiases. Nonetheless, it remains challenging to select an appropriate in vitro model to study molecular pathogenesis of infections by trematodes having a complex life cycle. Therefore, adequate models are in high demand. The epidemiologically important foodborne trematode Opisthorchis felineus parasitizes bile ducts of fish-eating mammals, including humans. The human infection leads to chronic inflammation and biliary intraepithelial neoplasia, which is considered precancerous. This study was a

Cercarial infection is associated with shifts in culturable gut bacterial communities of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos.

This study investigated the diversity of culturable bacteria in the gut of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, the first intermediate host of trematode parasites. It examined the relationship between bacterial communities and trematode infection. Snails were collected from freshwater habitats in Udon Thani and Khon Kaen provinces, Thailand, and classified as infected or uninfected using the cercarial shedding method. A total of 132 bacterial isolates were obtained and identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Bacterial abundance differed significantly between the two groups, with higher count
