An Unusual Ocular Manifestation of Disseminated Tuberculosis: Combined Retinal Vascular Occlusion Inducing Acute Loss of Vision.

Disseminated tuberculosis (TB) is a life-threatening disease caused by the hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Acute loss of vision as a symptom of disseminated TB is uncommon, as per the literature. Uveitis is the most common ocular manifestation of TB, and tubercular retinal arterial or venous occlusion, with or without ocular signs, has been rarely described before. We discuss the case of a 34-year-old truck driver who presented with fever, cough, and sudden painless loss of vision in the right eye. Examination revealed optic neuropathy, as well as central retinal artery and

Local ischemia and increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor following ocular dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The pathogenesis of intraocular tuberculosis remains poorly understood partly due to the lack of adequate animal models that accurately simulate human disease. Using a recently developed model of ocular tuberculosis following aerosol infection of guinea pigs with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, we studied the microbiological, histological, and clinical features of intraocular tuberculosis infection. Viable tubercle bacilli were cultivated from all eyes by Day 56 after aerosol delivery of ∼200 bacilli to guinea pig lungs. Choroidal tuberculous granulomas showed reduced oxygen tension, as evidenced

Mycobacterium tuberculosis does not show evidence of molecular DNA in human cadaveric ocular tissues in an endemic setting.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in latent infection has been demonstrated in pulmonary/extra-pulmonary locations (lung, spleen, liver, kidney, adipose tissue) in autopsy studies, but its presence in ocular tissues in the latent state is not known. METHODS: We conducted molecular and histopathological study of 100 cadaver eyes (50 humans) who died from causes other than tuberculosis (TB) (and were potential candidates for corneal transplantation) to detect MTB in ocular tissues in an endemic setting. After removal of the corneal button, an 8 to 10 mm block of tissue (choroid, reti
