[Evaluation of a new method for detection of obstructive disease in children asthma: the negative expiratory pressure (NEP)].

INTRODUCTION: To take in charge of an asthmatic child it is necessary to evaluate the lung function. METHODS: In this study, the Negative Expiratory Pressure (NEP) has been used for the first time in children with asthma. After lung spirometry by plethysmography, we have used the NEP to assess the prevalence of expiratory flow limitation (FL) during resting breath in 27 asthmatic children (mean age: 11 +/- 2,5 years) 3-4 days after a crisis in both sitting and supine positions. RESULTS: All the children presented an obstructive defect (FEV 1: 63 +/- 13% med) and a dynamic hyperinflation (FRC

Changes in respiratory physiological dead space and compliance during non-abdominal, upper abdominal and lower abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the temporal changes in respiratory physiological dead space and dynamic compliance of the respiratory system during non-abdominal, upper abdominal and lower abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia with intermittent positive pressure ventilation. METHODS: Thirty-four adult patients were studied (non-abdominal surgery, n = 8; upper abdominal surgery, n = 13 and lower abdominal surgery in lithotomy position, n = 13). Physiological dead space was measured using the single breath carbon dioxide test. The physiological dead space to tidal volume ratio (VD/

Paratracheal Paraseptal Emphysema and Expiratory Central Airway Collapse in Smokers.

RATIONALE: Expiratory central airway collapse is associated with respiratory morbidity independent of underlying lung disease. However, not all smokers develop expiratory central airway collapse, and the etiology of expiratory central airway collapse in adult smokers is unclear. Paraseptal emphysema in the paratracheal location, by untethering airway walls, may predispose smokers to developing expiratory central airway collapse. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether paratracheal paraseptal emphysema is associated with expiratory central airway collapse. METHODS: We analyzed paired inspiratory and

Computed Tomography Findings of Bronchiectasis in Different Respiratory Phases Correlate with Pulmonary Function Test Data in Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate bronchiectasis variations in different computed tomography (CT) respiratory phases, and their correlation with pulmonary function test (PFT) data, in adults. METHODS: Retrospective data analysis from 63 patients with bronchiectasis according to CT criteria selected from the institution database and for whom PFT data were also available. Bronchiectasis diameter was measured on inspiratory and expiratory phases. Its area and matched airway-vessel ratios in both phases were also calculated. Finally, PFT results were compared with radiological measurements. RESULTS: Bro

The effects of breath-holding on pulmonary regurgitation measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance velocity mapping.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary regurgitation is a common and clinically important residual lesion after repair of tetralogy of Fallot. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) phase contrast velocity mapping is widely used for measurement of pulmonary regurgitant fraction. Breath-hold acquisitions, usually acquired during held expiration, are more convenient than the non-breath-hold approach, but we hypothesized that breath-holding might affect the amount of pulmonary regurgitation. METHODS: Forty-three adult patients with a previous repair of tetralogy of Fallot and residual pulmonary regurgitation we

Development and internal validation of the NOTICE assessment as a non-biological measure of prenatal nicotine, tobacco, and cannabis use and exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate measurement of tobacco, nicotine and cannabis use and exposure during pregnancy is essential for research and clinical care, yet existing perinatal surveillance relies on simplified self-report that inadequately captures exposure patterns. Biological assays provide objective measurement but are invasive, costly, limited to short detection windows, and impractical for repeated or population-level use. This study aimed to develop and internally validate the Nicotine, Tobacco and Cannabis Use and Exposure (NOTICE) assessment as a low-burden, non-biological behavioural tool fo

Can we assess exercise metabolism from skin? Metabolomic profiles in skin dialysate collected during exercise.

Monitoring exercise intensity is essential for optimizing the health benefits of physical activity. Indirect calorimetry is the gold-standard method for assessing metabolic stress during exercise, though its reliance on extensive equipment for sampling and analyzing exhaled gases restricts its widespread application. Skin interstitial fluid may represent an ideal biofluid for the continuous monitoring of whole body metabolism and exercise intensity. However, specific metabolites in skin interstitial fluid that are more closely associated with metabolic variables measured by indirect calorimetr

Association Between Volatile Organic Compound Metabolites in Urine and Adult Lung Function: Evidence From NHANES 2011-2012.

OBJECTIVES: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been reported to be associated with adverse respiratory outcomes during daily exposure at low levels. However, the main contributors among the numerous VOCs and tobacco as the possible sources of VOCs in the general population have not been fully revealed. Here, we aimed to examine the association between urinary VOCs metabolites (UM-VOCs) mixtures and adult lung health. METHODS: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2011-2012 and aimed at 16 UM-VOCs. Initially, we used linear regression
