Reciprocal Space Mapping Analysis of Mg-Doped InGaN/GaN Heterostructure for Bias-Dependent UV Photodetection Behavior.

Indium gallium nitride (InGaN) has attracted considerable attention for ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronic applications due to its tunable bandgap and compatibility with GaN-based device platforms. However, the optoelectronic performance of InGaN is strongly influenced by lattice strain, indium distribution, surface morphology, and carrier transport properties. In this work, the UV photoresponse of an Mg-doped InGaN/GaN heterostructure subjected to postgrowth annealing at 600 °C is systematically investigated. Structural properties, including lattice parameters, strain state, degree of relaxation

A PDMS-based microfluidic platform enabling dual biochemical and electric-field stimulation for modeling sensory neuron-intervertebral disc crosstalk.

Inflammation-driven increases in nociception are prominent in pain pathologies associated with intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration yet are difficult to model in vitro. Since neurons are exposed to multi-modal stimuli in vivo, it is critical for these exposures to be conserved in an in vitro test system. We developed a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based microfluidic platform to interrogate peripheral sensory neurons (SNs) in the presence of conditioned media from nucleus pulposus cells from the degenerated IVD, to model a potential impact of IVD cells' secretome on pain sensing. Our platform

Design, Manufacturing, Tribology, and Performance of Microgears and Microgear Trains: A Critical Review of Mechanical Power Transmission at the Microscale.

Microgears enable mechanical power transmission, speed reduction, motion conversion, and synchronization in compact devices ranging from microelectromechanical systems to miniature robots and optically driven micromachines. Their behavior cannot, however, be inferred by geometrically scaling conventional gears alone. As size decreases, relative manufacturing errors, surface forces, friction, adhesion, environmental sensitivity, and metrological uncertainty become increasingly important, while torque capacity and stored kinetic energy decrease rapidly. This critical review integrates the design

CuI/ReS2 van der Waals Heterojunction for Self-Powered Broadband and Polarization-Sensitive Photodetection.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors that simultaneously deliver self-powered operation, broadband response, and high polarization selectivity remain challenging due to intrinsic trade-offs between carrier separation efficiency and anisotropic photoresponse in low-symmetry materials. Here, we report a CuI/ReS2 van der Waals heterojunction photodetector that addresses these challenges through a synergistic approach based on interface-engineered built-in electric fields coupled with intrinsic in-plane anisotropy. The heterojunction enables efficient photocarrier separation, while the dark curre

The Effectiveness and Security of the Tapered 4-Bladed Valvulotome (TF VenoCure2: VC) Used in Non-Reversed Translocated Saphenous Vein Bypass Surgeries.

Venous injury by a valvulotome is one of the risk factors for poor outcomes in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) with non-reversed saphenous vein bypasses. As I thought that outward-pointing blades might cause intimal damage or tributary laceration, I invented a new valvulotome with tapered 4 blades pointing inward 33 years ago, and have used it for 101 non-reversed translocated saphenous vein bypasses. The TF VenoCure2 (VC; Numata Optical Instruments Factory, Tokyo, Japan) injured 3 veins in the early days, which were easily repaired and used for bypasses. There were 3 cases of early thrombot

Exploratory investigation of OCTA-VISTA for longitudinal monitoring of neovascular age-related macular degeneration treatment.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the feasibility of a quantitative blood flow measurement program combining optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and variable interscan time analysis (VISTA) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treatment. METHODS: A prototype OCT device with a unique scan pattern acquired OCTA-VISTA images from 11 eyes of 10 patients with treatment-naïve nAMD and macular neovascularization (MNV) at three time points: pretreatment, immediately posttreatment, and 1 month later. MNV regions were segmented from the outer retinal slab. Blood flow paramet

Low-dimensional materials for intracellular electrophysiology: advances from synthesis to applications.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading global cause of mortality and disability, posing a major challenge to human health. Accurate, long-term monitoring of electrophysiological activity in excitable cells such as cardiomyocytes is critical for elucidating disease mechanisms, advancing drug discovery, and evaluating therapeutic efficacy. However, conventional techniques each present key limitations: patch clamp offers high-fidelity signals but is invasive and low-throughput; optical imaging enables parallel measurements but is hindered by phototoxicity and limited temporal resolution; and

Intelligent Soft Opto-Magnetic Robot for Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy.

Minimally invasive interventions (MII) have transformed surgical practice by reducing patient trauma, speeding recovery, and improving patient outcomes. However, their effectiveness remains constrained by the lack of tactile feedback in confined spaces, reliance on manual dexterity, and dependence on radiation-based imaging. Remotely controlled miniature soft robots that integrate tactile sensing, real-time monitoring, and therapeutic delivery offer a promising route to overcome these barriers, but achieving such multifunctionality within a single device has yet to be realized. Here, we introd

Solid-State Red Carbon Quantum Frameworks With Narrowband Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence for Undoped LEDs With High-Temperature Operational Stability.

High color purity and efficiency of red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are essential for true-color displays. Solution-processable undoped emission layers represent the ideal device architecture to enhance operational lifetime and reduce fabrication complexity. However, it remains challenging to achieve narrowband emission in solid-state, which requires reducing vibrational coupling and suppressing the π-π stacking interactions between aromatic structures. Herein, we developed solid-state red carbon quantum frameworks (SSR-CQFs) that exhibit narrowband thermally activated delayed fluorescence (T

Automated Anatomical Landmark Localization in Anterior Segment OCT Images Using an Efficient Deep Learning Framework.

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is essential for structural assessment of the anterior eye, yet automated landmark localization remains challenged by pervasive speckle noise, indistinct tissue interfaces, and labor-intensive manual annotation with notable inter-observer variability. This study presents NSE YOLO, an enhanced YOLOv11 framework for high-precision landmark localization in AS-OCT images after implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation. It integrates a dual-branch NewConv module for multi-scale feature extraction, a dual-additive residual self-attention bloc

Integrated frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) interferometer with in situ common-path referencing for plasma diagnostics using a commercial radar system-on-chip.

Millimeter-wave interferometry is a standard diagnostic for line-integrated electron density, but conventional implementations typically rely on discrete high-frequency sources, mixers, and separately aligned reference paths. Here, we report an integrated frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometer for plasma diagnostics using a commercial 60-64 GHz radar system-on-chip and, critically, an in situ common-path reference architecture that enables phase-stable operation with industrial hardware. The key design feature is the intentional use of aperture-clipping reflection from the diagnost

Efficacy of Optically Pumped Magnetometers in Detecting Activity From the Cerebellar Cortex.

The cerebral cortex has been extensively studied using magnetoencephalography (MEG), but the cerebellum has received less attention, partly due to technical limitations. Recent advances in high-resolution anatomical modeling enable surface-based analysis of cerebellar activity. At the same time, MEG technology has evolved, with on-scalp systems employing optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) emerging as an alternative for conventional superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-based systems. In contrast to rigid one-size-fits-all SQUID sensor helmets, OPMs allow flexible positioning o

Refractive Index-Correlated Pseudocoloring for Adaptive Color Fusion in Holotomographic Cytology.

Conventional bright-field (BF) cytology of thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) suffers from staining variability and limited subcellular contrast. Here, we present a refractive index-correlated pseudocoloring (RICP) framework that integrates quantitative refractive index (RI) maps obtained by holotomography (HT) with color BF images to enhance subcellular visualization and image interpretability. A digital micromirror device (DMD)-based HT system combined with an RGB LED illumination module enabled sequential acquisition of RI tomograms and BF images from Papanicolaou (PAP)-stained th

A novel vaginal manipulator for identifying vaginal canal separation line by visible and near-infrared transillumination light: PHARUS Pipe.

INTRODUCTION: In total laparoscopic hysterectomy, a uterine manipulator with transillumination functionality is often employed as an instrument to visualize the vaginal canal demarcation line. However, the utilization of this device necessitates an external white light source and a fiber optic cable. In this study, we developed a prototype vaginal manipulator (PHARUS Pipe) with a simpler configuration to visualize the vaginal canal separation line. METHODS: The PHARUS Pipe is constructed from a pipe, an annular array of chip-type light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a wavelength of warm-white an

Evaluation of choroidal thickness changes in patients with migraine using optical coherence tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enabled the study of ocular impairments associated with certain neurological pathologies, such as migraine. This common condition represents a risk factor for ocular ischemic complications. We investigated changes in choroidal thickness (CT) in migraine patients with and without aura (MWA and MWoA respectively) compared to healthy controls using OCT and identified factors influencing the occurrence of these anomalies in migraine. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional case-control study including migraine patients and control subjects. All pat

Efficient detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgG by a smartphone-based high-throughput fiber optic sensor.

The World Health Organization has indicated that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is likely to persist for an extended period, with the potential emergence of new mutated strains. To effectively control the spread of the virus, there is an urgent need for simple, rapid, and reliable assays to identify SARS-CoV-2 infections, particularly in community hospitals or clinical centers. This study introduces a smartphone-based high-throughput fiber-optic immunosensor (HFIS) for rapid SARS-CoV-2 IgG detection. The system significantly improves upon existing methods by

Development of a Low-Cost Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope Using Semiconductor Laser Technology.

In recent years, the use of scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) has emerged as a valuable tool in ophthalmic diagnostics. However, its widespread adoption has been prevented by substantial costs associated with existing devices. This study reports on the development of a low-cost SLO that is safe, requires no pupil dilation and no focus adjustment, and uses semiconductor laser technology for scanning. A prototype SLO equipped with red (638 nm) and infrared (IR; 795 nm) lasers was developed, and eyes with ocular diseases including glaucoma, branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), and diabetic ret
