Our study aimed to describe the patterns and characteristics of injuries and illnesses incurred during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 (FWWC2023). Team medical personnel recorded all injuries, illnesses, and mental health problems requiring medical attention, plus match, and training exposure into a centralised FIFA database using recent consensus-based methodology. Of the 32 teams at FWWC2023, 26 teams participated in the study, including 536 of 742 players. A total of 161 medical-attention injuries (incidence rate (IR): 14.2 per 1000 h [95% CI: 12.1 to 16.6]) and 59 time-loss injuries (IR: 5

The aim of this study was to investigate the change of direction (COD) frequencies and intensities of high-performance soccer players of the German Bundesliga independent of tactical and match context. COD data were collected from 18 German Bundesliga soccer teams (season 2016-2017; 308 fixtures) by an optical tracking system (OTS) (TRACAB). CODs were tracked using a modified algorithm and were sub-categorized by entry velocity (<3.0 m⋅s-1, 3.0-5.5 m⋅s-1, 5.5-7.0 m⋅s-1 and >7.0 m⋅s-1) and COD angle (20-59°, 60-119° and 120-180°). COD metric frequencies were compared between playing positions (

This retrospective cohort study aims to examine concussion incidence rates (IR) in collegiate soccer players and compare IRs based on risk factors including sex, competition level, games/practices, history of concussion, and playing position. Collegiate soccer players were recruited (n = 2,471) from 23 institutions from the NCAA-DoD Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium. Incidence rates for concussion per 1000 athlete exposures (AEs) were calculated across the 2015-16/2016-17 seasons. Incidence rates (IR) comparing risk factor groups were also calculated. A total of

In 2019, FIFA revised the goal kick (GLK) rule such that a GLK could be performed even if the kicker had teammates in the penalty area. This study aimed to examine whether the rule revision reduced the frequency of aerial challenge (AC) and long GLKs (LGLKs), which are risk factors for head injury and concussion in soccer. We analyzed all official league matches (306 matches/season) of the Japan Professional Soccer League 1st Division before (2018 season) and after the rule revision (2020 season). The analysis categorized GLKs into short GLKs (SGLKs) and LGLKs, depending on the GLK distance, a

Severe traumatic abdominal injuries and duodenal ruptures are relatively rare in soccer and can be easily missed and turn into a life-threatening condition. All team physicians need to be familiar with the warning sign in these situations. This report aims to report a case, discuss the diagnostic and treatment process and the return to play protocol.During a professional female soccer team training session, the injury occurred while the player's epigastrium was hit hardly by the opponent's knee. In the first evaluation, there was only mild epigastrium pain without any other sign. Eventually, p

We report a rare case of complete knee dislocation following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) disruption without any other ligament tears. The pathology of the knee joint was torn ACL, intact other ligaments, osteochondral fractures and bone bruise of the lateral femoral condyle, and torn lateral meniscus. In this case, osteochondral fracture resulting from the anteriorly sublaxiation of the tibia following ACL disruption was considered to prevent from spontaneous reduction. This case suggests that anterolateral knee dislocation and spontaneous reduction may occur in ACL injuries.

The back is subjected to a great deal of strain in many sports. Up to 20% of all sports injuries involve an injury to the lower back or neck. Repetitive or high impact loads (e.g., running, gymnastics, skiing) and weight loading (e.g., weightlifting) affect the lower back. Rotation of the torso (e.g., golf, tennis) causes damage to both, the lumbar and thoracic spine. The cervical spine is most commonly injured in contact sports (e.g., boxing, football). One of the factors that increases the odds of injuries in athletes is excessive and rapid increases in training loads. In spite of currently …

BACKGROUND: Rugby union is the second commonest cause of sporting fracture in the UK, yet little is known about patient outcomes following such fractures.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of fractures in rugby union, their morbidity and the likelihood of return to rugby post-injury in a known UK population at all skill levels.
METHODS: All rugby union fractures sustained during 2007-2008 in the Edinburgh, Mid and East Lothian populations were prospectively recorded, when patients attended the only adult orthopaedic service in Lothian. The diagnosis was confirmed by an orthopaedic surg

The presentation of vomiting and bradycardia after closed head trauma should invariably prompt concern for significant intracranial injury, yet other less common causes for the clinical picture do exist. This case reports one such scenario in which fracture to the patient's inferior orbital wall resulted in the rare though potentially life-threatening oculocardiac reflex, a vagally mediated phenomenon with possible respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastric motility effects.

The Rugby Injury and Performance Project (RIPP) is a prospective cohort study by a multidisciplinary research group. Rugby injuries constitute an important area for research because rugby union is New Zealand's national sport and because of the considerable cost of all sports injury acknowledged by the Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Corporation (ACC). The initial phase of data collection in the RIPP involved a pre-season questionnaire which, among other things, sought to establish variables relating to the past injury experience of players. The influence of previous injury,

Isometric knee-flexor testing is commonplace in soccer, yet data to inform choice of knee-flexion angle are limited. This study aimed to compare peak force production and muscle activation between two isometric knee-flexor tests. To compare peak force, 43 male soccer players (age 21.5 ± 5 years; stature 180.3 ± 6.3 cm; body mass 74.6 ± 8.9 kg) completed 3 × 5-second maximal efforts on the Nordbord device (Vald Performance) with a 0- (ISO-Prone) and 30-degree (ISO-30) knee angle, respectively. To compare peak muscle activation, a further 13 trained male participants (25 ± 6 years; 178.2 ± 5.6 c

Understanding the most common injuries in beach soccer and their risk factors is essential for ensuring player safety. We aimed to describe the injury patterns and identify factors associated with the risk of injury in men's beach soccer. We prospectively recorded injuries reported by players at an on-site aid station during the Japanese National Beach Soccer Championships between 2013 and 2023 (9 tournaments). Match exposure was recorded through video review. We described the injury types and sites, and the factors associated with the injury risk using generalized estimating equations in nega

This study aimed to investigate the criterion validity of commonly used devices to assess maximal sprinting speed (MSS) in soccer. Thirty elite youth soccer players completed three trials of a 30-m sprint test to assess MSS. All sprints were simultaneously captured via a radar gun (Stalker ATS II), timing gates (Smartspeed Pro, Fusion Sport), a magnetic timing system (Humotion SmarTracks) and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) (Kinexon Perform GPS Pro). The radar gun and the GNSS recorded sprinting speed continuously, while the fastest 5-m split during the 30-m sprint was used for the

There is a paucity of literature analyzing the impact of fatigue from actual competitive soccer match-play on measures of neuromuscular function and muscle damage markers in youth players. Aims The main purpose was to analyze the acute pre- and post-competitive soccer match-play changes in measures of landing mechanics, stretch-shortening cycle capability, physical performance, muscle damage, and match intensity. A secondary purpose was to explore whether the players' maturity status and chronological age were associated with post-soccer match-play responses. Methods Thirty-two male youth outf

There is concern that exposure to soccer headers may be associated with neurological sequelae. Training proper heading technique represents a coachable intervention that may reduce head acceleration exposure. The objective was to assess relationships between heading technique and head kinematics in female youth soccer players. Fourteen players (mean age = 14.4 years) wore instrumented mouthpieces during practices and games. Headers were reviewed by three raters to assign a technique score. Mixed models and LASSO regression evaluated associations of technique with peak linear acceleration (PLA)

Single leg drop jump (SLDJ) assessment is commonly used during the later stages of rehabilitation to identify residual deficits in reactive strength but the effects of physical capacity on kinetic and kinematic variables in male soccer players following ACL reconstruction remain unknown. Isokinetic knee extension strength, kinematics from an inertial measurement unit 3D system and SLDJ performance variables and mechanics derived from a force plate were measured in 64 professional soccer players (24.7 ± 3.4 years) prior to return to sport (RTS). SLDJ between-limb differences was measured (part

Soccer athletes experience repetitive head impacts (RHI) through purposeful heading and unintentional head impacts, which may be associated with acute and chronic brain injury. Previous soccer studies have sought to quantify and characterize RHI, but to-date no consistent, standardized methods exist. The Heads-Up Checklist (HUC), originally used for characterizing head impacts in hockey, was modified to be used in soccer (soccer HUC [SHUC]). Our aim was to determine the reliability of quantifying ball-to-head impacts using video verification and to develop and test the reliability of the SHUC
