Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is an uncommon adnexal skin tumor. It is usually located on the head or neck of people over 50 years of age, affecting men and women equally. The etiology is unclear; the source used to be considered the eccrine glands, but more recent hypotheses defend this carcinoma as originating in the apocrine glands or modified apocrine glands. The tumor may clinically appear as a normal skin-colored nodule with ill-defined edges and slow growth. Histologically, a proliferation of neoplastic cells appears, which could present in a tubular, cribriform, or

INTRODUCTION: The adenoids, or pharyngeal tonsils, are lymphatic tissue localized at the mucous layer of the roof and posterior wall of nasopharynx. Dysphonia defined as perceptual audible change of a patient's habitual voice as self judged or judged by his or her listeners. The diagnosis of dysphonia relies on clinical judgment based on phoniatric symptoms, auditory perceptual assessment of voice (APA) and full laryngeal examination.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study was conducted to evaluate the effect of adenoid hypertrophy on voice and laryngeal mucosa. The study sample composed of sixty ch…

BACKGROUND: The carcinogenesis mechanism of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary gland is poorly understood. MicroRNA155 (miRNA155) has been involved in the carcinogenesis of many malignant tumors. The present study aims to examine the role of miRNA155 in tumor growth and invasion of ACC.
METHODS: MiRNA155 expression was determined in ACC specimens along with normal salivary glands by quantitative PCR. Using ACC-2 cells as a model for ACC, cell proliferation was examined by MTT assay after knocking down miRNA155 expression, and cell cycle analysis was performed. Invasive capacity of

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) occurs more commonly in the minor salivary glands of the palate on than the tongue. ACC is a malignant neoplasm that accounts for 1-2% of all head and neck malignancies and 10-15% of all salivary gland malignancies. ACC affects the exocrine glands at any site, but the parotid gland is the most common site in the head and neck region. Many factors should be taken into account in the prognosis of ACC, including the histological and clinical stages of the disease. The most striking feature of ACC is that it is locally aggressive, with a high recurrence level, perine

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasal septum is extremely rare. We present the case of a 56-year-old male who complained of nasal bleeding and nasal obstruction for 1 month. A mass arising from nasal septum was found by endoscope. The tumor was removed under lateral rhinotomy and histopathologic examination revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma with cribriform pattern. He then had postoperative radiotherapy. No recurrence was noticed after 1 year of follow-up. Despite its rarity, adenoid cystic carcinoma should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of nasal tumor.

We report results of a retrospective study of 12 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the parotid gland. Local pain was often observed in ACC among other malignant parotid tumors. Although fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA) was not effective for preoperative diagnosis, frozen section diagnosis (FS) during surgery showed excellent results. Cases with T3 or T4 underwent total or enlarged parotidectomy, but, often showed positive surgical margins. Postoperative radiation therapy seemed useful in these cases and the 5-and 10-year disease-specific survivals in these 12 cases were 90.0% and

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor originating from the salivary glands. The characteristic clinicopathologic features of this tumor are perineural spread, local recurrences, and distant metastases. Radical surgery combined with radiotherapy, as mentioned in the literature, is the best method of treatment. This clinical review article is intended to analyze the outcome of management of a group of 22 ACC patients, who were treated in our clinic.
METHODS: Between 1985 and 2000, 22 patients with ACC of minor salivary glands were treated in the Clinic of Oral and Ma

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal (EAC) is a very rare malignant tumor and its diagnosis is frequently missed because of the superficial nature of biopsies. A 30 year old male presented with 6 months history of recurrent painful right ear discharge. On examination there was a nodule of 2 cms in diameter. The microscopic examination of the punch biopsy specimen of tumor revealed typical features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma. While reporting the biopsies of external auditory canal one should keep the adenoid cystic carcinoma as one of the possible differentials, especiall

FGFR3 germline mutations cause autosomal dominant skeletal disorders including achondroplasia, thanatophoric dysplasia, severe achondroplasia with developmental delay and acanthosis nigricans, and Crouzon syndrome. Somatic mutations of FGFR3 have been identified in bladder cancer, multiple myeloma, and other neoplasms. FGFR3 mutations have also been detected in 40% of seborrheic keratoses (SKs) of the hyperkeratotic and acanthotic subtype, which are very common benign skin tumors. Using a multiplex SNaPshot assay that covers 11 activating FGFR3 mutations, we investigated a series of 27 SKs of

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is one of the rarest eyelid tumors.
CASE: A 39-year-old man presented with a small subcutaneous induration in his left lower eyelid close to the lower lacrimal punctum.
OBSERVATIONS: Under a clinical diagnosis of chalazion, the eyelid induration was extracted surgically via the palpebral conjunctiva. Histopathological examination of the extracted tumor revealed proliferation of basaloid cells with a prominent cribriform pattern containing Alcian blue-positive and periodic acid Schiff-positive material, leading to a diagnosis of adenoid c

Adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is an uncommon but well-recognized variant of squamous cell carcinoma that was first described by Lever in 1947. ASCC has been reported to originate in the sun-exposed skin of the head and neck and in other sites. An additional case of ASCC is reported here. The patient was a 64-year-old Japanese woman who requested examination of a reddish lesion on the left floor of the mouth. The biopsy material was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. Clinical examination showed a well-circumscribed, 20 x 10 mm-sized lesion, which was categorized as cT2cN0cm 0. Tumor
