Qualitative and quantitative contamination of ready-to-eat food-stuffs with the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes was studied in 1586 samples collected from 103 supermarkets (n = 946) and 61 households (n = 640) in Vienna, Austria. Seventeen groups of ready-to-eat foods were classified into three risk categories for contamination (CP1-CP3). Three to four samples were randomly collected at the retail level from each CP. This is the first large-scale, countrywide study evaluating blood pressure levels in treated hypertensive patients based on home blood pressure monitoring. The study was conducted all over Austria by 166 physicians enrolling a total of 1303 patients each taking at least 30 home blood pressure readings (a total of 39,000 readings). Pap smear screening was introduced in Austria in the late 1960's and was recommended annually for all women older than 20 years ever since. This is an opportunistic screening. The evaluation has to rely on population based data (mortality, stage distribution, screening prevalence). The aim of this study is to describe the hospitalization and regional distribution of selected cardiovascular and thrombo-embolic events (cardiac infarction, cerebral strokes, deep vein thromboses, pulmonary embolism) of young women in Austria in the years 1993 and 1994, and to collect basic epidemiologic data for the study of the side effects of oral contraceptives. Emergence of Autochthonous Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis Infections in Horses, Czech Republic and Austria, 2019-2023.

We report 4 cases of equine cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania martiniquensis in Czech Republic and Austria, outside the known endemic range of leishmaniases. The parasite should be considered as a potential cause of cutaneous lesions in horses; the risk for zoonotic transmission to immunocompromised humans is anticipated throughout central Europe.

Chronic Gastro-Duodenal Ulcerative Disease and the Death of Father Stephan Schätzl from Viechtwang (Austria).

Stephan Schätzl was the parish priest of Viechtwang, Upper Austria. He lived in the aftermath of the Peace of Augsburg in a period of schism between Roman Catholics and Lutherans. His portrait, depicted only 6 days before his demise in 1590, shows that he had extreme ante mortem cachexia. Documentary sources detailed his life and ill-health and it is proposed that he had chronic gastro-duodenal ulcerative disease which ultimately led his to death.

Members of the genus Legionella are widespread in natural water sources. This is the first report on the draft genome sequences of Legionella taurinensis in Austria.
