Drugs Affecting Body Weight, Body Fat Distribution, and Metabolic Function-Mechanisms and Possible Therapeutic or Preventive Measures: an Update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Weight gain and body fat redistribution are common side effects of many widely used drugs. We summarize recent literature on prevalence data and mechanisms associated with drug-induced body fat changes and mechanisms to prevent or treat metabolic side effects. RECENT FINDINGS: The highest prevalence of metabolic complications is seen with antipsychotics and antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV and may, at least partly, be responsible for the increased risk for co-morbid diseases such as diabetes, steatosis of the liver, and cardiovascular disease. The pathogene

Prognostic influence of body mass index and body weight gain during adjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy in Korean colorectal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Asian population has different body mass index (BMI) profile compared to Caucasian population. However, the effect of obesity and body weight gain in Asian colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy has not been studied thus far. METHODS: We have analyzed the association between disease-free survival (DFS) and obesity/body weight change during treatment in Korean stage III or high-risk stage II colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant 5-fluorouracil/ leucovorin/oxaliplatin. BMI was classified according to WHO Asia-Pacific classification. Weight change wa…

Losing weight, gaining confidence? actual weight does not predict body (dis)satisfaction and self-esteem in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: In line with modern-day beauty ideals, many adolescent girls strive to have a slender figure. Thus, low body weight is expected to be related to greater body satisfaction and self-esteem in adolescent girls. However, for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) this is often not the case: despite being underweight, they exhibit high levels of body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Negative cognitive biases for information related to one's body might explain this disconnection between body weight and body (dis)satisfaction/self-esteem in adolescents with AN. The present study explo…

Ability to predict irregular periods of food depriviation improves body-weight regulation and reduces weight gain in food-insecure starlings.

Food insecurity is associated with higher body weight in humans and other species, but the causal effect of unpredictable food availability on weight gain is unknown. We measured food intake and weight in starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exposed to repeated irregular periods of food deprivation. We manipulated the predictability of deprivation between subjects with a 1 h visual cue that either reliably preceded deprivation (Predictable group) or was uncorrelated with deprivation (Unpredictable group). During the cue, Predictable birds reduced their food intake and spent less time inactive, indicat…

Gestational body weight gain and risk of low birth weight or macrosomia in women of Japan: a nationwide cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Both maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) influence maternal and pediatric outcomes. We sought to clarify the impact of prepregnancy BMI-specific GWG and its patterns on the risk of low birth weight (LBW) or macrosomia using data from a large nationwide study in Japan. METHODS: This cohort study (n = 98,052) used data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). The outcome variables in this study were LBW and macrosomia. We stratified the subjects into groups according to prepregnancy BMI. RESULTS: GWG from pre-pregnancy to the

Multimodal Body Representation of Obese Children and Adolescents before and after Weight-Loss Treatment in Comparison to Normal-Weight Children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether obese children and adolescents have a disturbed body representation as compared to normal-weight participants matched for age and gender and whether their body representation changes in the course of an inpatient weight-reduction program. METHODS: Sixty obese (OBE) and 27 normal-weight (NW) children and adolescents (age: 9-17) were assessed for body representation using a multi-method approach. Therefore, we assessed body size estimation, tactile size estimation, heartbeat detection accuracy, and attitudes towards one's own body. OBE

Body weight, weight perceptions and food intake patterns. A cross-sectional study among male recruits in the Norwegian National Guard.

BACKGROUND: Young men tend to have a low intake of vegetables and fruit. Unfortunately, this group is difficult to reach with health information. Furthermore, knowledge about weight perceptions and the relationship to food behaviour among young men is scant. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between BMI, health and weight perceptions and food intake patterns among young men in the military. METHODS: Data were collected with a 4-day food diary among 578 male recruits (age 18-26, mean 19.7) in the Norwegian National Guard (response rate 78%), in addition to a questionnai

Patterns of weight and body composition change in premenopausal women with early stage breast cancer: has weight gain been overestimated?

The widely documented problem of weight gain during adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy has decreased in frequency and magnitude. However, adverse changes in body composition remain a problem. This study identified the frequency, magnitude, and patterns of weight and body composition change in a sample of premenopausal breast cancer survivors who were receiving 3 common chemotherapy regimens. The longitudinal study followed 76 women at 2 centers in Ontario, Canada. Measures were obtained at baseline, the start of every other treatment cycle and treatment completion. Participants' mean age was

Diffusion-weighted Whole-body Imaging with Background Body Signal Suppression Enables Simultaneous Whole-body Assessments of IgG4-related Diseases.

Objective IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic condition that frequently involves multiple organs. This study examined the utility of diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression (DWIBS) for the diagnosis and monitoring of IgG4-RD. Methods Twenty patients underwent DWIBS for the diagnosis of IgG4-RD. Of these, six did so after steroid therapy. The extent of high-intensity areas visible on DWIBS was compared to that on computed tomography (CT). Changes in signal enhancement and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values on DWIBS were analyzed following

Overvaluation of body shape/weight and engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors in eating disorders: is there a reciprocal relationship?

BACKGROUND: Overvaluation of body shape/weight is thought to be the core psychopathology underlying eating disorders, which propels engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors. In turn, these behaviors lead to binge eating and/or maintenance of low weight thereby reinforcing overvaluation. The present study investigated the reciprocal relationship between overvaluation and engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors (defined in two ways: restrictive eating and compulsive exercise) among women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa (N = 237). METHOD: Partici

The relationship between premorbid body weight and weight at referral, at discharge and at 1-year follow-up in anorexia nervosa.

Body mass index (BMI) is one of the most important outcome predictors in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). A low premorbid BMI percentile calculated by the patients recalled premorbid weight and the height at first admission has been found to predict the BMI at first inpatient admission. In this study, we sought to confirm this relationship. We additionally analyze the relationship between premorbid BMI percentile and BMI percentile at discharge from the first inpatient treatment and at 1-year follow-up or alternatively if applicable upon readmission within this time period. We included 161

The effect of increased weight loading on body weight is partly dependent on Piezo1 in osteoblast-lineage cells and TrkA signaling.

Obesity is a complex disease driven by multiple factors, and a deeper understanding of its underlying mechanisms could enable the development of novel treatments. Based on our previous experimental studies, we have proposed a homeostatic mechanism regulating adiposity involving mechano-sensing of body weight by osteoblast-lineage cells in the lower extremities. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this proposed weight-sensing pathway remains to be elucidated. Recent studies have demonstrated that Piezo1-mediated mechano-sensing in osteoblast-lineage cells, as well as TrkA-dependent sign…
