Co-Parenting During Separation and After Divorce: Exploring Relational Aggression Towards the Former Romantic Partner and the Child(ren).

Hostile co-parenting can escalate during separation and divorce with significant ramifications on family relationships. The relational and private nature of this behavior can make it hard to document, study, and understand. The purpose of the present study was to determine how relational aggression targeting the co-parent (and former romantic partner), is associated with relational aggression targeting the parent-child bond. The sample consisted of 103 divorced/separated parents (45% fathers) who were co-parenting at least one child with their former partner (Mage years = 43.66, SD = 9.39). Pa

Perceptions, behaviours and attitudes towards smoking held by the male partners of Chinese pregnant women: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Direct associations of tobacco exposure during pregnancy with pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes have been proven. Previous studies suggest that expecting a child provides a valuable opportunity to promote behavioural changes, such as smoking cessation, among the male partners of pregnant women. Thorough understandings of Chinese expectant fathers' smoking behaviour during the transition to fatherhood is a prerequisite to the development of appropriate interventions to facilitate smoking cessation. This study aimed to explore the perceptions, behaviours and attitude

Spillover to triadic and dyadic systems in families with young children.

Research has evidenced support for the spillover model, which asserts that parents' marital functioning influences their parenting and coparenting behavior in dyadic (mother-child and father-child) and triadic (mother-father-child) family contexts. However, few studies have simultaneously investigated the spillover model in both parenting and coparenting systems, preventing examination of whether spillover impacts both systems equally or differentially. Further, little research has examined whether quality of the marital system influences children's behavior toward their parents, as well as th

Parents as partners: including mothers and fathers in the treatment of children who stutter.

Parents are frequently included in our intervention methods with children who stutter. However, if we examine the research and clinical literature, we find that we do not distinguish between the roles of mothers and fathers in our diagnosis and intervention procedures. Evidence that mothers and fathers may differ in their interactions with children, in general, and children who stutter, in particular, will be presented. Implications of these findings for our clinical practices will be discussed. By doing so, a case will be made for including both mothers and fathers as partners in the treatmen

Parents' experiences of abuse by their adult children with drug problems.

AIMS: To examine parents' experiences of abuse directed at them by their adult children with drug problems. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The material consists of 32 qualitative interviews on child-to-parent abuse with 24 mothers and eight fathers. The interviewees had experienced verbal abuse (insults), emotional abuse (threats), financial abuse (damage to property and possessions) and physical abuse (physical violence). FINDINGS: In the parents' narratives, the parent-child interaction is dominated by the child's destructive drug use, which the parents are trying to stop. This gives rise to conflic

A Longitudinal Study of the Relation Between Family Functioning and Preschool ADHD Symptoms.

The present study examined the bidirectional relation between family functioning and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms across the preschool years. Participants included 197 (110 boys) 3-year-old children (M = 44.14 months, SD = 3.43; 60% White) with and without behavior problems and their parents who took part in a 3-year longitudinal study. Parenting, parent psychopathology, life stress, and child symptoms were assessed annually from ages 3 to 6. Cross-lagged models provided evidence for both parent and child effects for mothers. In particular, greater maternal overreac

LAV/HTLV-III infection in children of African origin: experience in Belgium.

From December 1982 to June 1985, we diagnosed LAV/HTLV-III infection in 16 children of African origin living in Belgium or referred to one of the hospitals participating in this study. Diagnosis was proven in seven of them by isolation of virus of the LAV/HTLV-III group. In the nine others, LAV/HTLV-III infection was highly probable because of the presence of antibodies against the virus (seven subjects) or clinical and immunological evidence of immune deficiency associated with a parental history of LAV/HTLV-III infection (two subjects). Five of these children had a severe illness starting in

Parental physical abuse and sexual orientation in males.

Because male homosexuals have usually been found to have poorer relationships with their fathers than male heterosexuals, and because children who are disappointments to their parents are more likely to be physically abused than other children, it was hypothesized that gays are more likely than heterosexual men to have been physically abused by parents. This hypothesis was tested comparing 17 gay male college students and 67 heterosexual male college students. Gay males were found to have been more abused during adolescence. Abuse was related to a history of childhood femininity, to having poo

Family eczema-history in 2-year-olds with eczema; a prospective, population-based study. The PACT-study, Norway.

BACKGROUND: A maternal line of inheritance regarding eczema has been described in several studies, whereas others find associations to both a maternal as well as a paternal line of inheritance. When studying family history of eczema symptoms, cohort studies including siblings are rare. Time point for assessing family eczema-history could be of importance when studying the associations between family eczema-history and children with eczema, as parents with unaffected children may not recall mild symptoms in other siblings or their own disease history. We therefore aimed to study the association

Family genetic designs in MoBa provide insights into health and functioning.

Genome-wide association studies using large, population-based samples of unrelated individuals have discovered thousands of genetic associations with health and disease1. These studies can help explain genetic and environmental risks. However, increasing evidence suggests that population-based estimates, while precise, can also reflect confounding that affects their use and interpretation. This confounding can be overcome using data from genotyped family members, such as nuclear mother-father-child trios2,3. However, samples of genotyped families are rare4-11. Here we illustrate some of the ad

Parent-adolescent conflict in teenagers with ADHD and ODD.

Eighty-seven male teens (ages 12-18 years) with ADHD/ODD and their parents were compared to 32 male teens and their parents in a community control (CC) group on mother, father, and teen ratings of parent-teen conflict and communication quality, parental self-reports of psychological adjustment, and direct observations of parent-teen problem-solving interactions during a neutral and conflict discussion. Parents and teens in the ADHD/ODD group rated themselves as having significantly more issues involving parent-teen conflict, more anger during these conflict discussions, and more negative commu

Parental violent discipline and adolescent health: is there a different effect when one or both parents are involved?

Children's exposure to parental violence increases the risk of adverse health outcomes. We aimed to examine how combinations of maternal and paternal violent disciplinary practices at ages 7 and 13 years shape adolescents' health-related behaviors and depressive symptoms. This cohort study included 4,610 participants from the Portuguese Generation XXI birth cohort, enrolled at birth (2005-2006) and followed up at ages 7 and 13 years. Maternal and paternal disciplinary tactics were reported using the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale, assessing psychological aggression, corporal punishment, a

Impact of the family on the sex lives of adolescents.

This article presents the results of three studies as they relate to the influence of the family on adolescents' sex lives. The first study examined sexual and contraceptive practices among girls aged 12-19 in Mexico City. It was found that both communication with the mother and pregnancy history of close female relatives were predictors of initiation of sexual relations, contraceptive use, and pregnancy. The second study examined differences between young men who had gotten their partner pregnant and young men who had not. Again, communication levels with parents were found to influence behav

Testing the effectiveness of the Responsible, Engaged, and Loving Fathers (REAL Fathers) intervention for improving early childhood development and reducing family violence in Uganda: Study protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Witnessing and experiencing violence impedes children's healthy development and learning, inhibits positive relationships, provokes low self-esteem and emotional distress, and can lead to self-harm and aggressive behavior across the life course. Evidence-based programs are needed that incorporate violence prevention strategies alongside methods to improve wellbeing and healthy development for children and their families. This trial evaluates the Responsible, Engaged, and Loving Fathers (REAL Fathers) intervention, a Ugandan-led multilevel community-based mentoring program for young

Direct and Indirect Longitudinal Associations of Mother and Father Engagement in Middle Childhood on Adolescent Externalizing and Internalizing Behaviors.

Parent engagement is an important aspect of parenting during childhood. However, little is known about the unique longitudinal associations of mother and father engagement with adolescents' externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors. This study uses Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study data to examine the potential direct and indirect associations of parent engagement at age 9 on adolescent externalizing and internalizing behaviors at age 15. The analytic sample size is 1349, and at age 9, the mean age of children was 9.40 years (SD = 0.37). Forty-eight percent of children were

"Understanding Fathers' Bonding With Preterm Infants: Influencing Fathers and Infants' Variables".

PURPOSE: Fathers are prone to suboptimal bonding with their preterm infants, but little is known about the roles that father and infant variables might play in the suboptimal bonding. This gap in knowledge limits the ability of nurses to identify and assist fathers at risk of suboptimal bonding. This study aims to identify (1) the bonding levels of fathers to their preterm infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and (2) the association between father and infant variables and bonding of fathers to their preterm infants hospitalized in (NICUs). DESIGN AND METHODS: This is

Father Involvement and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students' Vocational Identity Development.

Vocational identity development is a crucial yet underexplored aspect of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students' education and career progression. This study investigates the role of father involvement in shaping DHH students' vocational identity, focusing on the mediating effects of internal (self-determination) and external (social competence) factors. Using data from 1,003 DHH university students across China, the results revealed that father involvement significantly enhances vocational identity (β = 2.273, p < .001). Specifically, it positively impacts self-determination (β = 1.810, p <
