Women's characteristics and gender role attitudes: support for father involvement with children.

Women's (N = 364) personal characteristics and gender role attitudes were examined in relation to their support for father involvement with children. The respondents completed measures of trust, attitudes toward women, hostility, self-esteem, and father involvement. Nontraditional gender role attitudes, positive ratings of their own interpersonal trust, and low hostility toward men were predictive of the respondents' support for father involvement. Participant demographics (including age, marital status, and number of children) were unrelated to their views of father involvement. Results indic

Progeroid syndrome with characteristic facial appearance and hand anomalies in father and son.

We report on the father-to-son transmission of a progeroid syndrome characterized by facial anomalies, sparse subcutaneous fat, and hand anomalies including syndactyly, camptodactyly, and finger deviation. Mild mental retardation, microcephaly, and congenital heart defect were found only in the son. To our knowledge, this syndrome has not been described previously.

[Role of the father in the development of school-age children. Results of an epidemiologic study].

As part of an epidemiological follow-up study, data collected from 356 children at ages 8 and 13 and from their parents were analyzed to examine the relationship of parental child-rearing behavior and parents' psychological problems to the intellectual, emotional and social development of the offspring. The results revealed that while children are growing up father and child influence each other in specific ways. The fathers were particularly active in developing their children's cognitive abilities and had a strong influence especially on the development of their sons. At both age 8 and age 1…

Father to son transmission of decreased Ns activity in pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia.

We found both renal resistance to endogenous and exogenous PTH and reduced activity of the stimulatory guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory protein (Ns) of adenylate cyclase in a man with clinical signs of pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia (PHP-Ia). Both of his children also had reduced Ns levels and short stature. The girl, 11 yr old, had evidence of partial resistance to PTH, while the son, age 7 yr, had no apparent abnormalities in calcium metabolism or response to administered PTH. Variable expression of the metabolic abnormalities of PHP during childhood has been previously described. The

A fetus with recombinant of chromosome 8 inherited from her carrier father.

A pericentric inversion of chromosome 8, inv(8)(p23q22), in a male carrier resulted in an unbalanced recombinant, rec(8)dup q, inv(8)(p23q22), which was diagnosed prenatally. The features seen in the aborted fetus resembled the features seen in a previously affected child who received the identical recombinant from her carrier mother. In this particular inversion involving chromosome 8, both male and female carriers risk producing an unbalanced progeny. Different familial pericentric inversions are reviewed for the presence or absence of unbalanced recombinants.

Partner and professional support are associated with father-infant bonding: A cross-sectional analysis of mothers, midwives, and child health nurses' influence on primiparous and multiparous fathers of infants in Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: To assess if received professional and social support are associated with father-infant bonding among primiparous (first-time) and multiparous (multi-time) fathers. BACKGROUND: Early father-infant bonding predicts several positive child outcomes. However, while received professional and social support positively impacts fathers' transition into parenthood, little research has tested if these factors are associated with a stronger father-infant bond. METHODS: In total, 499 fathers (296 primiparous and 203 multiparous) of infants (aged 0-12 months) completed a cross-sectional online…

Human Milk Donation and Human Milk Banking from the Perspective of Fathers: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Most research on human milk donation and human milk banking has focused on mothers, while fathers' perspectives remain insufficiently explored. Although mothers may be willing to donate milk or use donor milk for their own infants, these decisions are often shaped by their spouses' viewpoints. This study aimed to explore fathers' views on human milk donation and human milk banking. METHODS: This qualitative study used an inductive thematic analysis approach. Data were collected between August and December 2024 through semi-structured interviews with 20 fathers who brought …

Children's emotion understanding and attachment security to mothers and fathers across the transition to siblinghood.

The transition to siblinghood represents a period of adjustment for parents and firstborn children, influencing child-parent attachment relationships and children's emotional development. This study examined the longitudinal bidirectional relations between firstborn children's emotion understanding and their attachment security to their mothers and fathers during this transition. Firstborn children (N = 230, 55% girls/45% boys, 86% White, 5% Black, 3% Asian, 4% Latinx, and Mage = 29.75 months) completed the Emotion Understanding in Early Childhood scale, and both mothers and fathers completed …

Fathers' reports of within-household vaccine decision making and young children's COVID-19 vaccination status.

Understanding how parents make decisions about child vaccination is important to guide interventions to increase child vaccination rates. However, few studies have examined parent vaccine decision making within households and no studies have examined this question from the perspective of fathers. In a sample of 943 fathers, from the Fathers & Families cohort and living in two-parent (father-mother) households, this study examines parents' decision making and agreement about their child receiving, or not receiving, the COVID-19 vaccine, and links with children's vaccination status. The associat…

Designing Child Nutrition Interventions to Engage Fathers: Qualitative Analysis of Interviews and Co-Design Workshops.

BACKGROUND: Fathers play a pivotal role in parenting and child feeding, but they remain underrepresented in intervention studies, especially those focused on disadvantaged populations. A better understanding of fathers' experiences and needs regarding support access and child nutrition information in the context of disadvantage can inform future interventions engaging fathers. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore fathers' experiences; perceived enablers; and barriers to accessing support and information related to parenting, child feeding, and nutrition and to co-design principles for tailor…

Low-income fathers are emotionally resilient: A qualitative exploration of paternal emotions across early parenting.

Emotions play an important role in fostering positive parenting and healthy child development. This qualitative study explored the affective experiences of racially diverse US fathers with low income across the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 fathers. Interview questions asked about fathers' early parenting experiences that elicit parenting emotions of different valence. Results from thematic analysis demonstrated activation of multiple emotions depending on different proximal and distal experiences. Specific to proximal exper…

European gay fathers via surrogacy: Parenting, social support, anti-gay microaggressions, and child behavior problems.

The present study investigated child behavior problems, parenting styles, coparenting, and couple relationship satisfaction in 67 European gay father families via surrogacy and 67 European heterosexual parent families via unassisted conception, all with children aged 1.5-10 years (M = 3.57 years, SD = 2.09). The two family groups were matched for child age and gender. In the gay father group only, the associations between family anti-gay microaggressions, family/friend support, and other main variables also were explored. Children of gay fathers had fewer externalizing and internalizing proble…

Gender-Specific Differences in Corporal Punishment and Children's Perceptions of Their Mothers' and Fathers' Parenting.

Corporal punishment is a widespread phenomenon and a common malformation of parenting. Gender is a core category of social order and family structure. Gender-specific differences in parenting and violent behavior have been studied for many years. Yet, relatively little is known about the impact of gender interactions on parent-to-child physical violence or the impact of such violence on children's perceptions of their parents' behavior. This study used data collected from 618 students in academic institutions in northern Israel to examine the relationship between different gender interactions
