Critical pulmonary valve stenosis (CPVS) and atrial septal defect (ASD) is an uncommon form of congenital heart disease. Concurrent transcatheter pulmonary valvuplasty and closure of secundum atrial septal defect appears to be an interesting alternative to surgical correction. We present the simultaneous balloon valvuloplasty of critical pulmonary stenosis (PS) with supra systemic right ventricular pressure and medium sized secundum ASD with right to left shunt.

A case report is presented of a 16-year-old woman with myotonic dystrophy, who required open-heart surgery for an atrial septal defect. We successfully repaired an atrial septal defect using normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass and electrically maintained ventricular fibrillation. Anesthesia using fentanyl, vecronium and isoflurane was uneventful and there were no postoperative complications. Anesthetic agents must be selected with care, and ventilation requires meticulous attention.

Transoesophageal cross-sectional echocardiography has special advantages when investigating the interatrial septum which is imaged perpendicularly without echo dropouts from an oesophageal transducer position. The technique was successfully used in 19 out of 20 patients (95%) with an ostium secundum atrial septal defect and in 30 control subjects. In all of the latter the interatrial septum was visualised as a continuous echo structure separating the atria, whereas a distinct discontinuity representing the septal defect was apparent in all patients with atrial septal defect. Echocardiographic

We report a case of acute left ventricular failure after transcatheter closure of a single secundum atrial septal defect in a 68-year-old man with coronary artery disease. Just before the procedure, two coronary lesions had been treated with direct stenting. Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects should always be deferred in ischemic heart disease patients who need percutaneous myocardial revascularization.

Double interatrial septum is an extremely rare congenital anomaly which forms a distinguished midline interatrial chamber between the two atria. The objective of this case report is to highlight this unusual anomaly and to discuss the potential complications of this condition. We report the case of a 6-year-old asymptomatic child who underwent cardiac evaluation for a soft systolic murmur eventually being diagnosed with double interatrial septum.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic or pericardial patches used for the closure of atrial septal defects are associated with infrequent but definite problems. As an alternative, we used a right atrial free-wall patch in 12 patients, 7-54 years of age.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The presence of a large secundum atrial septal defect (n=2). associated mitral valve regurgitation (n=7), primum atrial septal defect (n=2) and sinus venosus defect (n=1) necessitated the use of a patch. The mitral valve was repaired in 9 patients (including 2 with a primum defect). One patient with a primum defect who was in congestive

BACKGROUND: Secundum atrial septal defect is a common congenital heart disease. Amplatzer septal occluder has become the most commonly used device for its closure. This study was conducted to determine the safety and outcome of atrial septal defect closure with the Amplatzer septal occlude (ASO).
METHODS: This Case-series was conducted at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology/National Institute of Heart Diseases Rawalpindi from July 2010-11, on a total of 41 patients, out of these 41 patients, 18 (44%) patients underwent general anaesthesia while 23 (56%) patients were given local anaesthesia

Coronary embolism (CE) is the underlying cause of 3% of acute coronary syndromes but is frequently overlooked in the differential diagnoses of acute coronary syndromes. The CE may be direct (left sided from the native or prosthetic heart valve, the left atrium, left atrial appendage or pulmonary venous bed), paradoxical (from the venous circulation through a patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defects, cyanotic congenital heart defects or pulmonary arteriovenous malformations), or iatrogenic (following cardiac interventions. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF),

PURPOSE: For the repair of atrial/ventricular septal defects (ASD/VSD), transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is easy to perform, cost-effective, and does not require general anesthesia and intubation. Still, TTE is not universally accepted. To compare efficacy and safety of TTE versus transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to guide percutaneous ASD/VSD closure.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library were searched for articles published from their inception to December 2023. The primary outcome was the procedural success rate. The secondary outcomes were residual shunt, late complic

AIMS: The long-term survival of patients with isolated congenital ventricular septal defect (VSD) is not well described. The aim of this study was to describe the survival of a national cohort of patients with VSD compared with the general population.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Using Danish nationwide medical registries, all patients diagnosed with congenital VSD (n = 9,136) in the period 1977-2018 were included. Patients with chromosomal abnormalities and concomitant congenital cardiac malformations other than atrial septal defect were excluded. Each patient was matched by birthyear and sex with t

A 65-year-old woman with intermediate type atrioventricular septal defect had been undiagnosed until initial presentation with congestive heart failure. She underwent surgery when the ventricular septal defect was found to be restrictive. The atrioventricular valve was similar to the common atrioventricular valve, but was connected to the crest of the ventricular septal defect. Surgery included direct closure of the ventricular septal defect, repair of the cleft in the atrioventricular valve, and ostium primum closure. Postoperative echocardiography indicated successful heart repair. We presen

We have experienced a case of coronary sinus atrial septal defect (ASD) with ventricular septal defect (VSD). Cardiac catheterization revealed a step-up of oxygen saturation in right ventricle, L-R shunt 70.3%, R-L shunt 6.9% and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Since diagnosis of coronary sinus ASD was difficult, the operation was performed under diagnosis of VSD. Although the operation was success, cyanosis appeared after the operation. Contrast echocardiography using subcostal 4 chamber view showed coronary sinus ASD with a large Thebesian valve and the right-to-left shunt of the ASD. The Thebe

Accurate evaluation of an atrioventricular septal defect is readily achieved by echocardiography. A sound understanding of the basic morphology and associated lesions is key to this approach. This article first details the features that are common to all hearts with an atrioventricular septal defect, irrespective of the presence or absence of an interatrial or interventricular communication. These common features are: (1) inlet outlet disproportion; (2) absence of the atrioventricular muscular septum; (3) abnormal position of the left ventricular papillary muscles; (4) abnormal configuration o

We successfully corrected complete transposition of the great arteries associated with complete atrioventricular septal defect in a 50-day-old infant in concomitant arterial switch operation and two-patch repair. The combination of these 2 complex anomalies is very rare, and primary anatomical repair is feasible in such patients.

We report a rare case of a 21 month old child with a coronary sinus atrial septal defect associated with perimembranous ventricular septal defect and no left superior vena cava. The diagnosis was made by transthoracic echocardiogram and confirmed by angiography. The patient was operated on uneventfully, both defects were closed with bovine pericardial patches and the flow from the coronary veins was directed towards the left atrium. An echocardiogram revealed complete closure of both defects.

O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) transferase (OGT) is the only enzyme catalyzing O-GlcNAcylation. Although it has been shown that OGT plays an essential role in maintaining postnatal heart function, its role in heart development remains unknown. Here we showed that loss of OGT in early fetal cardiomyocytes led to multiple heart developmental defects including hypertrabeculation, biventricular dilation, atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and defects in coronary vessel development. In addition, RNA sequencing revealed that Angiopoietin-1, required within cardiomyocytes for b

Background Delayed brain development, brain injury, and neurodevelopmental disabilities are commonly observed in infants operated for complex congenital heart defect. Our previous findings of poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes in individuals operated for simple congenital heart defects calls for further etiological clarification. Hence, we examined the microstructural tissue composition in cerebral cortex and subcortical structures in comparison to healthy controls and whether differences were associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes. Methods and Results Adults (n=62) who underwent surgical

Hydatid cyst is the larval stage of echinococcosis caused by the canine tapeworm Echinococcus species, and the lung is the most common site of occurrence. Atrial septal defect is a common congenital heart disease with an incidence of 100 per 100,000 live births. To our knowledge, we report for the first time a case of coexistence of right lung hydatid cyst and atrial septal defect that were both treated with one-stage surgery.
