Maternal and fetal cardiometabolic recovery following ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound placental vascular occlusion.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive method of selective placental vascular occlusion, providing a potential therapy for conditions such as twin-twin transfusion syndrome. In order to translate this technique into human studies, evidence of prolonged fetal recovery and maintenance of a healthy fetal physiology following exposure to HIFU is essential. At 116 ± 2 days gestation, 12 pregnant ewes were assigned to control ( n = 6) or HIFU vascular occlusion ( n = 6) groups and anaesthetized. Placental blood vessels were identified using colour Doppler ultrasound; HIFU-mediate

Complications from microfocused transcutaneous ultrasound: Case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Microfocused ultrasound (MFUS) technology has been utilized since 2009 for improvement in mild to moderate skin and soft tissue laxity of the face and neck. Few complications have been previously reported, the majority of which include mild and transient erythema, edema, ecchymosis, and nerve paralysis. Rare yet serious potential complications of MFUS for noninvasive skin tightening of the face and neck are, however, possible. METHODS & MATERIALS: Retrospective multicenter case series of five patients from the authors' practice who developed serious adverse events di

The emerging role of transcranial magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound in functional neurosurgery.

To review the emerging role of transcranial MR-guided focused ultrasound as a treatment and research modality for functional neurological disorders, we summarize recent clinical and preclinical studies. Clinical trials have investigated the safety and efficacy of thermal lesions created by transcranial, high-intensity focused ultrasound. Preclinical work has additionally investigated the ability to disrupt the blood-brain barrier and to produce reversible neuromodulation with focused ultrasound utilizing lower intensities. We discuss ongoing trials and future avenues of investigation. © 2016 I

Combination of high-intensity focused ultrasound irradiation and hydroxyapatite nanoparticle injection to injure normal goat liver tissue in vivo without costal bone incision.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the in vivo safety of intravenous nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA), to explore how nano-HA might influence the effects of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) on normal liver tissue, and to investigate whether intravenous nano-HA could enhance HIFU for hepatocellular carcinoma ablation in a goat model. The present study, for the first time, indicated that the delivery of abundant nano-HA into the body over short periods of time could be assembled by the hepatic reticuloendothelial system, subsequently leading to a rapid rise of ultrasound-induced overhe

Feasibility of in vivo transesophageal cardiac ablation using a phased ultrasound array.

Over 2.2 million Americans suffer from atrial fibrillation making it one of the most common arrhythmias. Cardiac ablation has shown a high rate of success in treating paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Prevailing modalities for this treatment are catheter based radio-frequency ablation or surgery. However, there is measurable morbidity and significant costs and time associated with these invasive procedures. Due to these issues, developing a method that is less invasive to treat atrial fibrillation is needed. In the development of such a device, a transesophageal ultrasound applicator for cardiac

The first limb-sparing use of histotripsy for canine osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a devastating primary bone cancer in dogs and humans. Histotripsy is a non-invasive ablation technique that mechanically destroys targeted tumor with focused ultrasound and has shown promise in treating small portions of canine OS followed by limb amputation. This study represents the first use of histotripsy to treat large volumes of canine OS, using fractionated treatments, without subsequent surgical resection. Our objective was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of treating large volumes of OS, following clinical outcomes after histotripsy. 9 dogs with suspected OS

Focused ultrasound thermal ablation and CD40 agonism reprograms breast tumor immunity to drive regression and memory.

BACKGROUND: Focused ultrasound thermal ablation (T-FUS) is a clinically accessible, non-invasive modality capable of inducing rapid tumor cytoreduction while mobilizing early immunologic danger signals. However, its capacity to synergize with potent co-stimulatory immunotherapies in breast cancer (BC) remains undefined. Here, we investigated whether subtotal T-FUS cooperates with CD40 agonism to elicit durable, T cell-dependent tumor control across immunologically and molecularly distinct murine BC models. METHODS: Subtotal ultrasound-guided T-FUS was applied to E0771, BRPKP110, EMT6, and 4T1
