Acquired eyelash trichomegaly and generalized hypertrichosis associated with breast anomaly.

Acquired eyelash trichomegaly is a rare condition. We present a 23-year-old woman with acquired trichomegaly and generalized hypertrichosis from childhood. The patient also exhibited bilateral nipple retraction and unilateral left-sided accessory nipple. According to our knowledge the association between trichomegaly, hypertrichosis, and breast anomaly has not been reported.

Hypertrichosis cubiti (hairy elbows) and short stature: a recognisable association.

We report four patients with hypertrichosis cubiti who were referred for investigation of short stature. Two males, whose height was on and just below the 3rd centile respectively, were sporadic cases and two females with disproportionate short stature were mother and daughter. Radiological changes present in the familial cases were non-specific and biochemical investigations were normal. Of the four other published cases, two were sporadic and of normal height. The other two were sibs with short stature and their parents were heterozygous for the Weill-Marchesani syndrome. We were unable to a…

Severe hypertrichosis of the external ear canal during minoxidil therapy.

Minoxidil is a potent peripheral vasodilator used to treat patients with severe hypertension that is unresponsive to other medications. Hypertrichosis of the forehead, face, neck, shoulders, upper part of the arms, and legs is a frequent side effect that occurs in the majority of patients that use this drug. This phenomenon appears to be due to increased blood flow to hair follicles, with resultant excessive hair growth. We describe a patient with severe hypertrichosis of the external ear canal resulting in chronic otitis externa and hearing loss.

Polyneuropathy, skin hyperpigmentation, edema, and hypertrichosis in localized osteosclerotic myeloma.

1 61-year-old man had osteosclerotic myeloma that was localized in the eleventh thoracic vertebral body and associated with sensorimotor polyneuropathy, skin hyperipigmentation, edema, hypertrichosis, gynecomastia, and white nails. Cases of osteosclerotic myeloma with and without polyneuropathy in the literature were reviewed with special reference to accompanying dermatologic and endocrinologic signs and synmptoms. We assume that the polyneuropathy, cutaneous hyperpigmentation, edema, hypertrichosis, gynecomastia, and white nails are causally related to each other and are a remote effect of o…

Acquired localised hypertrichosis in a Chinese child after cast immobilisation.

Hypertrichosis refers to excessive hair growth that is independent of any androgen effect. Hypertrichosis could be congenital or acquired, localised or generalised. The phenomenon of acquired localised hypertrichosis following cast application for a fracture is well known to orthopaedic surgeons, but is rarely encountered by primary care physicians. We describe a 28-month-old Chinese boy who had fracture of right leg as a result of an injury. He had a cast applied by an orthopaedic surgeon as treatment. On removal of the cast 6 weeks later, he was noticed to have significant hair growth on his…

Concomitant alopecia areata and hypertrichosis after infliximab therapy: rara avis.

We present a 37 year-old man with HLA-B27 positive ankylosing spondylitis for the last 3 years. Interestingly, he developed both alopecia areata and hypertrichosis simultaneously following infliximab treatment. Reporting this interesting patient of ours -to our best notice for the first time in the literature- we call attention of clinicians to the contradistinctive effects of anti-TNF-α agents on hair growth cycle.

Generalised Gingival Fibromatosis and Hypertrichosis: A Rare Case of Syndromic Presentation.

Gingival fibromatosis is a benign oral condition characterised by a slow progressive, non-haemorrhagic, non-painful, local or generalised enlargement of the gingival tissues. Gingival fibromatosis may have a genetic basis and is frequently associated with systemic or extraoral findings. Hypertrichosis is a clinical condition characterised by excessive hair growth without androgenic stimulation. The present case report describes a case of a 16-year-old girl who presented with severe generalised gingival fibromatosis along with hypertrichosis, which was treated by gingivectomy, and uneventful po…

A child with generalized hypertrichosis due to secondary topical minoxidil exposure.

Hypertrichosis is defined as excessive hair growth anywhere on the body in either males or females. It may be caused by genetic conditions, endocrinological disorders, exposure to specific medications (including phenytoin, minoxidil and diazoxide) and other less frequent causes. We report the case of a 1-year-old boy with a family history of thyroid disease and alopecia areata who presented with generalized hypertrichosis due to secondary exposure to topical minoxidil. We discuss an uncommon cause of hypertrichosis and the importance of considering a wide differential diagnosis.

Localized Hypertrichosis with Traumatic Panniculitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Localized hypertrichosis with traumatic panniculitis is considered a rare condition. Previous articles have reported occurrence in females aged between 20 and 35 years. Possible mechanisms of trauma-induced localized hypertrichosis include hyperemia and angiogenesis induced by local inflammation, which can alter the hair growth cycle. The presence of inflammatory cells and lipomembranous changes on histopathology can support the diagnosis. We herein present a 35-year-old female patient with localized hypertrichosis following blunt trauma.
