Harlequin ichthyosis in two greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros).

Two greater kudu calves (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) born 7 years apart were found with fissures and thickened, scaly, cutaneous plates coveri … ogic, and electron microscopic findings in both kudu calves were consistent with those of harlequin ichthyosis, a rare dermatosis of humans believed to have an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. The underlying genetic and molecular abnormality and heritability of this condition in this greater kudu herd were not determined.

Testis cancer. Ichthyosis constitutes a significant risk factor.

Testis cancer and ichthyosis are both relatively rare diseases. Hence the finding of six individuals with both these conditions in a small population with testicular cancer is highly conspicuous and indicates some kind of connection among such persons. Despite the identical clinical appearances of their ichthyoses, three of the ichthyotic subjects had no measurable activity of the enzyme, steroid sulfatase (STS) in leucocytes, a distinct characteristic of recessive X-linked ichthyosis (RXLI). However, the remaining three subjects had normal STS activity, a strong indicator of autosomal dominan…

[Microsomal sulfatase deficiency in X chromosome-linked ichthyosis].

The microsomal sulfatases are known to be deficient in the X-linked recessive inherited type of ichthyosis (XLI), which is closely related to the placental steroid-sulfatase deficiency. Our group demonstrated biochemically the deficiency of steroid-sulfatase activity as well as arylsulfatase C activity in cultured skin fibroblasts and leukocytes of patients with XLI, whereas all cases of ADI investigated hitherto expressed high activities of microsomal sulfatase. On the other hand, the analysis of microsomal sulfatase in membranous preparations of uncultivated skin and hair follicles failed to…

Sex-linked ichthyosis and placental sulphatase C deficiency.

Ichthyosis was diagnosed in six boys born from pregnancies in which placental steroid sulphatase deficiency was present. In four cases the diagnosis of sex-linked ichthyosis was certain, in the other two the ichthyosis was probably of the sex-linked type. No arylsulphatase C activity could be demonstrated histochemically either in the epidermis of these boys, or in the epidermis of adults with sex-linked ichthyosis, whilst it was present in normal controls. In cultured skin fibroblasts steroid-sulphatase activity was extremely low. We conclude that deficiency of steroid sulphatase C or arylsul…

Congenital ichthyosis: concurrent immunodeficiency and atypical T cells.

A patient with congenital ichthyosis and progressive neurologic anomalies showed disturbances in the specific humoral and cellular defense as well as the presence of atypical lymphoid cells in skin and lymph node. The latter resembled the atypical T cells found in mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome. The possibility of the presence of either a cutaneous T cell lymphoma or unregulated T cell stimulation leading to concurrent immunodeficiency in this patient is discussed.

[Ichthyosis vulgaris, deafness, pili torti and tooth abnormalities].

A 18 year old female patient is reported, who has ichthyosis vulgaris, deafness, pili torti and anomalies of the teeth. The parents of the patient were deaf also but had little changes of the skin. The syndrom is not described before in the literature.

Secukinumab for lamellar ichthyosis in an adolescent: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lamellar ichthyosis (LI) is a rare hereditary disorder of keratinization, most commonly inherited in an autosomal recessive manner and frequently associated with pathogenic variants in the TGM1 gene. Patients usually present with generalized scaling, xerosis, and pruritus from birth. Current therapeutic options remain limited, and systemic retinoids are often associated with considerable adverse effects. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old female individual presented with generalized pruritic, lamellar scale-like skin changes present since birth. The diagnosis of LI was established ba…

Ichthyosis Prematurity Syndrome: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ichthyosis prematurity syndrome (IPS) is a rare autosomal recessive congenital disorder characterized by premature birth, neonatal respiratory distress, eosinophilia, and a thick, clay-like vernix at birth. This review aims to summarize the available reported cases of IPS, including genetic etiology, clinical features, management, and prognosis. METHODS: A search was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL, from inception to September 3, 2024 using the search terms "IPS" or "ichthyosis congenita type IV". This systematic review was registered…

ABHD5 frameshift deletion in Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis.

Ichthyoses are hereditary skin disorders characterized by the formation of scales and defects in the outermost layer of the epidermis. In dogs, at least six different breed-specific ichthyoses including a relatively common PNPLA1-related autosomal recessive ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers are known. In this study, we investigated 14 Golden Retrievers with scales that were not homozygous for the mutant PNPLA1 allele suggesting a genetically distinct new form of ichthyosis. Histopathological examinations showed lamellar, orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, and mildly hyperplastic epidermis that led t…

Ichthyosis follicularis syndromes in patients with mutations in GJB2.

Ichthyosis follicularis (IF) manifests as generalized spiny follicular projections found in syndromic diseases secondary to SREBF1 and MBTPS2 mutations. We sought the genetic cause of IF in two distinct families from a cohort of 180 patients with ichthyosis. In Family 1, the proband (Patient 1) presented with IF, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and punctate palmoplantar keratoderma. Using DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes, two compound heterozygous mutations, c.526A>G and c.35delG, were discovered in GJB2. In Family 2, the proband (Patient 2) presented with a previously unreported IF …

[Analysis of PNPLA1 gene mutation in a child with ichthyosis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child with ichthyosis. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was carried out to detect genomic copy number variants (CNVs) and variant of the medical exome. Candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: No disease-related CNV was identified in the patient. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the child has carried compound heterozygous variants of the PNPLA1 gene, including a previously known pathogenic c.100G>A (p.Ala34Thr) mutation and a novel c.56C>A (p.Ser19x) variant which was predicted to be a pathogenic according to the A…

Successful correction of ichthyosis-related ectropion by autografts.

Ectropion is a rather frequent complication of ichthyosis with negative functional and esthetic impact. Lid surgery can provide significant improvement. We report on a series of four ichthyosis patients with ongoing bilateral eye problems despite intense medical treatment (mean age 27.8 ± 14.1 years). All patients suffered from lagophthalmos. Two of the patients had only lower lid ectropion. In two of the patients' ectropion was forming on the upper lid in addition to the lower lid when closing the eye. In three of four patients, ectropion was repaired by skin grafts from the supraclavicular r…

Superficial Epidermolytic Ichthyosis-Hypertrichosis as a Clue to Diagnosis.

Superficial epidermolytic ichthyosis (SEI) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the keratin 2 gene and clinically characterized by mild hyperkeratosis, superficial blisters and shedding, referred to as the moulting phenomenon. We report a case of SEI in an 18-month-old girl presenting with marked hypertrichosis. Although not invariably present, we believe that hypertrichosis can be an important clue for diagnosis.
