[Evaluating vision after photorefractive keratectomy within the scope of legal police service requirement 300].

BACKGROUND: The Polizeidienstvorschrift (PDV) 300 is a regulation which prescribes visual requirements for applicants to the German Police Service. Among other demands, uncorrected visual acuity (VA) of both eyes must be at least 0.5 before age 18 and at least 0.3 after age 21. The spherical equivalent of spectacle correction is ordained to fall into the range between -2.0 and +3.0 dpt. To date, recommendations for the assessment of excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with a view to Police Service applicants are still lacking. PATIENTS: Two applicants with myopic astigmatism were

Persistent epithelial defect following photorefractive keratectomy: A case presentation and review of contributing factors.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a commonly performed refractive surgery that has pain as one of the most encountered adverse effects postoperatively. Hence, topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed post-PRK. While there is conflicting evidence on their impact on delayed epithelialization, this is not a concern if the epithelium heals promptly with standard treatment. However, persistent epithelial defect (PED) is a serious problem that can lead to devastating complications. Here, we report on a patient with Vitamin D deficiency who underwent uneventful

High ablation depth phototherapeutic keratectomy in an advanced case of Reis-Bucklers' corneal dystrophy.

PURPOSE: Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) plays an important role in the management of Reis-Bucklers' corneal dystrophy. The usage of PTK for the treatment of anterior corneal dystrophies is limited by the depth of ablation. This case shows the usage of high ablation depth PTK as one of the management strategies to visually rehabilitate a patient of advanced Reis-Bucklers' corneal dystrophy. OBSERVATIONS: We present a case of 32-year-old lady who was diagnosed with Reis-Bucklers' dystrophy in both eyes. The patient had advanced form of the disease and history of recurrent corneal erosions.

Photorefractive keratectomy in mild to moderate keratoconus: outcomes in over 40-year-old patients.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus is a contraindication for photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). In the recent decade, some efforts have been made to perform PRK in patients with keratoconus whose corneas are stable naturally or by doing corneal collagen crosslinking. These studies have suggested residual central corneal thickness (CCT) ≥450 μm. AIMS: The aim was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of PRK in patients with mild to moderate keratoconus in patients older than 40 with residual CCT ≥ 400 μm. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This prospective study was conducted in our Cornea Research Center, Mashhad, Iran
