Outcomes of 576 patients with extracorporeal life support for the treatment of perioperative cardiogenic shock.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyse the short- and long-term outcomes in patients who received extracorporeal life support for the treatment of perioperative low-output syndrome and identify risk factors for mortality. METHODS: All consecutive patients who received extracorporeal life-support system during or after cardiac surgery at a high-volume German cardiac centre between 2008 and 2017 were identified retrospectively and followed up to December 2023. This cohort was characterized, and long-term survival (>10 years) was analysed. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were pe

Intermediate-term outcomes after paediatric cardiac extracorporeal membrane oxygenation--what is known (and unknown).

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in infants and children with cardiac disease who develop refractory cardiogenic shock, cyanosis, or cardiac arrest is increasing. Early mortality in children with cardiac disease who require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation remains an important issue, as only 40% of cannulated patients survive to discharge from the hospital. However, it is encouraging that 90% children who are discharged alive from the hospital after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are still alive at intermediate-term follow-up. Surviving patients are at risk for long-term

Depressive disorder associated with physical illness. The impact of stroke.

The consultation-liaison psychiatrist is confronted time after time with depression in the context of physical illness, and the link between the two is of practical and theoretical interest. In addressing this topic, current classification systems are ambiguous. The advent of research diagnostic criteria and the primary/secondary depression dichotomy have not clarified the problem as was hoped. The conventional view that physical illness only precipitates depression in the genetically predisposed has been challenged by recent studies in patients with stroke. These studies point to a specific r

Leveraging National Health Survey Data for Life-Course Analysis: Socioeconomic Positioning and Adult Obesity in South Korea Using KNHANES.

This study examines how nationally representative health survey data can be used to operationalise a life-course approach to health inequalities by examining socioeconomic inequalities and adult obesity in South Korea. Drawing on the life-course framework and using data from the ninth wave of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2022-2024), the study explores how multiple indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) are associated with obesity among adults aged 19 years and older (n=12,075). South Korea provides a valuable context for life-course research as a high-

Professional quality of life of hospital nurses: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health care systems are struggling to meet the growing demands for nursing care due to a shrinking workforce. The interplay between workforce shortages, professional quality of life, and insufficient support structures threatens not only nurses' well-being but also the quality of care. Addressing these factors is crucial to ensure the resilience of the nursing workforce and the quality of patient care. OBJECTIVE: To examine the levels of the three dimensions of Professional Quality of Life (ProQoL): compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) am

Automated Insulin Delivery for Pregnancy With Type 1 Diabetes: A Call to Action.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) requires intensive glycemic management in pregnancy with insulin to achieve pregnancy-specific glycemic targets and avoid serious maternal and perinatal morbidity. Glycemic targets for pregnancy, which are lower than those outside pregnancy, are extremely challenging to achieve, resulting in considerable burden and psychosocial distress for pregnant women living with T1D. While automated insulin delivery (AID) is now the recommended mode of insulin delivery for T1D, pregnant women with T1D have been left behind. AID systems approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administratio

Advancing health-care access to optimise health and quality of life for children and young people with Down syndrome worldwide.

This Series paper describes the health inequities faced by children and young people with Down syndrome, and how health systems can be strengthened to meet these needs. Meta-analyses have shown that children and young people with Down syndrome face frequent health challenges, including, but not exclusively, increased rates of respiratory infections and poorer cancer outcomes. Important evidence gaps remain in the health needs and trajectories for children and young people with Down syndrome, despite this period of early life being a crucial period for intervention and development. Inclusive an

"A Minefield for the Novice": Australian Women's Experiences Seeking Health Information Online About Perimenopause.

During perimenopause, many women experience psychological and physiological symptoms that can seriously impact quality of life and future health. However, they report challenges accessing appropriate information and medical support, likely exacerbated by clinician knowledge gaps, stigma, and a persistent lack of research, consistent with a documented pattern of structural sexism in health systems. Consequently, women increasingly turn to alternative sources, particularly online, for support. Although scholarship exists on online health-information seeking and women's digital health engagement,

Perfusion Pressure and the Histology of Brain Death: A Unique Case in an Infant Maintained on Life Support.

Brain death is a not uncommon phenomena in the adult and pediatric population. Most cases are removed from life support soon after brain death is declared. Less commonly, systemic perfusion is maintained by life support for some time after neurologic function stops. These cases present uncommon opportunities to explore the histology of necrosis and autolysis in the context of global hypoxic ischemic damage. Here, we describe the unusual case of an infant maintained on life support for 2 weeks after brain death was declared with an emphasis on the resulting gross and histologic findings includi

The impact of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome on caregivers: assessing quality of life and burden.

BACKGROUND: Raising a child with 22q11.2DS presents significant psychosocial and financial challenges for caregivers for various reasons. Research on the quality of life (QoL) of caregivers for patients with rare diseases highlights significant challenges, with caregivers reporting lower health-related QoL compared to the general population. Long-term care impacts social, health, and economic aspects of life, with the burden on caregivers inversely correlating with their QoL, affecting mobility and daily activities. Parents often manage their child's complex medical care, underscoring the need

Effects of family and domestic violence on adolescents' health-related quality of life in China: Roles of health-risk behaviors and social supports.

Family and domestic violence (FDV) has profound effects on adolescents, acting as a key predictor of poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, research on its comprehensive health impacts remains sparse. The study aims to examine the mediating role of health-risk behaviors (HRB) and the moderating role of social support in the relationship between FDV and HRQoL. Data were drawn from the 2022 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents, involving 4003 adolescents aged 12-19 years in China. Structural Equation Models were employed to investigate the relationship betw

Invited review: Herd-level udder health indices derived from repeated individual somatic cell count measurements.

Subclinical mastitis persists as a challenge in dairy production, contributing to significant economic losses, compromising animal health and welfare, and driving antimicrobial use. It adversely affects milk quality, farm productivity, and overall profitability. This narrative review synthesizes historical literature, knowledge, and tools for herd-level udder health monitoring, with a focus on indices derived from repeated individual cow SCC measurements. Grounded in epidemiological principles, this review is structured around the life cycle of dairy cattle, using SCC data collected through ro

Non-Viral Delivery System and Targeted Bone Disease Therapy.

Skeletal systems provide support, movement, and protection to the human body. It can be affected by several life suffering bone disorders such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and bone cancers. It is not an easy job to treat bone disorders because of avascular cartilage regions. Treatment with non-specific drug delivery must utilize high doses of systemic administration, which may result in toxicities in non-skeletal tissues and low therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, in order to overcome such limitations, developments in targeted delivery systems are urgently needed. Although the idea of a gener

A life-threatening presentation of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

: Necrotizing eosinophilic myocarditis (NEM) is a life-threatening condition that needs rapid diagnosis by endomyocardial biopsy and hemodynamic support usually by mechanical circulatory systems. We present the case of a 25-year-old Caucasian man who developed a refractory cardiogenic shock due to a NEM that was supported with a peripheral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation associated with intravenous steroids and recovered after 2 weeks. Further instrumental investigations lead to the final diagnosis of NEM as first presentation of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis
