Uterine lithiasis triggered by an intrauterine contraceptive device: A case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine lithiasis is an extremely rare condition. Although bladder stone formation associated with intrauterine devices (IUDs) has occasionally been described, no previous cases of uterine calculus have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 78-year-old Japanese woman who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and abdominal distention. Imaging revealed calcifications extending from the cervix to the bladder, indicating a vesicouterine fistula. A uterine calculus containing a Y-shaped IUD and a bladder stone was identified. The patient underwent an a…

Surgical Treatment of Lithiasis of the Main Pancreatic Duct: A Challenging Case and a Literature Review.

Pancreaticolithiasis represents a rare phenomenon, being superimposed most of the time on a form of chronic pancreatitis of multifactorial etiology. Pancreaticolithiasis is a late complication of the phenomenon of chronic pancreatitis. The reverberant inflammatory process, followed by the fibrotic degeneration of the pancreatic parenchyma, and pancreatic fluid stasis at the ductal level are factors that contribute to the phenomenon of calcium precipitation. This article describes the case of a patient with a diagnosis of pancreaticolithiasis (Wirsung duct lithiasis), a phenomenon superimposed …

The antioxidant l-Ergothioneine prevents cystine lithiasis in the Slc7a9-/- mouse model of cystinuria.

The high recurrence rate of cystine lithiasis observed in cystinuria patients highlights the need for new therapeutic options to address this chronic disease. There is growing evidence of an antioxidant defect in cystinuria, which has led to test antioxidant molecules as new therapeutic approaches. In this study, the antioxidant l-Ergothioneine was evaluated, at two different doses, as a preventive and long-term treatment for cystinuria in the Slc7a9-/- mouse model. l-Ergothioneine treatments decreased the rate of stone formation by more than 60% and delayed its onset in those mice that still …

Surgery in biliary lithiasis: from the traditional "open" approach to laparoscopy and the "rendezvous" technique.

BACKGROUND: According to the current literature, biliary lithiasis is a worldwide-diffused condition that affects almost 20% of the general population. The rate of common bile duct stones (CBDS) in patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis is estimated to be 10% to 33%, depending on patient's age. Compared to stones in the gallbladder, the natural history of secondary CBDS is still not completely understood. It is not clear whether an asymptomatic choledocholithiasis requires treatment or not. For many years, open cholecystectomy with choledochotomy and/or surgical sphincterotomy and cleaning o…

[Primary intestinal-type adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis associated with lithiasis: a case report].

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis occurring in a 57-year-old woman who had no previous history is reported. The lesions were thought to be a renal destruction by pyelolithiasis upon symptomatology and imaging study data. A nephrectomy was thus performed. Macroscopic examination revealed voluminous and exophytic lesions surrounding lithiasis. Diagnosis of intestinal-type adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis was established on histological examination. No evidence of other tumor localization was revealed by complete exploration. Primary adenocarcinoma of renal pelvis is a rare a…

Evolution of post-ESWL residual lithiasis depending on the type of calculus and urine composition.

OBJECTIVES: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is one of the most commonly used procedures for removal of renal calculi from the upper urinary tract, but complete expulsion of the fragments generated is not always achieved. This can lead to new lithiasic episodes, and it is considered that 10-26% of fragmented calculi can undergo regrowth. This in vitro study investigated the influence of fragment and urinary composition on post-ESWL growth of fragments, with the aims of establishing the effect and importance of these parameters, and identifying effective prophylactic measures. [Xanthinuria with xanthine lithiasis in a patient with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome under allopurinol therapy].

PURPOSE: It is the intention of this report to identify appropriate analytical tests which allow for the monitoring of allopurinol treatment of patients with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and the prevention of uric acid or xanthine lithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 12 year old boy with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome presented with signs of compulsive automutilation, motoric and mental retardation and cerebral palsy. Paraclinical patient showed hyperuricemia and significant hyperuricosuria. During administration of allopurinol (200 mg/d) he developed fever, an urinary tract infection and dilatation of pelviure…

[Primary vaginal lithiasis associated with urethrovaginal fistula. Report of a case and review of the literature].

Vaginal stones are rare. We can classify them as primary or secondary, depending on the presence or the absencse of a foreign body nidus. Various cases can led to stone formation. Most of them developed in women with a vesicovaginal or urethrovaginal fistula, as well as in patients with congenital anomalies of the genitourinary tract, previous pelvic radiotherapy, neuropathic bladder and other different causes of vaginal outlet obstruction. Secondary vaginal stones, formed around foreign bodies, are not so frequent. Radiological examination and urethro-vaginoscopy make easy the right diagnosis

[Asymptomatic lithiasis of the common bile duct: diagnostic difficulty and essentiality of intraoperative cholangiography].

Biliary lithiasis is a widespread pathology the diagnosis of which, following the introduction of ultrasonography, is increasingly easy. The frequent possibility of association between gallstones and choledocholithiasis, demands pre- or intraoperative recognition. The inadequacy of ultrasonography in excluding lithiasis of the common biliary tract with certainty, notwithstanding its other unquestionable advantages, and the disproportionate costs and risks of other investigations (cholangiography, ERCP, ecc.) which are such as to discourage routine use, confirm the role of operative cholangiogr…

[Hydatid cyst of the kidney rupturing in the kidney pelvis and associated with lithiasis. Apropos of a case].

The authors report one case of renal hydatid disease, with lithiasis and rupture into the renal pelvis. Pre-operative diagnostic investigation included ultrasound and CT scan imaging. Serologic test was negative. Treatment was surgical: removal of the hydatid and resection of the protruding part of the cyst. The fistula is closed with a drainage into the pelvis.

Management of the choked ureter in obstructive renal failure due to uric acid lithiasis.

We report on 8 azotemic patients with anuria or progressive oliguria owing to bilateral uric acid lithiasis. In 7 patients the precipitating cause of acute obstructive renal insufficiency was choking of at least 1 distal ureter with numerous small uric acid stones. In 6 of these ureters contrast retrograde ureterography showed relief of obstruction, which was believed to be owing to the stone dissolution properties of the contrast medium used. In situ alkalization via nephrostomy catheters achieved dissolution of obstructing stones in 3 tracts and systemic alkalization dissolved the stones in …

Age-Associated Differences in Ductal Involvement in Biliary Lithiasis: A Consecutive MRCP Cohort Study.

Background: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) enables non-invasive assessment of biliary lithiasis, duct caliber, and associated anatomical findings. Although age-dependent reference limits for common bile duct (CBD) diameter have been described, the relationships among age, gallbladder stone morphology, ductal anatomy, and CBD stones remain incompletely characterized in consecutive radiology cohorts. This study assessed age-associated MRCP patterns and imaging features associated with CBD stones. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 242 consecutive MRCP examinations performed…

Pediatric Hepatobiliary Lithiasis in Homozygous Sickle Cell Disease: Laboratory Insights Into Cholestasis and Hemolysis.

Chronic hemolysis in sickle cell disease (SCD) predisposes patients to hepatobiliary complications, including pigment gallstones. We report a 13-year-old girl with hemoglobin SS SCD who presented with right upper quadrant pain, progressive jaundice, and fever. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe anemia with reticulocytosis, mixed hyperbilirubinemia, elevated lactate dehydrogenase, normal cholestatic enzymes, and marked C-reactive protein elevation. Imaging confirmed microlithiasis without significant bile duct obstruction. Supportive care included transfusion, hydration, antibiotics, and pai…
