Developmental deformities of the permanent dentition are of primary concern in the treatment of patients suffering from cleidocranial dysostosis. The therapeutic approach should be based on interdisciplinary cooperation between orthodontists as well as oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Therapy may include surgical exposure of impacted teeth in combination with removal of supernumerary teeth. Already during the surgical procedure orthodontic bands and brackets may be attached. The next step in treatment should consist of orthodontic alignment of the teeth and correction of the jaw relations. In

Nasal septal deviation (NSD) is one of the most common abnormalities impacting the maxillofacial development of children. Herein, we investigated the impact of orthopedic rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on the nasomaxillary complex and NSD in pediatric patients. The study sample consisted of a total of 40 patients divided into two groups. The experimental group included 26 patients (13 females and 13 males) with skeletal maxillary transversal constriction and NSD greater than 1 mm, while the control group comprised 14 patients (6 females and 8 males) with skeletal maxillary transversal constri

Tooth developmental anomalies are a group of disorders caused by unfavorable factors affecting the tooth development process, resulting in abnormalities in tooth number, structure, and morphology. These anomalies typically manifest during childhood, impairing dental function, maxillofacial development, and facial aesthetics, while also potentially impacting overall physical and mental health. The complex etiology and diverse clinical phenotypes of these anomalies pose significant challenges for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. As they usually emerge early in life, long-term manageme

The treatment of newborns with craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip and/or palate poses special challenges for healthcare providers. Often, the collaboration of an interdisciplinary team of pediatricians, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons is necessary. Therapy using feeding or stimulation plates can improve feeding and strengthen orofacial muscle tone. The treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate using conventionally manufactured feeding plates as well as the treatment of patients with reduced orofacial muscle tone through stimulation plates therapy are establis

UNLABELLED: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in children with Down syndrome, with reported prevalence rates as high as 69-76%. Multiple factors predispose children with Down syndrome for OSA, including craniofacial hypoplasia (maxillary and mandibular), airway abnormalities, macroglossia, generalized hypotonia, airway hypotonia, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, and obesity. Despite the fact that the pathophysiology for OSA in children with Down syndrome is multifactorial in nature, treatment methods have focused on soft tissue in the upper airway using adenotonsillectomy and/or continuous po

LEOPARD syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly that involves several organs. Patients with this syndrome develop multiple lentigines resembling a leopard's hide. LEOPARD is an acronym of the major features constituting the syndrome including lentigines, electrocardiographic conduction defects, ocular hypertelorism, pulmonary valve stenosis, anomalies of genitalia, retardation of growth, and deafness. The syndrome is rare, and only 200 cases have been reported yet worldwide. We present the case of an 8-year-old female patient who visited the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermato-Venereology becau

Orofacial changes are frequent in acromegaly. Their evolution is slowly progressive. The lips (everted and thickened), the mandibular morphology (prognathism), the tongue (macroglossia), the soft palate and the uvula (increased and thickened), the parodontis (gingival hyperplasia, paradontitis), the teeth (increased interdental spaces, hypercementosis, increased dental mobility, multiple tooth loss) are concerned. Functional consequences are significant (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, malocclusion, pain of the oral maxillofacial area, decrease of the quality of life). They are rarely notice

Orthodontic and orthognathic surgical procedures are important adjuncts to the provision of optimum restorative and periodontal care. Dentoalveolar and skeletal abnormalities of either developmental or acquired origin can be corrected primarily, thus eliminating the necessity for compromise in prosthetic design. Dental relationships that are contributory to irreversible periodontal deterioration can be normalized to facilitate stabilization of the periodontal condition and to increase the longevity of the natural dentition. Maxillofacial surgical treatment is technically complex but is more co

Mandibular advancement devices (MAD) should be contraindicated (Clark GT, Sleep Med Rev 1998;2:163-174) if there are: (1) insufficient teeth to support the device, (2) periodontal problems inducing tooth mobility, (3) active temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, and (4) limited maximum protrusive distance (< 6 mm). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the proportion of the obstructive sleep apnea population that exhibits any contraindication (CI) to MAD. For this study there were 100 unselected adult patients consecutively diagnosed by polysomnography in a tertiary sleep laboratory.

A 27-year-old man from Ethiopia had undergone an extraction of a molar in Libya ten months earlier, after which a submental swelling developed. For that reason, an oral and maxillofacial surgery department was consulted. Clinical examination showed a tender, firm-to-the-touch, non-mobile swelling with central ulceration. There was no pus drainage or evident lymphadenopathy. Intraoral examination showed a sanitized dentition with a healed diastema in the area of the extracted tooth. The patient suffered from fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, fever, headache and a cough. A recent chest X-ray,

Many patients with mental retardation have a limited awareness of abnormalities in the oral cavity, making early detection of oral cancer difficult. Moreover, during examination and treatment, these patients may not understand well-intentioned verbal explanations and may express their anxiety through nonverbal communication. Herein we discuss a case in which favorable results were obtained when surgical treatment was performed on a maxillary gingival carcinoma patient with mental retardation. The patient was a 61-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with maxillary gingival pain. A bio

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a heterogeneous group of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions involving the temporomandibular joint complex, and surrounding musculature and osseous components. TMD affects up to 15% of adults, with a peak incidence at 20 to 40 years of age. TMD is classified as intra-articular or extra-articular. Common symptoms include jaw pain or dysfunction, earache, headache, and facial pain. The etiology of TMD is multifactorial and includes biologic, environmental, social, emotional, and cognitive triggers. Diagnosis is most often based on history and physic

Rare craniofacial clefts have an incidence of at least 1 per 100,000 live births. A Tessier number 4 cleft is one of the most rare craniofacial clefts, with less than 50 cases being reported in the literature. Both soft and bony tissue abnormalities take place in the cleft morphology, so not only clinical examination of the maxillofacial region but a detailed radiological workup is needed to assess clearly the nature of the clefts. A patient with a Tessier number 4 cleft is presented, whose bony defect was obliterated with autogenous iliac bone graft chips and soft tissue reconstruction was pe
