Distance from human dwellings differentially affects the efficacy of a synthetic cattle urine odour lure to trap malaria vectors.

BACKGROUND: Cost-effective outdoor-based devices for surveillance and control of outdoor mosquito vector populations can substantially improve their efficacy when baited with synthetic human and animal odours. This study aimed at assessing the dose-dependent efficacy of a previously developed synthetic cattle urine odour to lure malaria vectors, and other mosquito species, to traps placed at different distances from human dwellings outdoors. METHODS: The efficacy of the cattle urine odour lure was assessed through a 5 × 5 Latin square design, using two sets of 5 Suna traps placed at either 1.

Enhancing Malaria Research, Surveillance, and Control in Endemic Areas of Kenya and Ethiopia.

Malaria control programs in Africa encounter daunting challenges that hinder progressive steps toward elimination of the disease. These challenges include widespread insecticide resistance in mosquito vectors, increasing outdoor malaria transmission, lack of vector surveillance and control tools suitable for outdoor biting vectors, weakness in malaria surveillance, and an inadequate number of skilled healthcare personnel. Ecological and epidemiological changes induced by environmental modifications resulting from water resource development projects pose additional barriers to malaria control.

Malaria vector bionomics and transmission in irrigated and non-irrigated sites in western Kenya.

Irrigation not only helps to improve food security but also creates numerous water bodies for mosquito production. This study assessed the effect of irrigation on malaria vector bionomics and transmission in a semi-arid site with ongoing malaria vector control program. The effectiveness of CDC light traps in the surveillance of malaria vectors was also evaluated relative to the human landing catches (HLCs) method. Adult mosquitoes were sampled in two study sites representing irrigated and non-irrigated agroecosystems in western Kenya using a variety of trapping methods. The mosquito samples we

Evaluation of Mosquito Magnet and other collection tools for Anopheles mosquito vectors of simian malaria.

BACKGROUND: Vector surveillance is essential in determining the geographical distribution of mosquito vectors and understanding the dynamics of malaria transmission. With the elimination of human malaria cases, knowlesi malaria cases in humans are increasing in Malaysia. This necessitates intensive vector studies using safer trapping methods which are both field efficient and able to attract the local vector populations. Thus, this study evaluated the potential of Mosquito Magnet as a collection tool for Anopheles mosquito vectors of simian malaria along with other known collection methods. M

Implementation of bamboo and monkey-pot traps for the sampling cavity-breeding mosquitoes in Darién, Panama.

Despite the importance of Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes in the transmission of yellow fever virus (YFV) and the public health impacts of recent YFV epidemics in the Americas, relatively little has been reported on the biology and ecology of these vectors. Many Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes spp. in the American tropics inhabit and develop in the forest canopy and are difficult to sample with conventional entomological surveillance methods. We tested the utility of two previously developed phytotelmata-style oviposition traps (bamboo Guadua angustifolia) and (monkey-pot Lecythis minor), for co

Efficiency of CO2 -baited CDC miniature light traps under semi-field conditions and characterizing response behaviors of female Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is an important vector of viruses causing dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever and as such is a threat to public health worldwide. Effective trapping methods are essential for surveillance of both mosquito species and disease presence. The Centers for Disease Control Miniature Light Trap (CDC-MLT) is an updated version of the New Jersey light trap, which was developed early in the 20th century. This trap is widely reported as being less successful for Ae. aegypti than for other mosquito species, although the reason for this is unclear. This trap h

A Novel Methodology For Recording Wing Beat Frequencies of Untethered Male and Female Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti is a vector of many significant arboviruses worldwide, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses. With vector control methodology pivoting toward rearing and releasing large numbers of insects for either population suppression or virus-blocking, economical remote (sentinel) surveillance methods for release tracking become increasingly necessary. Recent steps in this direction include advances in optical sensors that identify and classify insects based on their wing beat frequency (WBF). As these traps are being developed, there is a strong need to better under

Efficacy of Spatial Repellents in Malaria Prevention: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

The efficacy of spatial repellents in preventing malaria infections is unclear. In the present study, a meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials conducted in China, Indonesia, and Kenya, involving 6,745 participants, was conducted to assess the efficacy of spatial repellents in reducing malaria infections. The risk of malaria infection was lower with the use of spatial repellents (681 [20.0%] of 3,399 participants) compared with controls (1,055 [31.0%] of 3,346 participants), resulting in a 52% risk reduction (pooled risk ratio: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.33 to 0.70; P <0.001). Integrated vector and parasite management for malaria control in high-endemic areas: pummel and pin strategy to prevent malaria setbacks.

Rebounding to a higher malaria endemicity level or remaining at the same level despite implementation of malaria control interventions has been reported in high-endemic areas of many sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries. Based on current trends, the 2030 targets of the World Health Organization, which aim for at least a 90% reduction in malaria mortality and morbidity, are out of reach. Moreover, the experiences of many countries in SSA show that the implementation of various packages of malaria control interventions in areas of low to moderate transmission can achieve a significant reduction in

Community-Based Control of Malaria Vectors Using Bacillus thuringiensis var. Israelensis (Bti) in Rwanda.

Larval source management (LSM) programs for control of malaria vectors are often vertically organized, while there is much potential for involving local communities in program implementation. To address this, we evaluated the entomological impact of community-based application of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) in a rice irrigation scheme in Ruhuha, Rwanda. A non-randomized trial with control compared a Bti implementation program that was supervised by the project team (ES) with a program that was led and carried out by local rice farming communities (CB). One other area served a

Evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger as potential bioinsecticides against the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, dengue disease incidence has significantly increased worldwide, creating serious public health concerns. The principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, exhibits resistance to commonly used insecticides, reducing the efficacy of vector control measures. Thus, the necessity for alternate strategies is critical. Using bioinsecticides such as entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is one such strategy. This study details the evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger against pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptib

Chromobacterium biopesticide overcomes insecticide resistance in malaria vector mosquitoes.

Vector mosquito control is an integral part of malaria control. The global emergence of insecticide resistance in malaria-transmitting Anophelines has become an impediment and has created an urgent need for novel mosquito control approaches. Here, we show that a biopesticide derived from the soil-dwelling bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (Csp_P) kills insecticide-resistant Anopheles mosquitoes, regardless of their resistance mechanisms. In addition, sublethal dose of Csp_P acts as a synergist to now used chemical insecticides across multiple classes. Moreover, Csp_P reduces host-seeking be…

Exploiting venom toxins in paratransgenesis to prevent mosquito-borne disease.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of numerous pathogens, including Plasmodium parasites, arboviruses and filarial worms. They pose a significant risk to public health with over 200 million cases of malaria per annum and approximately 4 billion people at risk of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Mosquito populations are geographically expanding into temperate regions and their distribution is predicted to continue increasing. Mosquito symbionts, including fungi, bacteria and viruses, have desirable traits for mosquito disease control including spreading horizontally and verti

Determination of the preliminary discriminating concentration of broflanilide against malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae by multi-centre susceptibility testing.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticides is widely used as an effective method to control malaria vector mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2023, a new IRS product, VECTRON™ T500 (Mitsui Chemicals Crop & Life Solutions, Inc.), was launched. This product contains broflanilide, a novel active ingredient for IRS, and has been confirmed to exhibit long-lasting insecticidal efficacy against malaria vector mosquitoes. However, the discriminating concentration to assess the susceptibility of wild Anopheles populations to broflanilide has not yet been determined. METHODS: In this

Determination of the residual efficacy of broflanilide (VECTRON™ T500) insecticide for indoor residual spraying in a semi-field setting in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The rotational use of insecticides with diverse modes of action in indoor residual spraying (IRS) is pivotal for enhancing malaria vector control and addressing insecticide resistance. A key factor in national malaria vector control/elimination programmes is the rate at which these insecticides decay. VECTRON™ T500, with broflanilide as its active ingredient, is a recently developed candidate insecticide formulation which has shown promising results in certain phase II experimental hut trials. However, its residual efficacy across different settings has not been thoroughly investig

Is Gene Drive Research Losing Traction?

Significant progress has been made in developing gene drives, especially for mosquito vectors of malaria. It is widely agreed that a critical next step in advancing this technology is to evaluate it through small-scale field trials. However, obtaining permission to move forward with these trials has stalled, threatening this potentially transformative line of research. In this paper, roadblocks delaying progress are identified from the perspective of a developer group tasked with translating this technology to the field. We suggest that groups engaged in long-running discussions about risk and

Repellent effects of insecticides against Aedes aegypti: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses, including dengue, Zika and chikungunya, representing a major global public health concern. Owing to the lack of effective vaccines and specific therapeutic options for these infections, vector control remains the main strategy to limit their spread. Traditionally, vector control has relied on extensive use of insecticides combined with the elimination of breeding sites. However, in addition to selecting for insecticide-resistant mosquitoes, concerns have arisen about behavioural effects induced by insecticides, particularly repell

Analysis of fractional-order model for the transmission dynamics of malaria via Caputo-Fabrizio and Atangana-Baleanu operators.

Malaria continues to pose a significant global health challenge, with its persistent transmission creating major difficulties for healthcare systems worldwide. Tackling this problem calls for innovative and effective methods to enhance understanding and control of the disease. In this work, we proposed a fractional-order mathematical model to study the dynamics of malaria transmission, integrating essential control measures such as treatment of humans and management of mosquito populations. The model employed three different types of non-integer order differential operators: the Caputo operato
