Attachment, Personality Disorders and Depression in Adolescence Depressive disorders are particularly common in child and adolescent psychiatric settings. There are high comorbidity rates, however, research on comorbid personality disorders in adolescent age groups remains limited. Attachment-related dynamics play a significant role in the development of both depression and personality disorders and they represent important indicators of therapeutic outcomes. The present study shows our latest findings on attachment patterns and personality pathology in an adolescent inpatient psychiatric samp

The convergent and discriminant validity of the Chapman Scales.

Our study investigated the convergent and discriminant validity of five of Chapman's Schizotypia Scales (i.e., Physical Anhedonia, Revised Social Anhedonia, Perceptual Aberration, Magical Ideation, and Impulsive Nonconformity; L.J. Chapman, J.P. Chapman, & Raulin 1976, 1978; Eckblad & L.J. Chapman, 1983) and Meehl's Schizoidia Scale (Meehl, 1964) within a sample of 50 personality disordered subjects, many of whom possessed schizotypic traits. It was hypothesized in part that all five of the Chapman scales and the Schizoidia Scale would correlate with the schizotypal personality disorder; the P

Factors predicting psychiatric co-morbidity in gender-dysphoric adults.

Persons with gender identity disorder (GID) often suffer from psychiatric co-morbidity, and it is an important prognostic factor for long-term psychosocial adjustment in GID. However, previous research has not addressed the risk factors of psychiatric co-morbidity. In this study, we tried to clarify the risk factors among individuals with GID in Japan. A total of 326 consecutive GID persons were evaluated independently by two senior psychiatrists at the GID clinic using personal clinical interviews and results of examinations. The prevalence of current psychiatric co-morbidity was 17.8% of the

Comorbidity Patterns in Alcohol Use Disorder: A Short-Term Residential Program Pilot Study.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) often coexists with psychiatric disorders, complicating treatment and outcome. This pilot study highlights the psychiatric disorders that co-exist with AUD in 403 consecutive admissions to a short-term residential program of the Psychiatric Hospital of Attica, Greece. Clinical and demographic data for these patients were systematically recorded and analyzed. Subsequently, patients diagnosed with at least one other psychiatric disorder were identified and categorized. Notably, approximately 87% of the patients were diagnosed with at least one comorbid psychiatric diso

Breast Cancer and Its Impact on Individual Personality Through a Dimensional Perspective: A Literature Review.

Psychiatric pathology stands out in contemporary society not only as independent but also through its association with other medical comorbidities such as neoplastic diseases. Specialized literature confirms over time the coexistence of these diseases. There is a tendency to develop various psychiatric manifestations such as mood disorders and somatoform disorders, as well as decompensation of underlying existing psychiatric pathologies (anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders) or personality disorders (a good example is the exacerbation of anxiety in obsessive-compulsive personality disorde

Evidence for the existence of major depression with and without anxiety features.

Several studies have reported on comorbidity between depression and anxiety. The present study investigates the occurrence of anxiety symptoms during an episode of unipolar depression. The authors administered the 15-item Rating Scale for Anxiety States of Hamilton (HAM-A) to 73 depressed inpatients categorized according to DSM-III criteria into minor (300.40, 309.00), major depression without (296.X2) and with (296.X3) melancholia. Principal-component (PC) analysis revealed three interpretable PCs: a somatic anxiety, a depression-anxiety overlap, and an anxious mood-behavior factor. Subjects

Psychiatric comorbidity in different organic vertigo syndromes.

OBJECTIVE: A high degree of psychiatric disorders has repeatedly been described among patients with organic vertigo syndromes and attributed to vestibular dysfunction. Yet almost no investigations exist which differentiate between various organic vertigo syndromes with regard to psychiatric comorbidity. The following prospective, interdisciplinary study was carried out to explore whether patients with different organic vertigo syndromes exhibit different psychological comorbidities. METHODS: 68 patients with organic vertigo syndromes (benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV) n = 20, vesti

Amitriptyline versus haloperidol in borderlines: final outcomes and predictors of response.

The authors report the final results of a 4-year study of amitriptyline and haloperidol in 90 symptomatic borderline inpatients. Medication trials were double-blind and placebo controlled and lasted 5 weeks. Haloperidol (4-16 mg/day) produced significant improvement over placebo in global functioning, depression, hostility, schizotypal symptoms, and impulsive behavior. Significant effects of amitriptyline (100-175 mg/day) were generally limited to measures of depression. Factor analysis identified three symptom change patterns: a global depression, hostile depression, and schizotypal symptom p

Dependent personality disorder associated with phobic avoidance in patients with panic disorder.

Eighty-eight panic disorder patients were divided into three groups according to the extent of their phobic avoidance (none, limited, or extensive). These groups were compared on three personality disorder instruments: the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. Phobic patients were found to have significantly more dependent personality disorder and DSM-III third-cluster personality disorders than nonphobic patients. A subgroup of patients with social phobic symptoms was found to resemble th

Clinical Manifestations and Management of Conversion Disorders.

Conversion disorder, the acute onset of sensory or motor loss unexplained by physical findings, has long been reported in the neurologic and psychiatric literature. It was once thought to be largely covariate with the "hysterical" (now referred to as "histrionic") personality, but recent work finds that conversion disorder more often presents in the absence of this personality disorder. Conversion disorder may also be part of a chronic pattern of physical expression of psychologic distress known as somatization disorder. Other psychiatric illnesses (particularly mood and anxiety disorders) are

Child Maltreatment and Psychiatric Disorders Increase Risk for Stalking Victimization.

Stalking is a serious public health problem, estimated to affect about 15% of women and 6% of men. Victims of stalking have been reported to be at increased risk for psychological distress, depression, lowered social and daily functioning, and other forms of victimization. The present study sought to determine whether individuals with documented histories of childhood maltreatment and those with psychiatric disorders are at increased risk for stalking victimization. Participants included maltreated children and matched controls (N = 892) from a Midwestern, metropolitan area who were followed u

Emerging psychiatric disorders in Kleine-Levin syndrome.

In Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), episodes of hypersomnia and cognitive, psychiatric and behavioural disturbances alternate with asymptomatic periods in adolescents. We evaluated whether psychiatric disorders would emerge during asymptomatic periods in a naturalistic, uncontrolled clinical cohort. Patients with primary KLS underwent psychiatric interviews at diagnosis and every year for 1-10 years, leading to diagnosis of former and present comorbid psychiatric disorders. Among the 115 patients (65.2% male and aged 16.1 ± 4.8 years at KLS onset), 19 (16.5%) had a history of psychiatric disorder

Psychiatric diagnoses of treatment-seeking cocaine abusers.

In a sample of 298 cocaine abusers seeking inpatient (n = 149) or outpatient (n = 149) treatment, rates of psychiatric disorders were determined by means of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Research Diagnostic Criteria. Overall, 55.7% met current and 73.5% met lifetime criteria for a psychiatric disorder other than a substance use disorder. In common with previous reports from clinical samples of cocaine abusers, these overall rates were largely accounted for by major depression, minor bipolar conditions (eg, hypomania, cyclothymic personality), anxiety disorders, antisocial personalit

Stakeholders facilitating hope and empowerment amidst social suffering: A qualitative documentary analysis exploring lives of homeless women with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Globally homeless mentally ill (HMI) individuals are considered one of the most vulnerable populations. An individual-centric, psychopathology-oriented focus of the existing mental health-care system limits the understanding of the HMI individuals through the disability lens overlooking their strengths and resilience that enable them to survive extremely hostile environments. Contemporary mental health research has embraced a paradigm shift that allows researchers to look beyond the predominant medical model to give precedence to a socio-culturally contexted and experientially firm

Changes in Psychological Health and Subjective Well-Being Among Incarcerated Individuals With Serious Mental Illness.

While improving the psychological health and well-being of individuals with serious mental illness can help reduce emotional distress and increase resilience, not enough is known about the well-being of incarcerated individuals with mental illness. Using the Schwartz Outcome Scale-10, the authors examined changes in subjective well-being and its association with other clinical symptoms and personality features in 43 mentally ill inmates in a large jail. All participants demonstrated significant improvement in general psychopathology and negative emotions. For well-being, however, different tra

Dementia and cognitive disorder identified at a forensic psychiatric examination - a study from Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have addressed the relationship between dementia and crime. We conducted a study of persons who got a primary or secondary diagnosis of dementia or cognitive disorder in a forensic psychiatric examination. METHODS: In Sweden, annually about 500 forensic psychiatric examinations are carried out. All cases from 2008 to 2010 with the diagnoses dementia or cognitive disorder were selected from the database of the Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine. Out of 1471 cases, there were 54 cases of dementia or cognitive disorder. Case files were scrutinized and 17 cases of

The relationship between childhood trauma and borderline personality symptomatology in a consecutive sample of cardiac stress test patients.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined relationships between five types of childhood trauma and two measures of borderline personality symptomatology in a non-psychiatric clinical population in order to assess a potential association between these variables in a non-psychiatric-treatment-seeking population. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional sample and a survey approach in 250 consecutive patients presenting for cardiac stress testing, we explored self-reported histories of five types of childhood trauma (i.e. witnessing violence, physical neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse),
